Anyone in their 40s/50s plus had a health wake up call?

CuriousMama · 22/03/2023 20:32

I recently went to the GP because of a couple of health worries. She took my BP whilst there and it was really high.
I'm on HRT. I'm overweight but not massively.
So I decided to make a massive effort to change my ways. I've exercised a lot more. Done yoga. Eating smaller portions and healthier food. I eat pretty healthy anyway but have upped it. Drinking beetroot smoothies. It's good for lowering BP. Taking potassium as well as usual vitamins.
She'd prescribed bp meds but I wanted to try and lower it myself first.
Bp has gone down a lot. I feel a lot better in myself and have more energy.

Anyone else had this or decided to get healthier now they're in their 50s?

Gout a friend of OH kept getting gout. A new doctor saw him looked at his meds eureka one of his meds side effect was gout. Doctor changed the prescription, no more gout.

I know two electricians who swear that the odd electric shock fixes their arthritic symptoms.

Evening. Just catching up here. I've been super lazy today but was a flare up day so needed to rest. Slept in till midday😂 When I'm like this I can sleep all day. My body hurts from fibro and osteoarthritis plus I get sensory overload which just wipes me out. Then spent afternoon crocheting and watching a nuclear leak documentary my 16 year old dd wanted me to watch 😂 Just binged The Bay and now off to bed so no exercise 😬😬😬 Back to hospital with my dad tomorrow so I'm trying not to let that anxiety get to me. Been 4 weeks of constant tests which included an emergency ward admission for 8 days for an urgent colonoscopy. They didn't do it in the end even though he was given the enema for it and lost all his dignity poor man. He's had a virus that was basically shutting his body down and they couldn't get to the root of it. He's been tentatively diagnosed with a form of Ecoli which led him being in isolation on the ward, hepatitis A, and a few other things I can't remember. He's now being checked for throat cancer but still has to go back on for colonoscopy next week!!! Honestly I didn't think the NHS was that bad until this episode. Anyway sorry for that diversion. Hope everyone's week gets off to a good positive start xxxx

@WingingItSince1973 your poor Dad. Yes my mother is very frail now also, sorting out lots of medical care for her. We are in that 40s/50s category, sandwiched between kids and older parents, but also coping with menopausal and other ‘creeping’ health issues. Cholesterol is my main one, and needing to lose at least 5kg is the other!

I did yoga and went for fast walks this weekend, and ate porridge. But I also had 2 chocolate biscuits as I just felt sorry for myself! 🙄

@LightsOnNow sounds tough and a bit scary!

Wonder if I could buy a taser for him 🤔

Good morning everyone, how is your morning so far?
It's sunny here so I'm making the most of it today and will have a beach walk with the dogs. The Fibro gift that keeps giving is making me want to chop my arms off this morning the pain is ridiculous. The cold doesn't help, it's frosty here! Crazy weather.
I've started the food diary, I couldn't manage the actual porridge this morning, can't lift anything so I've had a porridge bar and shared a banana with the dogs. I'm going to push myself to do a longer walk with them today and hang out my bedding too. Once the painkillers kick in its all systems go here 😆
Reading everyone's updates and stories about your health scares and worries and learning to live with new and progressing conditions makes me feel less alone. Even with no medical conditions, our bodies seem to trip into a different journey in our 40's and its hard to comprehend how suddenly we aren't as fresh and energetic as before. It creeps up and hits you on the face I feel anyway. I'm learning to embrace my body and face as its aging now. Wish I had done it years ago. I should have joined MN sooner. i want to tag people and comment on your posts but by the time i write my reply i forget who im replying to. We need sub threads haha. Gosh that was a long winded post. Have a lovely day everyone. Xx

Morning. Had a decent day yesterday. Healthy lunch dh made. Paprika chicken with noodles. Ds2 is on leave for the forces and we all had a long walk along the coast, almost 7 miles. Aimed for our favourite pub. I had 2.5 pints of real ale and 2 packets of crisps. So not brilliant but I enjoyed it. Bp was normal on the night. I'm was a very relaxing day.
Sunny here today but I've got training 😞. I'm hoping when I ring that it's cancelled. Dh is going to work but ds2 is still here. We could have another walk.
Have a good day everyone 😘

Evening! Wish I could be a bright early bird but I’ve always been groggy in the morning, alert in the evening. Time to accept myself. 😊

Had a really long walk today. So of course kind of ruined it by getting a big milky coffee and some crisps. It was nice though.

