Where is your tumble dryer (if you have one)? Exciting thread of the day warning!

Just that really. We currently have a vented one in the garage but the garage is at the bottom of the garden and it's a pain in the arse (usually use the dryer because the weather is bad so don't want to be trekking backwards and forwards). Vented dryer was a second hand one off FB marketplace several years ago and it is no longer working as it should - needs a few goes to get things dry - so I'm considering a new one. I'd like a condenser in the house but we are a bit tight on space. There is a corner in the kitchen that might just do it but I'm not sure if it will look a bit weird.

Utility room in the garage

QueenStevie · 25/10/2026 09:26

Right, I have bitten the bullet and ordered a new heat pump dryer - it's coming on Wednesday and it is going in the corner of the kitchen. I am excited!

On my landing outside my bathroom door. An absolute fire risk as I'd need to get past it if it burst into flames so only have it on when I'm downstairs. I couldn't fit both a dishwasher and a dryer in my small kitchen, and, quite frankly, I'd keep the dryer in my bedroom if needed, to avoid wet clothes drying around the house.

In the utility room above the washing machine

The conservatory. Even though we have a utility room.

irs bee used a handful of times in the last 10 years

MistyMountainTop · 25/10/2026 13:31

We used to have ours in our bedroom as we had plenty of room there - it warmed the room up nicely!

Mine sits atop the washing machine in my very small utility room. It's a condenser so I have to empty the drawer of water each time but it's no problem as there's a sink right next to it. It would have been easy to use the drainage kit that came with it, so the water would have drained down into the waste under the sink but no: despite me sending the You Tube link to the plumber it didn't happen.

I am wondering how well these machines work in out houses/shed/garages etc. Doesn't the cold or damp affect how they function?

My condenser tumble dryer is in the garage. It works perfectly well there. When it breaks down I will have to get a heat pump one. The heat pump may have problems in the garage in winter as they are not designed to work at low temperatures. I will have to heat the garage which to me just isn’t being very green.

Cor, gorgeous kitchen 😍 👌 or is that a posh utility room?

BertieBotts · 25/10/2026 19:12

In the bathroom 🇪🇺

DemonsandMosquitoes · 25/10/2026 19:29

In the garage. Never used. Well maybe once or twice a year.

I’m very jealous of a friend who had two spare upstairs bedrooms and converted one into a utility room with sink, washer and dryer. No traipsing up and down stairs with clothes and towels and sheets which all live and get used upstairs anyway!!

But I could not imagine using the tumble dryer in the summer when you can hang clothes out to dry and the sun will remove some stains and make your whites extra white.

Crispynoodle · 25/10/2026 23:38

In the utility room which is in the second half of the garage! We call it the futility room!

Wetblanket78 · 25/10/2026 23:59

A little space in the lobby just as we come in the front door. I have it plugged into an extension lead plugged into the kitchen. The kitchen door is right next to it so there's no wire to trip over.

I do love hanging washing out in the spring and summer.

Dryer has been delivered this morning. It is in its new space. It is doing its first load. I await the results!

Stacked on top of the washing machine in the utility room hidden away! The utility room was a priority when we designed our extension, love having everything hidden away.

Same, we had the same work surface in the utility room as in the kitchen, popped a metre by the sink in there and the condenser dryer on top. The benefit of a condenser is that you can put it anywhere you have a socket. I’d just say ensure you vent really well, as our buyers’ survey brought up a damp reading on the floor which a specialist attributed to the humidity of the combined machines in a not very big room.

Currently, the dryer is next to the washing machine in our new utility room which is much bigger than the last one.

QueenStevie · 28/10/2026 18:12

Well, it's coped well with four loads today! We just have to put it all away now. Shame there isn't a machine for that...

Mine is a condenser and it's in my attached garage with the washer which is brilliant!

I used to have a condenser in the kitchen, it was really good and they are quite quiet. Just having the convenience is worth the disturbance.
