Thank you all for your thoughts on conversation while chronically ill.

@MewithME I envy you having a job that gets you out and about gives you something to talk about - what field do you work in? Sorry if you've already mentioned this elsewhere and I've missed it. And don't share obviously if you feel you'd rather not or if it's too specific. I totally agree about the energy needed to have a partner - I had to give up working (very part time) when I met mine so I'd have enough energy to interact with him. To be fair there were other reasons as to why I couldn't keep going too but that was a big part of it although I know I'm lucky to have him. I'd love to have a bit of work too but it probably won't happen.

@TeaAndStrumpets - how lovely to have been with your DH since you were teens - you must be well matched to be able to chat away like that! DP doesn't have many hobbies except cycling and the very occasional trip away to see his brother and cousin, so doesn't generate much material on that front. He's also not much of a reader except about politics and will only occasionally read a book if it really interests him. I'd love to talk about history with him (really enjoying the recent spate of Tudor threads) but I don't think he's all that into it. And I'd love to have a joint project but not sure what. I was thinking of making a list of all the lovely restaurants in our nearest big city and we could work our way through them (very slowly as we're not swimming in money) but I don't know if he'd engage much with that - he'd be happy to eat at them though. I'm so limited it's hard to find anything we're both interested in and capable of!

@Oioiqueen that sounds great doing Scouts and being involved with the school - children generate so many funny and interesting stories and I'm sad to miss out on that but I wouldn't have the energy to volunteer with people of any kind, let alone high energy people, as most under the age of 12 seem to be! We have a few kids in our extended families though which is nice - we like getting the photos even if we don't see much of them as they all live miles away.

@TodayIsabetterone that sounds like a lovely life (apart from the chronic illness obviously) - how nice to have a rescue dog! DP does almost all the cleaning in our house as I can't do much so we'd only be able to get a pet if he were happy to clean up after it which I don't think he is sadly. I grew up with cats and I miss having them, although it wasn't me who cleaned up after them either!

How is everyone today?

I forced myself out to a little Halloween trail thing with DS which was nice but I am pushing it. I could have done with resting more. We got back a bit earlier so I've been resting since. I'm in bed watching Twilight! Wanted something spooky but not stressful, and I've never seen it.

It's been a beautiful autumn day and DS is happy so I guess we're ok. Bit of a hard week in many ways so been good to try and do something nice.

Any of you doing Halloween things? There were some cute little kids dressed up today which was nice. I like cute spooky not gory stuff!

@capamapadapa I don't think anyone should envy me. The grass is greener as they say. I'm a single parent with a very difficult ex, and no support. I must work so I keep going. It would be good to reduce my hours but I can't right now. My pension will be rubbish as it is.

The job is good is some ways and very stressful and challenging in others. Some colleagues are pretty crappy and selfish. Between parenting and working there's no energy left for much else.

I don't usually say exactly what I do as I don't want to be identifiable really, just in case. I find it hard reconciling ambition and not being able to progress or realise the things I wanted to achieve in my career. It's so frustrating.

I doubt I will ever have a relationship again now , but I am sort of ok about it.

That all sounds quite negative but largely I get on with it and I'm ok enough.Just have to make the best of the life I have.

Glad that you managed the Halloween trail @MewithME Probably first year we haven’t done anything Halloweeny as we always used to at least do pumpkins. 🎃 I didn’t want to encourage trick or treaters tbh as it unsettles dippy dog!

@capamapadapa Restaurant idea sounds nice. My DH loves coffee and decided one year to try out all the coffee shops on our little towns high street! He even took photos and rated them 😂 I went to some but often just coffee out gives me PEM but it was a nice idea that I liked hearing about and got him out and about.

TeaAndStrumpets · 31/10/2026 16:53

We have the usual bowl of sweets out just in case but we rarely get any visitors.

DD2 has been taking dgd (21m) around the halloween light displays in their city centre, and she has been quite alarmed by the bats everywhere. She keeps muttering "bats OK" to herself so hopefully she's been reassured.. Last year she was adorable dressed as a little pumpkin so I'm looking forward to the photos.

DD1 always pushes the boat out - 3 boys, it will be a house of horrors 😳👻She's limbering up for Christmas, I think. Loves an extravaganza.

How lovely to have your DS and friend visiting, @TodayIsabetterone that sounds very entertaining and interesting.

@MewithME Twilight passed me by at the time but we used to watch Buffy with DD2 and loved it.

Actually @capamapadapa a culinary quest might fit the bill!
National Trust and English Heritage do events throughout the year, and it would be interesting to see what's on locally.

Our local university has guest lectures sometimes. One evening we went to a talk by Carenza Lewis of Time Team fame. Fascinating.

MewithME · 31/10/2026 17:00

@TeaAndStrumpets dgd sounds just adorable. Bats, ok. Bless her 😊

When my boy was a baby he had a little pumpkin onesie. I have some very cute photos. When it's Christmas, I have one of him in an elf onesie and it's in a snow globe. My favourite decoration 🥰

I'm the wrong age for Twilight but it's watchable nonsense.

I'm finding all the characters with white face makeup a bit silly! I never knew Anna Kendrick was in it either!

Aw the bats okay story made me smile too @TeaAndStrumpets DGD sounds an absolute delight. It really is the cutest age.

DD had a pumpkin onsie too @MewithME

As DS was a few years older and liked to go trick or treating around our street, DD was dressed up too and joined in from an early age. I particularly remember DS pushing her to the front of our little group because she was cute! 😂 I’ve also just remembered buying a little pumpkin hoodie once she was toddling which then got turned into a dog jumper for our very chilled sausage dog who didn’t care if DD dressed her up as long as she was warm and got treats. She used to waddle out to greet the trick or treaters who came knocking! I do have some great photos!

