Born in the 70’s, did you have paracetamol etc?

As a child I don’t remember being given any medicine if I was ill, only if I went to the doctors and was given antibiotics. If I was unwell I was wrapped in a blanket and put in bed with a hot water bottle. Were you given any painkillers like we give today?

We had what they called "junior aspirin". This would have been around early 1970s.

Yep same, junior aspirin. And cough mixtures from the GP if we had a cough - God knows what was in them!

I definitely don’t remember having anything dissolved.

I do, it was vile- soluble aspirin, milk of magnesia( equally vile), lucazade, Calomine lotion, a hot water bottle or Germaline was it. If you weren’t cured by any of these 6 you weren’t ill.

NestofVapers · Today 08:39

Yes, pink sugary Calpol! I also remember my grandmother crushing up some paracetamol and hiding it in a spoonful of jam.

Oh yes and Vicks!

I remember a small orangey tablet. I remember hearing of junior aspirin but can't remember if it was the same thing. Lucozade only when I was really poorly.

TheCabbageMerchant · Today 08:40

Born late 70s here, no Calpol but mum was a nurse and she used to crush up paracetemol in a teaspoon of milk if I needed it but I don't think I was ill that often as I barely remember it happening.

I do however been given kaolin and morphine 😟

Sgtmajormummy · Today 08:41

Venos Cough Mixture. It tasted of hot liquorice and we loved it. Also cherry flavored cough mixture from the doctor.
Germolene, Milk of Magnesia, Calamine lotion and sticking plaster cut off a sheet.
I only heard about Calpol in the 80s.

We weren't given cough mixtures as Mim was convinced they didn't work and was probably right. Nor Vicks for some reason, my friends had it and those stick inhaler things to hold up to your nostrils were objects of envy at school.

Yes!!!! I remember the stick. The same one went back in the cabinet to be used by whoever needed it next!🤢

MissyB1 · Today 08:42

pp mentioned Kaolin and morphine for an upset tummy, that stuff was amazing did exactly what you wanted it to do, and made you feel relaxed and comfortable too - the morphine I guess 😂

RampantIvy · Today 08:42

When I had a cold my mum used to soak a piece of cloth in vinegar and hang it by the bed. This would have been in the 1960s.

BloddersMum · Today 08:42

Junior disprin or paracetamol crushed between two teaspoons and then mixed with a teaspoon of jam if we got anything. I was born in 1974.

Paracetamol in jam is the way mam still gives it to dd14 if she is at her house and has period pain!

cheezncrackers · Today 08:43

Born in the 70s and yes we had medicines - of course we did! Your family was just weird.

It was Dequadin, the orange antiseptic tablets for sore throats that didn’t work!!! Also vile but yes we had those too.

HoldMyWine · Today 08:44

Born 1971 I remember having disprin when little and then paracetamol later, chopped in half to begin with.

Seagulldancing · Today 08:44

Not only paracetamol, DM would dish out paracetamol with codeine like sweets. MiL was the same.

dementedpixie · Today 08:45

Did anyone use tyrozets for sore throats? Made your mouth numb. Loved them 😆

LondonLass2026 · Today 08:46

Yep, Disprin here. Born mid 70s. It was dissolved in water.

OffTheMap · Today 08:47

Junior Asprin attractive sweet tasting little orange tablets dispensed freely from a tub (no blister packs) : what could possibly go wrong?

Doctors (who routinely made house calls) used to prescribe some chalky pink medicine in a bottle with a cork. Same for every complaint. No idea what it was (1960s)

Lucozade with the exciting orange cellophane wrapper - was only ever a medicinal drink.

TheGruffalosNan · Today 08:48

Disprin dissolved on a teaspoon and followed by a drink of water as it tasted disgusting

Wasn't it the most disgusting stuff but it worked!

Lavendeenlue · Today 08:49

I think the thing was most remedies were vile and pretty useless so we either avoided or didn’t bother. I remember refusing soluble aspirin and milk of magnesia multiple times. You were really ill when the Lucazade and Heinz tomato soup appeared. That was a chicken pox or mumps event.

Yes, I remember the orange tablets. They tasted quite nice so I ate a lot of them and had to go to hospital for a stomach pump! At around that time the pharmaceutical companies stopped making medicine taste nice, to avoid encouraging children to view tablets like sweets.

Yes!
They contained actual penicillin and nearly killed me with a severe allergic reaction

Skybluecoat · Today 08:50

Born in 1965.

Yes to disprin.

But the best thing was having a cough and being able to take Benilyn. Back in the day before they took out the ingredient that gave a proper hit!!

Phrootbaht · Today 08:50

Born 1969.
Soluble aspirin “disprin”, pink germolene cream, liquid TCP that smelt like cat’s piss, lemon or brown flavoured cough syrup that was seemingly 99% sugar!
But best of all was a glass of original Lucozade. It came in a glass bottle wrapped in orange cellophane. You only had a glass when you were ill so it could be sat there in the larder for months, having lost its fizz by the end!

ETA: Milk of magnesia! 🤮

There was no paracetamol.

Wafffly · Today 08:50

Born 1969. We were given disprin for pretty much everything. That and a damp flannel to drape over your forehead if you had a fever.
