Born in the 70’s, did you have paracetamol etc?

As a child I don’t remember being given any medicine if I was ill, only if I went to the doctors and was given antibiotics. If I was unwell I was wrapped in a blanket and put in bed with a hot water bottle. Were you given any painkillers like we give today?

Does anyone remember indian brandee/brandy? The absolute go to for any stomach aches. It was some kind of herbal remedy with rather a lot of alcohol in it.

For all the lucozade fans, you can still buy this made to the original recipe. It's now called enerzade.

Indian brandee was more or less the same as collis browns liquid. Kaolin and morphine on an alcohol base with mint.

Soluble disprin. I loved these taste, probably full of sugar 😀

INeedAnotherName · Today 10:35

Crushed aspirin in jam.
Milk of Magnesia
Andrews Liver Salts
A cough mixture that you had to ask for, can't think of its name but was brilliant.
TCP, Germaline and Savlon
Vicks, on chest and as a steam inhalation.
Dettol only for cleaning up any mishaps
Rosehip syrup. So sad when they stopped making that 😩

Otherwise she made her own concoctions such as putting brown sugar on a (Spanish?) onion for coughs, squeezing her own lemons for honey n lemon drinks, and a herbal book. Money was very tight.

No paracetamol until I was twenty.

I remember calamine lotion for chicken pox and Vicks on your chest for colds. I did get banana antibiotics when I was about 9 for an ear or throat infection, can't remember which. There was definitely Pripsen for worms. There was some horrible smelling stuff on your head for nits, which I remember Dad saying was the same chemical he sprayed on wheat (presumablyjust some insecticide.) I remember there being cellophane-wrapped Lucozade in the house once, but I think it was for Dad, not us. Our school nurse had Savlon for and cuts or scrapes, and I still have some because of the smell, which makes it comforting. There might have been junior aspirin, but I don't remember. And Andrew's liver salts, but I don't think that was for children. Bonjela for mouth ulcers.

I had impetigo around age 6 or 7, which had some cream on, poisonous if ingested, and I somehow managed to get some on my tongue and ran to mum with my tongue out, convinced I was going to die.

Mostly, we didn't get ill - I think I had 3 sick days off school in my years at school. I still seem to have an effective immune system.

I have had hayfever since I was a toddler, so mum did take me to the doctor (another rare event) when i was 12, so we could get a solution before exam years. I was prescribed Triludan, which I really struggled with swallowing the pills of to start with.

I think the medicine cupboard was just Calamine lotion, Vicks, Bonjela and the Andrew's and plasters. Prescription stuff and Pripsen came in and out of the house only as needed.

Born 75.
had junior dispirin, Vicks (laughing uncontrollably whilst it was rubbed onto my chest). Also black veno’s cough mixture. If very bad, pholcodeine linctus which was fantastic!
germolene in a tin stung like a fucker!!!!

GeorgeMichaelsCat · Today 10:38

I was given Beechams powders if I was sick, so basically aspirin.

godmum56 · Today 10:38

oh! also milk of magnesia for constipation (I never was given it, never needed it) but also it was used on rashes instead of calomine lotion....amazingly you can still get it.

KiwiGolden · Today 10:40

Born in 1973 - we always had Calpol if we were unwell, Milk of Magnesia for upset tummies and Diocalm tablets. I don't remember being given pain relief tablets at all. My sister had a lot of chesty issues as a child and mum would burn a Wrights Coal Tar vapour burner in her room at night.

Mum also made us take these little vitamin tablets every day in the winter, I can't remember exactly what they were called but they were like little fruit flavoured balls. Maybe Sanatogen or something similar?

And if we had sore throats my dad would make us his 'famous' Butter Balls which were basically margarine balls rolled in sugar - we loved them at them time but they make me want to physically retch as the thought now.

Davros · Today 10:40

My mum went into a chemist in New York many years ago and asked for Kaolin and Morphine. They were about to call the cops, miranda-ise her and get her to spread ‘em. She somehow persuaded them not to, probably by playing the dotty English lady

ohtowinthelottery · Today 10:40

Born 1964. Definitely remember having junior asprin (little orange tablets IIRC). Vicks vapour rub featured quite regularly too. And Lucozade was definitely allowed only when you were ill/recovering.

I had pneumonia and remember a disgusting soluble pink drink I was given which presumably was antibiotics of some sort? I was allowed a piece of chocolate after it as it was so horrible. My mum was also big on cod liver oil but used to pierce these massive capsules which maybe were too tough to swallow. We had to have the liquid on a spoon and then a spoonful of extract of malt as a treat. Who says the 1970s didnt have nice things!?

There was a disgusting soluble pink medicine (always called The Pink Medicine in tones of fear and dread) for worms. It was sort of raspberry flavour but absolutely rank. Slightly frothy when made up. It was the worst thing ever.

I remember people gargling TCP

I'd forgotten about that, but we only used the TCP if the salt water one wasn't working (which I still do).

@DavrosI remember that stuff. It used to separate in the bottle. It tasted absolutely disgusting. Don't think I could ever have become addicted to it.

That's Pripsen.

Me too - it was horrible! Didn't you have to shake the mixture and then dilute with water before drinking it? It also came in a huge medicine bottle I remember.

Mydogisagentleman · Today 10:47

Junior aspirin. Yum
Friars balsam and hot water
Kaolin poultice
Tomato soup and crisp sandwiches. Both well known cures for tonsillitis, to be fair it was probably the black and scarlet antibiotics

Wishihadanalgorithm · Today 10:49

Born 1973 and I had:
junior disprin for pain
kaolin and morphine for upset stomachs
calamine lotions for chicken pox
bradasol throat tablets for sore throats
Warm olive oil for earache
antibiotics given out for any cough and cold - often a disgusting banana flavour

LeapyearLoser · Today 10:50

Soluble aspirin and tiny black pills for travel sickness were the only meds kept in the house for children but a brown bottle of DGs for my Dad lived on kitchen windowsill.
Bottle of lucozade from pharmacy for rare sick days from school.

Chocolateforbreakfasttoday · Today 10:53

Born in 1975. Junior Disprin which was ripped out of its tinfoil packaging and dissolved in water. Milk of Magnesia for all digestive ailments

Yesitismeandiamcomingforyou · Today 10:53

In the seventies and early eighties before soluble paracetamol or anything specifically for children was available, my parents would crush a paracetamol between two spoons and mix in a little jam to help it go down

Truinio · Today 10:54

Yes of course. And junior aspirin. And antihistamines when I had hay fever, and antihistamine cream (anthisan?) for wasp stings and mozzie bites. Beecham powders when we had a cold. Born 1970.

TheAmberKoala · Today 10:55

IME they were much more gung ho about paracetamol than they are today, not the other way round.

ChocolateCinderToffee · Today 10:56

As a very small child I remember being given stuff called ‘Yellow Mixture’ which I think was a kind of cough medicine in a square bottle. I loved it. This was in the 60s. Also asirin and Three Noughts cough medicine.

SurferRona · Today 10:56

Yes to disprin, sometimes dissolved, milk of magnesia and calamine. Proper plasters which stuck!

No nits at any of mine or sisters schools! They seem to be much more common today, I wonder why ? (And yes, we were clean and washed hair regularly!)

OffTheMap · Today 10:58

To fend off ailments of all kind we had a daily spoonful of Virol.

Which tasted of fruity toffee.