@MewithMEmy daughter got me into the Twilight books (and Harry Potter books). The Twilight books are considerably better than the films! I think Anna Kendrick is probably one of the better actors in it!
Big Buffy fans back in the day also!
Ventured out to the tip and to the local retail park for a nose, still finding out where places are now we're in County Durham. Arrived home to find DH skulking round in the dark wearing a mask and unfortunately had found the loud Halloween ghost thing which goes off on motion sensor.
Hurt my knee over a year ago moving house and managed to make it worse by jumping down out of a van during this move so amm hobbling round.

TeaAndStrumpets · 31/10/2026 19:53

That's rotten luck @Stressybetty it's so easily done when you've had an injury before.

I hope you enjoy the new area, and have much nicer neighbours this time!

Ah my home county 🥰 Lucky you. Hope you like it. Sorry about the hobbling!

How's the dogs?

Stressybetty · 31/10/2026 20:34

@MewithME We lost our little Yorkie recently which has been very hard, she was 13. Just went peacefully in her sleep bless her. Dogs are ok, still reacting to every noise from outside but hopefully will relax soon.
@TeaAndStrumpetsthank you, they do seem a lot nicer.

TeaAndStrumpets · Yesterday 09:15

Good morning all!

Hope everyone had a nice weekend.

I've been feeling very sore so I bought one of those heated cape things and had it on my neck/back for ages last night, on a very low heat. I then started to feel really faint so that obviously wasn't doing me any good! It was only on a low heat. Usually I love heat on my tummy but apparently my back can't handle it! Not enough flab to protect my innards no doubt 😄 Back to Amazon it goes.
I googled it and it is a known thing, to do with the circulatory system and the vagus nerve. You live and learn

Have a good week everyone!

TodayIsabetterone · Yesterday 09:31

Morning all, I had a really lovely weekend with my son and his friends visiting. Lots of fun and laughter while they regaled us with tales of their Europe trip!
I was very tired wirh all the chatting, extra noise etc but just kept disappearing to rest and that seems to have done the trick as fingers crossed I don’t feel too bad today.
Dippy dog stayed with my MIL as we knew she wouldn’t cope too well with 3 extra people. She apparently was perfectly fine snuggled up on grandmas knee but after a glorious welcome she has studiously avoided my knee since getting home, preferring DH so I think she’s sulking 😂

Thats frustrating for you @TeaAndStrumpets Ive looked at those capes too and wondering about them as I so use a heat bag on my neck/ shoulder often. Sorry it didn’t help.

So sorry to hear about your little yorkie @Stressybetty They really leave such a big hole in our lives.

TeaAndStrumpets · Yesterday 09:49

It's so nice to have visitors from the outside world @TodayIsabetterone ! This such a lonely illness and extra human contact is a real treat.

Your little dog must have had a lovely time! At the weekend dgs3 had a sleepover, 5 young teens all sleeping in the one room, the Jack Russell snuggled in with them, it was a real treat for him. They got up early and went for a walk round the local reservoir. After they'd all gone the dog flopped into his bed and slept all day!

Swanhilde · Yesterday 11:32

Quiet weekend here, with lots of rest. I am continuing with resting today but I'm venturing out early evening to go to a talk at a local community arts centre 🎨

Hopefully it won't be too much. Even though it's not far away, I've decided to get an Uber instead of driving and worrying about parking 🚕

And then it's back to work tomorrow ...

Have a peaceful day all 💕

TodayIsabetterone · Yesterday 12:03

Visitors from the outside world is a perfectly apt description @TeaAndStrumpets They were really lovely lads had lots of funny anecdotes about their adventures which were lovely to hear.

Aww your little grand dog sounds like he had a lovely time too.

Enjoy the talk later @Swanhilde and an uber sounds like a great way to conserve a little energy.

martha79 · Today 12:32

Hello all, hope you're doing OK. Grim few days here - some combination of getting the covid jab, the clock change and general wintery feeling. But perked up a bit today. I thought you'd appreciate the exciting news that my colleague had an Ocado delivery this morning and got a PERCY PIG VAN!

TodayIsabetterone · Today 13:25

Woah… Percy pig van?!! That would literally make my week 😂
Sorry youve been feeling a bit rough @martha79 but glad today is easier.

Ive had a busy morning. Local hospital for a shoulder x ray which was nice and quick. Then we had coffee out on the way home as I was up, dressed and out already! I then got home feeling okay so got out my calendar and booked in all the appointments I’ve had to cancel this year as not well enough to manage and have been putting off remaking like dental hygienist, opticians etc.. So I’m feeling quite accomplished that I’ve at least booked them in! Biting the bullet and going to the hairdressers later l this week for probably the first time in a year! It’s much needed!
Now I’ve worn myself out so time for a rest under the heated blanket. Dippy dog is delighted I’ve switched it on and is already in situ 😀

Have a peaceful day all

TeaAndStrumpets · Today 13:54

Lovely to see you back @martha79 sorry you've been feeling grotty. I
am jealous Waitrose don't jazz up their vans so there's nothing to spot!

@TodayIsabetterone wow that is very organised! I am waiting neck scan etc so will be glad to get that over. Not that they can do much if it's a trapped nerve but it would be nice to get a proper diagnosis. Every so often I get a numb hand, foot or face so there's plenty to alarm me!

We have constant bonfires at the back of our house from the builders, they have a bonfire every day which the neighbours are unhappy about. The first day they called the fire brigade! There is still a huge pile of logs and they've just turned up with a trailer full of privet. Hope it burns away fast! Luckily not our land any more.
