Anyone in their 40s/50s plus had a health wake up call?

CuriousMama · 22/03/2023 20:32

I recently went to the GP because of a couple of health worries. She took my BP whilst there and it was really high.
I'm on HRT. I'm overweight but not massively.
So I decided to make a massive effort to change my ways. I've exercised a lot more. Done yoga. Eating smaller portions and healthier food. I eat pretty healthy anyway but have upped it. Drinking beetroot smoothies. It's good for lowering BP. Taking potassium as well as usual vitamins.
She'd prescribed bp meds but I wanted to try and lower it myself first.
Bp has gone down a lot. I feel a lot better in myself and have more energy.

Anyone else had this or decided to get healthier now they're in their 50s?

Good morning, well I've managed to stick to the no sugar no bread and no junk this week. Wednesday I would have eaten biscuits or whatever nice treat was available but luckily we have nothing in the house. I've lost a wee pound which is good I'm happy whatever the loss is. I do feel better, not as bloated and sluggish. I've been in a lot of pain with my conditions this week and painkillers have dulled my appetite 🙃
Let's see how I manage next week when it's a few days to my period 🤣
Hope everyone is good. 🩷

Well done. Bloating is the pits. I'm glad yours has improved 😊

I had a brain injury (mild traumatic brain injury and post concussion syndrome) 8 years ago, then was permanently harmed by an antipsychotic called Pericyazine that was prescribed off label for severe anxiety and insomnia after. I now have a permanent neurological involuntary movement disorder called tardive dyskinesia that is a bit like Tourette's and Parkinson's disease combined, and it really did give me a wake up call for appreciating my health a lot more. You don't know what you have until it's gone unfortunately 😕

I'm afraid that my 40s and 50s will be much harder than they might have been had I not banged my head. I fully anticipate my menopause to be pretty horrid and as I'm very sensitive to medication now, and its side effects exacerbate my involuntary movements a lot more, I think it will be interesting to see how HRT affects me.

My health wake up call is just being appreciative of the good days I have and being able to think clearly without being twitchy and having involuntary movements of my body that have no rhyme nor reason. The good days make me feel very grateful indeed.

Goodness how dreadful. You have an amazing attitude though. Thank you for sharing ❤️

Well I was doing so well all week. Healthy eating. Hardly any meat at mealtimes. Walked the dog most days. Picked up dgs from school today and he came out with a Cadbury's cream egg that he didn't want and I hoovered it up in seconds. Boy it was good 😂😂😂

You definitely deserved it.

Ds2 got himself a chip supper. Let me have a couple of chips. I ran up the road to get a bag. I have exercised a decent amount today but even so 🙈

I was poorly in bed all day yesterday. Started with a migraine and ended up with me being sick. Thought it was just migraine related but DH is down with it today. I'm sure it wasn't the cream egg 😂😂😂

There's weird bugs going around. Get well soon 🙂

How's everyone doing? Beautiful weather here today. I've had a brisk walk with a friend. She finishes work early and I'm off until Saturday. I hadn't seen her for a while so we had jaw ache 🤣
I haven't done W1 R2 yet of C25K. Having a walk out tomorrow with dh so will do that at night.
Bp is pretty normal now. I reckon it can only be because of the exercise?

Doing ok!
Am doing well on being mindful with the food and eating lots of veg and no rubbish.
Still need to get going exercise wise but am walking more with the dog and not sitting down as much in the evenings post dinner

That's good you're doing more. Definitely makes you feel better.

Hello again,
Good to see so many on here. Found out a couple of weeks ago that I have very high blood sugar too so even more determined to stick to my healthier habits.
I've worked out that when I sleep well and stick to my daily yoga routine the rest is so much easier.
I haven't weighed myself but can feel my clothes getting a bit looser. My biceps are more defined and I feel stronger, have more energy and much less brain fog.

Well done to everyone else who is taking steps to take better care of themself.

CuriousMama · 07/04/2023 20:04

@dontwaitforever that's great news.

Hope everyone else is doing well?

WoofWoofBeachLife · 07/04/2023 20:51

Sounds great @dontwaitforever especially when your clothes feel loose, that's a fab feeling! @CuriousMama I've been rubbish tbh, I've not eaten sweets etc but had puff pastry and chips. I was contemplating doing IF again but starting with longer windows. I did well on it before but would do low carb this time because of the NAFLD.
I get frustrated due to feeling fatigued, the pain I can live with just not feeling as f**d every day. I've managed a walk with the dogs everyday apart from Tuesday, I was stuck in bed.
Is anyone else doing IF?
I'm also thinking about changing GP practices for a few reasons, the main one is the lack of communication with results and I feel I'm asking for someone's kidney if I ask questions. The last appointment, when he checked results of a gall bladder scan and said oh yes it was clear but you have a fatty liver, was that explained to you at the time? Eh no! I was told by reception results were clear, nothing was flagged. So now I feel that it's another bloody thing wrong and I want to ask questions, like what stage is my liver at for instance? Should I have a blood test to check? Everything is put down to Fibro or ME or Osteoarthritis.
Sorry for the huge blurb. How is everyone? Happy Easter weekend BTW, no chocolate for us boooo. My Husband had gout and still in a major flare the big soul. 🐣🐰

CuriousMama · 07/04/2023 22:31

@WoofWoofBeachLife I don't blame you changing. That was shocking the way they flippantly mentioned your fatty liver. That's serious!

I've found cinnamon adds sweetness and it's an antioxidant. Do you put the berries in before or after cooking? I've never experimented with frozen.

Oats, milk, berries and cocoa in bowl, microwave 2 mins

JimJammies · 22/03/2023 20:39

I'm thinking about it slowly - after I've finished my chocolate supplies. I really need to get my bottom into gear.

This is me!
I've been diagnosed with high bp.
On tablets now.
I really need to get my act together.
I've been walking a lot more but finding it hard to stop eating junk.
Tbf, I've had birthdays, anniversary etc, so it's been hard with temptation around.

jasminetrampoline · 08/04/2023 07:06

I'd like to start some very gentlr weight training can anyone recommend something?

jasminetrampoline · 08/04/2023 11:32

Found lift with cee, thank you to a pp. Have done first session, feeling very motivated. In my head I'm already shredded not the very overweight unfit old lady I see in the mirror 😂

@jasminetrampoline I'd love to try this lady, I only have 5kg hand weights though. How long are the videos? Xx

CuriousMama · 08/04/2023 22:43

Glad some of us are still here motivating each other 🙂

I'm at work all weekend so can't do my C25K. I'm fairly active at work but it's better to get out of breath.

Thanks @jasminetrampoline for the berry porridge tip!

I've also been looking at Lift with Cee but not made a start yet. Definitely on the list once I get my act together.

I’m not very good at updating, I have been following just not managing to type anything interesting! I’ve just got back from a run in the woods, try to do between 4-5km every day. Would like to aim for 10km each weekend but that’s a way off yet, my medication makes my legs so tired. Hope everyone has a good Easter Sunday!

Wow that's fantastic 😊 I can't even imagine running the 5k I'm supposed to end up doing. I can walk 15 miles though but not the same.
