Born in the 70’s, did you have paracetamol etc?

As a child I don’t remember being given any medicine if I was ill, only if I went to the doctors and was given antibiotics. If I was unwell I was wrapped in a blanket and put in bed with a hot water bottle. Were you given any painkillers like we give today?

Born late fifties, we were given very little medicine (that’s what we called it, not “medication”). We would have been expected to tolerate pain unless it was very severe and then the doctor would be called out, but would have been given something for fever.

Dispirin, Benylin and Andrews were the entire medical cupboard.

Morethanthis71 · Today 09:06

No, we used to get Lucozade.

Born 80s. Never had any painkiller as a kid. Mum maintains calpol didn’t exist but I remember friends talking about “cow pole”….

They were free in the 70s.

Perhaps in your country; not in mine.

Georgieporgie29 · Today 09:07

I was definitely given paracetamol as I remember the tablets were massive and my DM used to crush them between 2 spoons for me.

Most of the above, and the absolute joy of a packet of Tunes!
I remember having them on my desk at school and saying to the teacher my mum said I can eat them.in class, they're not sweets! ( She didn't!)

My Grandma always had a packet of Tunes
We used to get one for a treat😂

Blingismything · Today 09:10

We had Junior Disprin. Adults had paracetamol (I think) in a brown glass bottle with a cotton wool ball in the neck of the bottle with a standard lid, this was kept on the top shelf of the bathroom cabinet. We also had Calamine lotion for chickenpox, pink Germolene with a plaster for grazed knees and the ubiquitous bottle of TCP.

I was born 1967 and come to think of it I don't remember having painkillers. I think there are times we had savlon in, like when I was bitten by a horse on my leg.

I suspect people didn't have so much money left after bills in those days though. People didn't have so many holidays, eat out at restaurants, go to cafes etc.

Undoubtedly. Food was a lot more expensive then, relative to everything else. Housing was cheaper, though. Swings and roundabouts.

JessicaBrassica · Today 09:11

Junior disparin. Mum had dispersible solperdine on prescription so I took that.
Kaolin and morphine
Tcp
Iodine on cuts (hurt like hell)

I had Calpol in hospital and thought it was disgusting. I remembered something nasty but it was only when giving it to my children and kicking it off my finger could I make the horrible hospital medicine.
I also had a lot of banana flavoured amoxcil.

Rabarbarasulta · Today 09:11

Junior Disprin, Benylin, Vicks, milk of magnesia and a teaspoon of malt extract! Not all at once of course 😁
Mum would make us a hot drink of honey, lemon juice and glycerin if we had a sore throat.
My grandma firmly believed in the power of a bottle of Lucozade and a bunch of grapes to cure all illness. Lucozade came in a big glass bottle at the time, and looked quite medicinal

Piggywaspushed · Today 09:11

There was a point at which everything became deregulated (must be 80s) and you could buy virtual vats of paracetamol - like in tubs of 100. This then got stopped, for obvious reasons (you can still buy ridiculously large containers of ibuprofen in the US).

I remember Panadol and Disprin, Vicks and calamine lotion. I assume clove oil for teething but, as I was a baby, I don't remember!

Lack of drugs is probably something my US mum will have found backward. She had Pampers shipped over.

GordanoServices · Today 09:13

Yes my mum used to crush a paracetamol tablet between 2 spoons and add some jam to it.

MontyMadness99 · Today 09:13

Germolene - loved the smell
Milk of Magnesia - punishment for not eating vegetables
Junior Disprin
Crushed paracetamol with a dollop of jam!
Vicks - vapour rub and sinex

Putting a thermometer in your tea and shaking it down to a reasonably high temperature to skive off school.

everynowandthenifallapart · Today 09:13

Disprin as well.

Plus lemon and honey for my chronic asthma 🤨

Piggywaspushed · Today 09:13

Cherry Tunes! And Lockets! Yum.

@RampantIvy I’d completely forgotten about Disprin. That’s what I was given if I was ever ill which I wasn’t very often. (Born 1977)

Yup, disprin.

ShiftySquirrel · Today 09:14

Early 80s kid here.
We had disprin, lucozade, Vicks, Karvol capsules for colds. My grandma kept a stash of tiny black "sweets" in a tin for coughs -they were disgusting. I remember banana medicine too, and the hideous worm medicine. Also calamine lotion for rashes and stings, plus a bit of savlon.

My grandad was a pharmacist so he was the first port of call, but if it was very bad I remember the doctor visiting. Me and db both caught measles, mumps and rubella at various times, and chicken pox of course. I still remember the curtains being kept tight shut for mumps, and bed rest. We both had that at the same time of course, poor mum!

@tcateh i uswd to live tunes!!! proper comfort . Also lemsips!!!

I always take Lemsip at the first sign of a cold. I expect a lot of the effect is psychological, but they help with keeping the fluids up as well as getting some paracatemol, pseudoephedrine (I think, for stuffy noses) and Vitamin C.

Brickiscool · Today 09:15

Born 70s. Only if the pain was incredibly bad then dispersable disprin.
So it didn't dissolve it just broke into small bits and you had to try and drink it down. Only for really bad ear ache

Clearingaspace · Today 09:15

Think it might vary a lot depending which part of the 70s. Depending on how old we are talking,I had calpol, lemsips, Vicks, paracetamol tabs etc - I had forgotten benilyn but pretty sure we had that. My mum tried all the cures really, lucazade, cough sweets, Tunes etc. it’s possible I am also thinking of things younger siblings had.

MontyMadness99 · Today 09:15

My mother openly admitted to giving us Phenergan on rare occasions to get a good night’s sleep/travelling overnight.

We had what they called "junior aspirin". This would have been around early 1970s.

Yes! Orangey taste.

OhMyGiddyAuntFanny · Today 09:16

Born in 1957. Can’t remember being given anything other than lucozade when I had a cold and a glass of warm milk with a knob of butter in it. I do remember mum having Anadin tablets and Beecham’s Powders in the high cupboards but I don’t remember being given any of those.

HelenHywater · Today 09:16

We just had aspirin tablets.

Vick's vapour rubs for colds, Lucozade when we were ill, and tcp or germolene and plasters for cuts. Salt or dettox in the bath.

Occasionally cod liver oil as a preventative. (yuck). I only remember calamine when we had chicken pox.
