Anyone in their 40s/50s plus had a health wake up call?

CuriousMama · 22/03/2023 20:32

I recently went to the GP because of a couple of health worries. She took my BP whilst there and it was really high.
I'm on HRT. I'm overweight but not massively.
So I decided to make a massive effort to change my ways. I've exercised a lot more. Done yoga. Eating smaller portions and healthier food. I eat pretty healthy anyway but have upped it. Drinking beetroot smoothies. It's good for lowering BP. Taking potassium as well as usual vitamins.
She'd prescribed bp meds but I wanted to try and lower it myself first.
Bp has gone down a lot. I feel a lot better in myself and have more energy.

Anyone else had this or decided to get healthier now they're in their 50s?

@CuriousMama no I haven't tried that. I will try it tomorrow thank you 😊

Pleased to see this thread is still going and progress is being made 😊
I have a lovely week off and have come back determined to prioritise my health. I have a stone to lose, exercise to take up and need to stop fixating about work and trying to be a good parent and wife and the same time.
i’m ordering an at home BP monitor too.

This has been in my watched threads but I hadn't taken the time to read kt

I am sorry to those of you who have had such a bad time

I had an nhs appt for a weight loss programme on Thursday but got hit by a migraine and lost the whole day on Sat
I am 45 and bmi is 29
Suspect am peri but hard to tell as have mirena coil which means I don't have regular periods
Also suffer from headaches all the time - suspect these are stress related / trying to reduce this where I can but taking a fair amount of paracetamol which I know is not good long term

I have pain in my back that won't go from a fall at Xmas

Pelvic floor is still shot though youngest dc is 9 yo
And starting a new sport I love but have pain in elbow that makes it hard

Was in amazing shape at 40, really slim and happy but have had super stressful last 5 years with lots of financial woes and as I don't drink too much or smoke the only way i dealt with this was by eating. 😔
I literally ate my way through the winter lockdown of 2021
I have a few events this year I would like to be slimmer for, but more importantly I would like to feel better
Have acupuncture appt this week and also osteo to fix back next week.
Am just going to spend next few weeks (during this nhs programme and beyond) on focusing on my health - trying to be hydrated to help headaches (though this is bad for pelvic floor(!)

Exercise is the best thing. Helps mental health too.

40’s and yes. I’ve put on 8 kilos in a year and although I was in healthy range I needed to lose weight last year. I’ve joined all the calorie counting threads, going to spin three times a week and trying to feel good about the effort I am making

That's great 👍

Just back from the GP everything ok except cholesterol is 6.5 🙈 I need to eat healthier. There's heart disease in the family.

WoofWoofBeachLife · 24/04/2023 10:30

Morning how's everyone been? I had a great week last week, the weather was kind to my bones so had a low pain week and managed so much, even cleaned the oven 🤣
I lost 2 pounds, not sterling haha so that's motivated me to keep going.
Today its cold and my pain is bad, I've had a slow walk for just over an hour with the beasts and now heading home.
The dreaded cholesterol Curious Mama 🙈 good luck with healthy eating this week.
Hope everyone else is okay 🐾

CuriousMama · 24/04/2023 11:16

Hi All

I am feeling down today as my period is SO heavy this month. I was supposed to have an ablation last month but they couldn’t do it because of my funny shaped uterus… I was hoping they were stopping as have had a 7 week gap but have been bleeding heavily for 3 days now.
Is so debilitating and am supposed to be in town for an all day work meeting tomorrow and currently and flooding my tampon and towel in around an hour.
Am praying it will subside overnight..

So they won't ever do it? Do you use a menstrual cup too? I'm so sorry you're going through this 😞

Morning@SB1971 I'm sorry you are going through that. I had an ablation approx 20 years ago, it helped so much. I was hoping it would reduce the bleeding significantly as I'd read that could happen, but nope.
What else have they offered?
I'm starting to get obsessed with UPF's as there are so many articles at the moment. When it's in your face you can't ignore it. Half my cupboard and half my fridge is a big UPF zone with bad choices in yogurts and even the soft cheese I chose, lighter option (and cheaper) is ultra processed.
I've had oats, a banana and milk from our local farm for breakfast 😆

Oh you poor thing. Women get such a rough deal. Have you also tried period pants on top of those for some little extra backup?