Couldn’t face porridge. Ate some veg though. Not losing any weight yet.

Mercedesbenz2022 · 27/03/2023 22:46

Been tweaking my diet , as per some recommendations here

CuriousMama · 27/03/2023 23:03

Evening everyone. Not much to report. Bp not great today. I haven't exercised. I made an appointment for blood tests on the 11th as GP asked me to at last appointment.

Exercise tomorrow though.

That's good you're keeping fit.

Looks like I have a urine infection? Strong smell and nitrates are high. I have some testing sticks at home. Unless it's the beetroot? Anyway I'm putting a test in at our pharmacy. They can prescribe.

My friend (56) has just been told he's terminal - less than 12 months to live. Having palliative chemo.

Don't waste life people. It is far too short!

Does the gluten free diet help with Hashi's?

I avoided both the free pastries and cakes at my meeting in work yesterday-was ok as they had fruit so had a few bits of that instead.
I do feel pretty determined to shed weight and that is a first for a number of years now.
Fingers crossed I will stay this motivated but as so many others have said -it’s not to look better it’s to be healthier and that is hitting different currently.

Am sorry to hear that 💐 Been there with family it's terrible. I hope he's being well supported.

He is @CuriousMama. His family are incredible.

Horrible feeling though, being powerless to help!

@Toooldtoworry sorry that your friend has to face this.

I rarely engage with MN these days as it seems to have lost relevancy. I tend to drop in for specific issues but this thread has been my favourite in a long time and a reminder that others are at the same stage of live.

Some inspiring posts!

I'm glad you're finding it relevant. We need to support each other don't we? Aging ain't for sissys 😉

I went all American there. I've been out at the local quiz and fallen into the late night boozer with dh and ds2 🙈

Good morning, well I've managed to stick to the no sugar no bread and no junk this week. Wednesday I would have eaten biscuits or whatever nice treat was available but luckily we have nothing in the house. I've lost a wee pound which is good I'm happy whatever the loss is. I do feel better, not as bloated and sluggish. I've been in a lot of pain with my conditions this week and painkillers have dulled my appetite 🙃
Let's see how I manage next week when it's a few days to my period 🤣
Hope everyone is good. 🩷

@CuriousMama 😊

Work, teen children, aging mother, chronically sick sister, close friend going through cancer treatment, aging etc have all conspired to me feeling every single day of my 55 years. I am so tired, I feel like I am crawling towards a week off over Easter. I eat when I’m tired, don’t sleep properly and have been pushing myself to just keep going. Even though every Monday starts with must lose a stone, walk 10,000 steps etc I just don’t prioritise it. I turned down a BP appt because I knew I was really stressed and just didn’t want to face it 😳

For the first time I have put my needs first in what we do over Easter and we’re going to the coast for 5 days rather than spending it visiting family overseas. I just want to sleep, read and walk, effectively need a reset for my long term physical and mental health. Unexpectedly I got no complaints from anyone, DH thinks it’s a brilliant idea and both teams have big exams coming up so appreciate some down time.

I think my point is that sometimes we wait until we get a major wake up call but often we see and ignore the signs in the lead up to something bigger. I’m trying to be aware of these signs and take some action now. And take inspiration for the life tweaks so many of you have made.

I really hope you enjoy your break. You definitely need it! Hopefully you can rejig your lifestyle on return?
I've just downloaded C25K app and am going to do that. Would something like that suit you? Won't take a lot of time.
