Born in the 70’s, did you have paracetamol etc?

As a child I don’t remember being given any medicine if I was ill, only if I went to the doctors and was given antibiotics. If I was unwell I was wrapped in a blanket and put in bed with a hot water bottle. Were you given any painkillers like we give today?

Not me but my parents also used to get Kaolin and Morphine over the counter.

Yes, that morphine 😅

Collis Brown's Liquid was a game changer for me. I have IBS and it made my life so much easier. When it became harder to get hold of, I stockpiled and still have a very little left but I keep it as a talisman and not to use!! happily modern drug free alternatives have emerged.

Sickly sweet Calpol. I remember being around 6 and I took the bottle fro the kitchen and drank it all. I was taken to hospital and forced to drink an awful orange tasting liquid to make me sick. I didn't do it again😂

Davros · Today 10:20

I was born in 1960 and I remember Junior Aspirin. Never got any though and Lucozade was only for hospitalised adults. I never gave my kids Calpol or similar either

Aspirin and loads of antibiotics (banana medicine).
I also had suppositories for something, I found them hilarious, I’ve no idea what they were for or what they contained.

Born in 1960. Disprin for us, and gargling with soluble disprin if we had a sore throat. Mercurochrome bright red antiseptic for scrapes and grazes. Both disprin and mercurochrome now banned. Savlon for splinters, with a plaster over. Calomine lotion for sunburn. That was about it I think.

Oh I remember Kaolin and Morphine. And yes, it really was morphine. It was very expensive and used sparingly. A bottle would last for years.

My dad loved that stuff. Now I see why...

Shinyandnew1 · Today 10:21

Junior Asprin
Benylin for chesty coughs
kaolin and morphine for upset stomach
calamine for sun burn
Germolene pink stuff for wounds
Vicks in a jar
There was a tube of stuff for chillblains!

Mostly though, a bath, a water bottle and an early night seemed to cure most ills in the 80s!

I remember later, Nurofen being advertised and also more specific things like Migraleve that my mum used to buy and chloraseptic throat spray being very exciting!

I wasn't born in the 1970s

but I remember aspirin, banana medicine, cough medicine and milk of magnesia, which hazel and tcp

the banana medicine wasn't antibiotic as I didn't have antibiotics until I was 24y

Edited

I’m so glad that you said this! I distinctly remember a yellow banana flavoured medicine that appeared sporadically through my childhood, all whilst having it drummed into me that I was allergic to Amoxicillin after a childhood reaction to it, and should always ask for other antibiotics if penicillin is being prescribed. I have always stuck to this, but after reading online that the children’s Amoxicillin was a banana flavoured medicine I have recently doubted myself about the whole allergy thing (despite having lots of memories about being told I can’t have it) and can’t verify it with my mum as she died years ago. I wonder what the other banana medicine was? (maybe someone else knows the answer to this!)

Junior disprin dissolved in a glass of diluting juice (squash for those south of the border). Vicks for colds and dettol for grazed and cuts.

NimbleTaupeTiger · Today 08:30

We had what they called "junior aspirin". This would have been around early 1970s.

We had that too-I was born 1970

TheLastSilverSaint · Today 10:25

I was born in the 70s. When I was very little we got aspirin for fever, sore throats and headache etc. By the time I was around 10 or 11 it was paracetamol.

99doubledeckerbuses · Today 10:26

Does anyone remember indian brandee/brandy? The absolute go to for any stomach aches. It was some kind of herbal remedy with rather a lot of alcohol in it.

For all the lucozade fans, you can still buy this made to the original recipe. It's now called enerzade.

stringbean · Today 10:26

dementedpixie · Today 08:36

Disprin dissolved on a teaspoon and followed by a drink of water as it tasted disgusting

Yep, we had this too. Dm would crush it and add couple drops of water to dissolve. It was foul! Dm was a nurse too so don’t think it was that unusual for the time.

LemonTreeGrove · Today 10:26

We had calamine lotion for sunburn. It was pink and dried crusty

Monty36 · Today 10:27

In the 70’s I remember aspirin. And that if very ill adult or child the Doctor visited you at home.

Scuttlingupabove · Today 10:27

I had pneumonia and remember a disgusting soluble pink drink I was given which presumably was antibiotics of some sort? I was allowed a piece of chocolate after it as it was so horrible. My mum was also big on cod liver oil but used to pierce these massive capsules which maybe were too tough to swallow. We had to have the liquid on a spoon and then a spoonful of extract of malt as a treat. Who says the 1970s didnt have nice things!?

stringbean · Today 10:27

And kaolin and morphine for upset stomach - remember a bottle of that in the bathroom cabinet.

MrsBrianJones · Today 10:29

Disprin, triaminic syrup which was orange for sinuses/ catarrh, pink syrup when I had chickenpox and rarely an adult aspirin. Always Lucozade in the glass bottle with the film. I don't remember ever having paracetamol.

Hydrangeblueeyes · Today 10:29

Junior aspirin, orange tablet.Subsequently found to be very dangerous for children!

HorseandHeron · Today 10:29

Born in 60s.
Junior aspirin for fever or headaches.
Mentholatum for wheezy chests and chapped lips (stung like hell)
Savlon for cuts and grazes and burns.
Hot water bottle for stomach aches or cramps

Hollyhobbi · Today 10:30

I was always getting strep throat including Scatlet fever! So antibiotics and gargling Disprin. And diluted fertile on cuts! Ouch.

Enko · Today 10:30

Goinggreymammy · Today 09:49

I got tonsillitis a lot too. I now believe that if i had been given paracetamol early on, the infections wouldn't have gotten so bad. I've managed to not have antibiotics for years as an adult, by treating myself immediately with paracetamol at the first twinge in my tonsils.

Mine were eventually removed and I've rarely had any throat issues since.

zen1 · Today 10:31

Born in the 70s. These are things I remember from the medicine cabinet:
Rennie tablets for indigestion
Savlon / TCP / Germolene for minor injuries
Junior Disprin
Individual Antiseptic wipes in a metallic wrapping
Vicks vapour rub
Rinstead mouth ulcer pastilles
Bonjela gel
an eye bath

I loved TCP - it seemed to be a cure all for all cuts, blemishes and insect bites!

HorseandHeron · Today 10:31

stringbean · Today 10:27

And kaolin and morphine for upset stomach - remember a bottle of that in the bathroom cabinet.

Oh yes, that too I forgot. We had one ancient bottle that lasted for ever and the ingredients separated.

My dad had Andrew's Liver Salts which I loved as they were sparkling. I used to sneak sips of his drink. Don't know why he took them. He didn't drink much except at Christmas and parties.

BigAnne · Today 10:31

Askit powder in milk.
