Its often said that adopters rarely post about good news. So I thought I would start a good news thread and ask MN to pin it to the top.

I'll start

My son is 17 and going into his second year at college studying engineering. He passed year 1 with Merit. A fantastic journey from special school into mainstream education. He has a Saturday job in a grocers. He is good fun to be around and he has lots of friends. We have had our tough times but the future looks bright. He is a fantastic young man and I'm very proud and privileged to be his mum.

@Jellycatspyjamas great news about the school you wanted for DD. Also, it’s lovely that she is discovering a love of reading; like I say to my two girls (the eldest of whom has significant difficulties and no friends), you are never truly alone if you are in the company of a (good) book!

Your tutor sounds amazing! If ever you feel like sending them south of the border, please let me know!

Patchyman1 · 14/02/2023 10:44

Great news here today, eldest has had his secondary school place confirmed, it's the specialist part to the specialist primary he attends. He's very happy, we're very happy. EHCP has been updated to reflect this from September.
I still can't believe he's going to "big school" in September!

Jellycatspyjamas · 14/02/2023 10:56

Fantastic news, it’s such a load lifted when you have their place confirmed.

Chocapple · 14/02/2023 14:32

That's absolutely fantastic news @Patchyman1 Life is so much easier when we have a good school.

Patchyman1 · 14/02/2023 15:05

And what makes it lovely is he will go up with other kids he already goes to school with. Friends that he has already made. That's a huge thing for him

He’s becoming an independent young man - good job mum!

Toon92 · 20/04/2023 10:04

These are brilliant to read as somebody who wants to adopt in the future. Well done you superstars!

Sigma33 · 20/04/2023 22:58

Well done @Ted27 !

DD was selected to represent her school at public speaking, and came third in the Borough-wide competition. She has a stammer, and gave a speech about stammering 😀

When we did the usual dentist/opticians etc round in the holidays she was taking the lead in answering their questions - and told me that since she did so well at public speaking she feels more confident speaking in other areas of life as well!

Patchyman1 · 20/04/2023 23:05

Congratulations @Ted27 fantastic news. Does he get to be taxi driver for mum now?!

@Ted27 , wow, your young man man is definitely on a roll of amazing achievements. This is one milestone I’m happy to strike out given my DD1 is registered blind so will never be permitted to drive. I’ve been a safe, accident-free and qualified driver for 30-plus years and I’m really not enjoying it lately.

Well done to your DS.

I really want DD2 to get on and learn but she hasn't got the bandwidth right now. We've sorted a 3rd year sort of in college for her so maybe from the summer we might get her going.

Ted27 · 21/04/2023 13:33

@Sigma33
Wow that's amazing, she is doing so well.
@Patchyman1 I don't drive so I have always arranged my life around walking distance and good public transport. We are both used to walking and taking the bus. He cycles to work.
We are so close to most of the things we need or do that it's often quicker to walk than faff round finding parking etc.
So it will be interesting to see how much a car will be used.
It will of course be a great help when he moves to Worcester. And I would like a trip to the electrical recycling centre.

This board hasn't appeared for a while so I'm giving it a little nudge! My boy coped so well with all the end of term craziness and being out of routine! He made us really proud performing in his Christmas nativity in front of a huge audience and all the fun Christmas activities at school have been helping him get through the door each morning.

My 19yo is on a kind of 'gap' year getting work experience, working on mental health and still trying on an English qualification.

Since she started in August she is doing so well . Doing 2 days work experience weekly across 2 businesses, reduced meds, anxiety more under control, and generally more 'her' again. (Still a distance off being well enough for full time though.)
