Living with Goths

I thought that Goths had gone out of fashion. Apparently not.

DH and I were very surprised on Sunday morning by our elder, mid-teens, DD appearing at breakfast fully kitted out in Goth-like clothes.

I'm sure it is a phase - after all, she is going through the most trying years - but how does one "manage" eccentric behaviour like this? I'm trying to take it in my stride, but DH is imitating the volcano in Iceland.

Any suggestions would be most welcome. I'm just about keeping the peace between "No daughter of mine will go out looking like that!" and "You don't understand me. I hate you!".

I'd say if you don't like it, just ignore it bacause the more ranting and raving you do the longer she'll dress like that.

I remember once asking my mum why our washing piles didn't look like the ones on the persil ads to which she replied "because you lot (there are 4 of us) wear nothing but black that's why!" We're all boring sensible dressers now though.

I'm hoping for goth/rock boys. I've been playing them Muse and Green Day since they were in the womb so I'm hopeful.

Well, I was expecting possibly one or two replies, but not quite so many! Thank you so very much. I really appreciate them.

I'm going to print these off and show them to DH. I highly suspect that DH is beginning to realize that his little girl is not quite so little any longer. I think the atmosphere at home is a little calmer today - particularly since I "put my foot down with a firm hand". LOL.

Even if I say it myself, Miss Goth is quite academically gifted and a very kind young lady. I think I can live with Miss Goth, at least for a while. I'm sure her personality won't change. The black clothes are possibly a little gloomy and the makeup rather startling, but DD is still at school and has to wear uniform during the week.

i think also in the teenage 'pick your battles' stakes, this isn't the right fight?

the "it's just a phase" quote is so infuriatingly patronising...even when I was fourteen I was saying..."well I also hope I'm not dressed exactly the same in 10 years time!" ...I like to change my look from time to time!

Must agree with Cuppa and Ellie - also love the steampunk aesthetic!

let her get on with it. my daughter herself said to me Mum its only a phase. They do it to be controversial anyway. so ignore it. Or get a wipe off tattoo and stick it somewhere on you very visible and see what they say..!!!!!

Nothing wrong with Goths at least they ain't out trying to pretend they are hard and part of a posse.

Goth is practically traditional now isn't it?
