Just out of curiosity...why do people dislike Jamie Oliver so much?

I am just watching an episode of Ministry of Food programme and it made me think about how everyone has such a strong opinion of him. But all he seems to be doing is trying to help people out. Am geniunely curious, he neither offends me or endears himself to me.

Val looks like a giant (massive face and head). I like him.

Yeah, reckon Jamie is too successful and over-exposed, but I don't mind him. He certainly has some great recipes. Have just eaten one in fact!

Nige is a god however.

fishie · 22/10/2008 22:32

valentine is up against gadget show so i have never seen him.

latermater · 22/10/2008 23:12

Like Valentine, but not sure there is much to him other than niceness - someone on another thread noted there were too many close ups of him eating, and I agree, but wondered if that was because he runs out of things to say.

I had a LOVELY lunch at his new place in Oxford the other day. Delish. And very sweet young waiting staff, super-efficient and friendly.

GylesBandwidth · 22/10/2008 23:17

I like Jamie.
He is committed and dedicated, if a little shouty and bouncy.
Like a puppy on the scent of a pigs' ear.

pointygravedogger · 22/10/2008 23:27

oh I do likes jamie

Tortington · 23/10/2008 00:04

becuase he is a preaching prick.

he sells books and makes money from tv programmes by preaching a soical concience - hes not a fucking charity worker.

hes making a mint out of this doo gooder act

arsewipe

Waltzywotzy · 23/10/2008 00:07

Blimey Custy you've turned into Julie Critchlow

zippitippitoes · 23/10/2008 00:09

over exposure

Tortington · 23/10/2008 00:09

a journo i presume?

GylesBandwidth · 23/10/2008 00:12

I don't mind people getting paid for doing good things though.
Why shouldn't you get rewarded if you do something that makes a difference?

Skramble · 23/10/2008 00:12

I think his heart is in the right place but he doesn't always come accross well.

In sandals and shorts he looks like a 3yr old. But ach hes allright, trying to do something.

Ozziegirly · 23/10/2008 03:36

Because he's rich and sucessful and happily married and Brits hate that, frankly.

TinySocks · 23/10/2008 05:36

I love him. I think he is fantastic.
A very good role model for families during these chaotic times.

pudding25 · 25/10/2008 13:26

I love Jamie. I think he is amazing (and quite fit too )

needmorecoffee · 25/10/2008 13:37

I think he has the right ideas. The UK diet really is shite and poeple don't know how to cook anymore.
Its about time someone pointed out we are getting fatter and have a crappy diet rather than worrying about hurting people's feelings.
The 4x4 irritates me.

Bucharest · 25/10/2008 13:42

Valentie is quite the ugliest person on TV since...well...since Jamie I suppose.

Jamie lies. I live in the south of Italy, in the town where Jamie went to the school canteen on his turkey twizzler rant and then said on the TV that by law all school food in Italy has to be organic. Bollocks does it. He was also filming, apparently, in a private nursery school, not a state primary like he claimed. I wrote to him but got no reply....

I like his cookbooks though.

hannahsaunt · 25/10/2008 13:51

Jamie scrubs up quite nicely on the front cover of Good Housekeeping this month

needmorecoffee · 25/10/2008 13:54

which of his cookbooks is good? For non-poncey recipes, the sort of thing you'd cook everyday?

Bucharest · 25/10/2008 13:56

The dinners one is good.

His bread recipe is the only one I can follow where it comes out as bread and not building material.

needmorecoffee · 25/10/2008 13:57

whats it called?
I just need some more meal ideas that are cheap, tasty and easy and use normal ingredients, not poncey ones.
Getting bored with what i cook.

BitOfFun · 25/10/2008 14:02

I made a meringuey thing with pears once from a recipe of his - it was delish. I cant make my mind up on him though - he is a bit irritating, but meh, doesn't bother me too much.

NMC, i think if you google him on snopes dot com there is an urban myth about a book of his being leaked on the net. It wasn't actually a leak of his book, just old recipes of his, but they are good, and you can have a look at some for free that way. Am I a big illegal cheapskate?

YumeeMumee · 25/10/2008 14:52

I don't usually mind him but watching 'Ministry of Food' and hearing all his swearing did annoy me.

Whats that all about then? He sounds so false...trying to be your stereotypical 'bloke on the street' as other MNers have put it.

hifi · 25/10/2008 15:23

he has TERRIBLE hair. someone should be able to sort it.

needmorecoffee · 25/10/2008 16:31

don't notice hair.
I thought he was from Essex spo would have an accent like that?
