Born in the 70’s, did you have paracetamol etc?

As a child I don’t remember being given any medicine if I was ill, only if I went to the doctors and was given antibiotics. If I was unwell I was wrapped in a blanket and put in bed with a hot water bottle. Were you given any painkillers like we give today?

YY to pink germolene and milk of magnesia. Witch hazel as well, for bumped heads and bruises.

Lol you could get milk and vitamin drops from the clinic in the 90s.

Not in our area. We had a baby clinic at the GP surgery and I don't remember anything being sold. Maybe it wasn't relevant as I breastfed my children and didn't need formula. I have a dim memory that vitamin drops were recommended for formula fed babies.

Lucozade was bought from the Chemist, and was wrapped in Sellophane.

When I had toothache mum soaked cotton wool in Whiskey, and put it on there.

We hardly went to the Dr, once went to A&E when I cracked my head.

I don’t think many younger parents know how to treat common childhood complaints at home, everything is a trip to the GP, or A&E.

Yes I remember that, a glass bottle and that yellowy orange cellophane. There was also Complan. I remember asking my mum why anyone would need Complan and why if they needed food they didn't just eat food?

The concept of needing nourishment but being off your food was completely lost on me. She said it was mostly for old people, as if that made more sense. Confused

Born in 1971. I don’t remember any (although I think my friend used to have dispirin at her house…) I had awful (and I mean awful) period pain (this would have been mid 80s) and just had to wait it out. The doctor told me to take evening primrose oil. At 16 I took myself to the doctor who prescribed the pill. It wasn’t until I was in my 30s and came off the pill that a friend told me I could take ibuprofen just before my period and it would help. I remember feeling a bit stupid and upset at this revelation.

No need to feel stupid. Almost nothing did any good for my period pain. I was diagnosed with endometriosis eventually, which went some way to explain it. Hurrah for the menopause!

And speaking of buying Lucozade at the chemist, does anyone remember Limits? Revolting metallic tasting biscuits that you could buy in the chemist, with a cream filling full of artificial sweetener that were meant to be for people on a diet?

As a chubby child of around ten I remember buying them once or twice with my pocket money thinking eating them would make me slimmer.

I have always absolutely loved my food. I remember once in my early teens sitting down to our evening meal and really looking forward to it as my Mum had made a sausage pie. It looked and smelled great but to my disgust and horror I found I couldn't eat it as I was starting to feel very rough, and had to ask to leave the table and go and lie down. 50+ years later I am still annoyed with my immune system for letting me down like that!

We had what they called "junior aspirin". This would have been around early 1970s.

I remember this and recall it was orange flavoured

Yes, I remember Limits - I think my mother used to get them when she was trying to lose weight! She also ate Slimcea bread which was mostly air! I also vaguely remember Ayds - sweet like things to eat instead of a meal - dread to think what was in them!

Did anyone have Gentian Violet? Can remember that being painted onto cuts or bites but no idea what effect it had!

stringbean · Today 11:54

And yes to Limits - dm bought these a couple of times and used to hide them in the cloakroom; no idea why, maybe to stop us kids from finding them? remember trying one of the chocolates; they were revolting!
