Born in the 70’s, did you have paracetamol etc?

As a child I don’t remember being given any medicine if I was ill, only if I went to the doctors and was given antibiotics. If I was unwell I was wrapped in a blanket and put in bed with a hot water bottle. Were you given any painkillers like we give today?

Junior asprin/disprin dissolved. We never had calpol, but I do remember having paracetamol tablets as a teenager.

Vicks vapour rub for a cold and the Vicks things which went in your nose. Cough medicine.

I remember kaolin and morphine. Sounds a bit strange now.

@Andsoitbeganagain there was an orangey tablet for sore throats that was delicious! I think it was called Dequadin or something like that.

Edit: sorry @Lavendeenlue I see you already said that.

Junior Asprin attractive sweet tasting little orange tablets dispensed freely from a tub (no blister packs) : what could possibly go wrong?

Doctors (who routinely made house calls) used to prescribe some chalky pink medicine in a bottle with a cork. Same for every complaint. No idea what it was (1960s)

Lucozade with the exciting orange cellophane wrapper - was only ever a medicinal drink.

Edited

Yeah the cellophane- peak excitement! Life seemed so simple then. Do you remember tangerines being wrapped in paper too?

I was born 1967 and come to think of it I don't remember having painkillers. I think there are times we had savlon in, like when I was bitten by a horse on my leg.

I suspect people didn't have so much money left after bills in those days though. People didn't have so many holidays, eat out at restaurants, go to cafes etc.

Tickingcrocodile · Today 08:51

Like others, disprin was the go to, then the very sugary calpol was brought in. Not a painkiller, but I remember the old form of amoxicillin for throat and ear infections was bright yellow and delicious!

Worst medication was without doubt pripsen for worms....

They weren’t delicious!!!! Did they numb the throat?

Tcateh · Today 08:52

Most of the above, and the absolute joy of a packet of Tunes!
I remember having them on my desk at school and saying to the teacher my mum said I can eat them.in class, they're not sweets! ( She didn't!)

shellyleppard · Today 08:52

born in 1969. Most of the time if i was ill it was tucked up on the sofa with lucozade (in the orange crinkly wrapper) and a blanket. Unless it was really bad then a doctors visit was required

Was it tyrozets?

Lindy2 · Today 08:53

Disprin or a standard asprin dissolved in water for headaches or fever. It had a horrible acidic taste.

Sore throats were cured by a dequadin tablet with a strange orange taste. They did the job though - I really should seek some out if they're still around as they worked well.

Rashes we're smothered in drapoline cream or calamine lotion.

Anything stomach related was treated with a milk of magnesia tablet. It was like chewing on minty chalk.

@tcateh i uswd to live tunes!!! proper comfort . Also lemsips!!!

miracleboy · Today 08:53

Yes to disprin, andrews liver salts if nauseous and a hot whisky toddy before bed for a cold! In the winter months had a spoon of malt extract before school to ward of ailments.

I found them very tasty but I can’t remember how effective they were.

Oh my god I remember that delicious creamy antibiotic medicine! Loved that.

Isitmyluckyday · Today 08:55

There was aspirin and disprin, drops for earache , medicine for upset tummies. But only used infrequently and for short periods.

TinyGingerCat · Today 08:55

Chewable asprin that tasted like oranges, banana flavoured penicillin that had a hideous slimy texture and cherry favoured benelin cough mixture that made you sleep like you were dead. My mum was a nurse and we were never allowed lucozade as she said it was just expensive sugar water. Your family was weird OP as effective medicine definitely existed in the 1970s 🤣

I'd forgotten the worm medicine 😮Blanked it out in horror, evidently.

Tasted like someone mixed blood and chalk together.

shellyleppard · Today 08:55

@Lavendeenlue and lockets.....always tasted weird lol

2chocolateoranges · Today 08:56

I was born in the late 70s and If we were unwell it was a disprin which was dissolved in water to drink, hot water bottle, lucozade and bed rest for us.

though real “medication” for us was barrs cream soda fizzy juice. 😂 it still makes me feel better now.

bababamama · Today 08:57

Disprin (soluble aspirin) available as junior disprin was given freely in my house. Got banned in the 80’s for under 12’s due it being linked to a rare but serious condition called Reyes syndrome.

UncompromisingCat · Today 08:57

Born mid 60s. Junior Disprin existed but I don't remember getting it... my mother didn't believe in 'taking pills', but I could really have done with antihistamines in the summer... 🤧

Topical things were more acceptable - Vicks rubbed on your chest, witch hazel for bumps and bruises, and some stinky eucalyptus stuff in your Dad's big cotton handkerchief for colds - it came in a capsule that you broke open to release the oil.

You kept the handkerchief bunched up your sleeve and re-used it all day, re-folding it to try and find the less green bits - no wonder we always had colds... 🤢

Ilovemyshed · Today 08:58

Sweet pink calpol as a child. Plus soluble disprin and aspirin (aspro).

Bright orange lucozade.

Black liquafruta for coughs.

Haliborange liquid or tablets for vit C.
Virol or minadex for supplements.

Nursegladys2 · Today 08:58

Disprin for pain/ temperature or thick pink calpol kept in a big brown glass bottle in the pantry. Vicks everywhere. Dettol for cuts and grazes. I don't remember being taken to the doctors very often.

Skybluecoat · Today 08:58

@TinyGingerCat
apparently there was chloroform and codeine in old formula Benylin! I loved it!