WoofWoofBeachLife · 25/04/2023 07:04

I had to skim past the pancakes and maple syrup, add bacon and a soft egg and I could demolish that now 🍽

It did have bacon. There's a cafe a few miles away that does pancakes maple syrup bacon and roast cherry tomatoes. Sounds wrong but works. Dh is making eggs benedict not sure if I fancy any?
I've got a microblading consultation this morning. Never had it done before. I'm sick of filling in my eyebrows.

I'll have to fit in some exercise today. I found a good YouTube video that combines walking with standing up exercises. I might do that later then some yoga? I'm still on annual leave so have time.

Don't know how I missed the bacon. Oh I love eggs benedict 😋
I've had a short walk, one of the brood ate something at the beach yesterday and has been sick in the car and on the couch, at least it wasn't my rug or carpet 🤣 stinks 🤢
I've had a soda scone with tomato I couldn't resist it 😅

Orangesandlemons77 · 25/04/2023 16:26

Nice thread, just been reading it through, empathise with all of you. Some of you have been through such a lot!

I'm 46 and keep getting Shingles, first in my back / side but recently on my face. I now have been diagnosed with Neuralgia from the Shingles, on pain meds (pregabalin)

I used to be quite fit walking DCs up massive hill to primary school but they are now at secondary and don't need that anymore.

I do have a membership to the local Sports centre so need to get back there swimming etc. Just ordered a new (larger) swimming costume.

It's a lovely day here but once again spent the day in bed, since the shingles been so tired and the GP did blood tests and found an Iron deficiency so taking some tablets. Hoping that might perk me up a bit.

Pebble21uk · 26/04/2023 14:59

@Orangesandlemons77 There seems to be a lot of shingles about recently. I'm sure I read somewhere it seems to be one of those things that keeps cropping up after having Covid. Both a friend with Long Covid and a carer for my elderly mum have it at present.

@WoofWoofBeachLife do be careful that your obsession with UPFs doesn't tip over into orthorexia. I think so long as the majority of your diet is healthy with a good amount of whole foods, then a few UPFs aren't going to hurt. I look at my very elderly parents at 86 and 89 who eat a lot of UPFs (white sliced bread, Mr Kipling cakes etc) and have done for years and they are still going strong!

CuriousMama · 26/04/2023 23:04

@Orangesandlemons77 that's awful. I've heard shingles is really painful 😣 I had chicken pox as an adult and that was bad enough. I hope you feel better soon?

OP posts:
Orangesandlemons77 · 27/04/2023 09:39

Thanks, I am unsure if the pain is long term but in the meantime I am thankful the GPs have recognised the severity of it and given me some painkillers for nerve pain (pregabalin along with co-codomol) and these together are really helping.

It's looking like another cold ish day out there today, where is the sun? I've a teen on strike day today so I have told him we will go and have lunch with MIL where we tend to meet and listen to a man playing a piano, then we can get our residents card done to access local museums etc.

He's being quite sweet about it - you would think it is not really a top day out for a 14 yr old boy!

I hope you all have a good day and be kind to yourselves

CuriousMama · 27/04/2023 10:19

That sounds a lovely day Oranges. My dss still hang out with me and they're in their 20s. Might change when they have OHs 😉 One has a long distance gf.

I'm still on annual leave. Not much happening today. I've been to the chiropractor early on. It's to do with dizziness and pressure in my head. Amazing what a chiropractor can treat.

Hope everyone else is ok?

WoofWoofBeachLife · 27/04/2023 13:51

@Pebble21uk I'm trying not to be too obsessive with labels, when I found out how quorn was made I felt seedy for a few days as I had made a spag bol with it 😅
That's sounds a lovely wee day oranges, I had a beach walk again, we have a good choice of beaches so depending on the time of year for the tourists we can have a daily walk at one anyway.
Does anyone have bad nail ridges? This is a very recent thing for me. I had read it can be a zinc deficiency. I'm in the process of changing Gp practices so I will ask at the new one. I cleaned the oven last week 🙌 gross, and split a nail, I've ended up with a paronychia. It's the most painful throbber haha, looks like ET's finger. The pharmacist gave me antibiotics yesterday.
Tomorrow is weigh in day. I always say to people don't weigh yourself, its demotivating if you don't lose or don't lose enough. I've still not looked at the utube lift with Cee, I did look out my Davina McCall hand weights does that count? 😅
Hope everyone else is doing good.

CuriousMama · 27/04/2023 15:54

How's quorn made?😳
