my son graduated from there too, disappointed we had only a video of him
speaking to the graduates, a wonderful sonorous voice though
we really hoped he would be there on a dull wet Yorkshire day, 14 years ago

I worked at this university when he was Chancellor.
He once did a Q&A for staff and he was brilliant.

BinfluencerEarly · 29/10/2026 21:09

My step-father was a prof at Huddersfield University and involved in getting him the chancellorship. (He was also active in local politics and behind getting Stewart to do civic stuff in Mirfield!)

Sir Patrick was always so happy and generous to help out locally even many decades after he'd left. There aren't many who travel from the sunshine of Los Angeles to the rain of West Yorkshire to do that!

justasking111 · 29/10/2026 21:10

Such a sad day. William Shatner gave a good tribute on Instagram. Bad week for the trekkies.

Yes! He needs to get it together

I found myself really shocked and saddened by this. I am such a huge TNG fan, and have in fact been doing yet another leisurely rewatch. Also loved him in American Dad.
I was very sorry to read that he'd been suffering from Lewy Body Dementia, it's a cruel illness.

CurlewKate · 29/10/2026 21:19

Gloriously outspoken for VAWAG. Pretty good actor too.

JuanaSmith · 29/10/2026 21:23

So sad. Need another TNG rewatch.

Au revoir, Jean Luc. 😥

He is a gay man either an actor or composer and believes Frasier is gay too and befriends him with an eye to romance. Martin knows and watched with amusement

That is one of the best episodes ever!

RIP
I met him as a child, by chance, when I was wandering round a large hall at an event. My parents were mortified as I was oblivious and they were massive Star Trek fans. Even in passing he was polite, smiling and had a big presence - so much so that I’d remembered his face and pointed him out to them!

ThreeLocusts · 29/10/2026 21:56

I seem to remember that he spoke out about the domestic abuse his mother had suffered, and how police and social workers would hint that she 'must have done something to provoke it'. Much respect to him for not staying quiet about a topic that most people would rather avoid, and for explicitly rejecting the 'fault on both sides' argument. Rest in peace.

This has really upset me. I was abused as a child and when I felt scared and alone I would imagine him rescuing us with the Star Trek crew and taking us away to safety.

And when I was an adult and in an abusive marriage, he was featured in a domestic abuse training video I had to watch at work, talking about the impact on him as a child seeing his mum being hurt by his dad, and that was a real moment of awakening for me in realising I had to get my children out of the situation. It was like he was rescuing me as an adult how I had always imagined him rescuing me as a child.

I listened to his audio book of his life recently and thought about writing him a letter, to tell him what an impact he’d had on my life, but didn’t because I felt silly and thought he’d probably never get to read it anyway. Wish I had now. 😢😢

So sad.

This is going to sound bonkers, but some time in 2005/7 my husband got on the Arriva no. 202/203 in Leeds (going to work early in the morning) and the bus driver was Patrick Stewart!

He told me about this at the time, and I looked it up online and there was something saying PS did it as a sort of hobby in his part time... but now we can't find anything and wonder if we're going mad! But we can't both have dreamt it?!??!?!?!?!?

Nothing exciting happened, PS just smiled and gave DH the ticket.

Just wondering if anyone can shed any light!!!

What a sad and wonderful story at the same time.

I was so glad that William Shatner’s still around to pay tribute to Sir Patrick. He was a childhood hero of mine, very noble and brave as the Captain, it seemed.

BashfulClam · 30/10/2026 03:29

I texted my brother who is the biggest sci fi geek. He said the actor who played Chekhov died this week too.

Rubyupbeat · 30/10/2026 04:12

Oh no, I loved this man, what an actor, RIP.

Philandbill · 30/10/2026 05:43

I too thought he was fantastic. My brother was in a pub in Stratford years ago - Patrick Stewart was doing an RSC run at the time- and DB was at the bar ordering a drink. A man next to him ordered too and DB knew who it was without turning to look as his voice was so distinctive. DB just looked sideways at Patrick Stewart and smiled and didn't say anything because he didn't want to hassle him. Patrick Stewart just smiled back, he must have known he'd been recognised and didn't mind. He also possibly appreciated that DB didn't bother him. I was very jealous of DB!

littleburn · 30/10/2026 06:46

Oh this is so sad. His ‘sonnet a day’ during lockdown was wonderful.

What a life and career and legacy he has left. It’s not often that celebrities dying makes me gasp aloud but this one did when it popped up. Saw him in No Man’s Land with Ian McKellen years ago and he was incredible. A real legend of the stage and screen.

Exit stage left one last time, Sir Patrick, and thank you.

Edited

I saw them in Waiting for Godot. What a double act, and you could sense the rapport between them. Powerful theatre.

Poor man, he apparently had Lewis Body ( spelling) dementia, which is particularly nasty. RIP Sir Patrick/Professor X/ Captain Picard.

Jesus that about ended me, real tears and all and I don’t usually cry. Thank you for sharing.

I agree. I wish you’d write this in a letter to his wife @Rinoachicken I’m sure it will find its way to her if you Google. This is very moving and I am so sorry you lived through it and I have such respect that you had the courage to leave an abusive marriage, as PS woukd have been

Bless them, that is the original ST theme, not TNG.
