Where is your tumble dryer (if you have one)? Exciting thread of the day warning!

Just that really. We currently have a vented one in the garage but the garage is at the bottom of the garden and it's a pain in the arse (usually use the dryer because the weather is bad so don't want to be trekking backwards and forwards). Vented dryer was a second hand one off FB marketplace several years ago and it is no longer working as it should - needs a few goes to get things dry - so I'm considering a new one. I'd like a condenser in the house but we are a bit tight on space. There is a corner in the kitchen that might just do it but I'm not sure if it will look a bit weird.

Second bedroom, on top of a unit. Its a condenser so empty the water each time. Though I have cut down on using it this year, bought a new airer as reasoned if I'm running the heating anyway I may as well use that more. Rooms are kept well ventilated.

Thanks everyone! We definitely need a utility room and if we ever extend which we keep dreaming about, it will definitely involve a utility room. In our last house, we had a futility cupboard which was really useful.

In our old house I had a small one in the kitchen.
in this house, it’s in the Garage but there is a connecting door from house to Garage.
My plan, if I won the lottery, would be to make a Utility Wall in the Garage.

mondaytosunday · 24/10/2026 08:58

It’s a combo washer/dryer that was here when I bought the house. It was housed in the downstairs loo under the boiler but I enlarged an upstairs hall closet and put it in there. So much more convenient to have it where the laundry is actually produced and saves me from taking baskets of clothes up and down the stairs plus it’s much tidier- no clothes hanging around downstairs waiting to be washed or put away!

small one in a kitchen cupboard. i dont fully tumble things to dry though. i tend do do fifteen minutes and then onto an airer or radiator if they are on. so i only need the smaller size machine.

unless it’s an proper integrated one be careful putting it in a cupboard
tumble dryer are notorious fire hazard the danger is when they’ve finished the cycle the can set on fire after use dust and lint smoulders

Notellinganyone · 24/10/2026 09:01

We have a utility space in the side return area but if we didn’t have that I’d stick it in a cupboard.

Sherararara · 24/10/2026 09:02

In the laundry room upstairs next to the washer.

Thatsanotherfinemess1 · 24/10/2026 09:05

Following a safety recall we put the replacement in the shed. When it caught fire (!) and the firebrigade said they deal with several tumble driers per week we decided to go back to a line and airers... Whatever you do, don't put it under your stairs or leave it on overnight as, if it does catch fire, you need to be able to get out . In our case the replacement was a beko and, although we cleaned the filter every time we used it, the design meant some had still gone into the body of the machine, the design might be much better 6 years on?

Ilovemyshed · 24/10/2026 09:06

Utility room, now stacked on the washer to give space for a large broom cupboard and sink.

familyissues12345 · 24/10/2026 09:06

In the utility room. It’s one with a drawer that we have to empty ever time (heat pump?) and works brilliantly

Kryten1958 · 24/10/2026 09:06

Condenser type with an internal heat pump in the spare bedroom (so no venting required) It sits on wooden flooring slats laid on top of the carpet so as to prevent the machine sucking up fluff from the carpet and then breaking down.

Fieldday26 · 24/10/2026 09:07

We’ve got a heat pump one, it was in kitchen in the old house but no space in the new house so it’s in the cupboard under the stairs. I don’t love it being in there but I know if we put it in the garage I’d never get round to getting the clothes out. I make sure not to over load it and it doesn’t take too long and leave the cupboard door open when it’s on so air can circulate.

Andsoitbeganagain · 24/10/2026 09:14

Condenser in kitchen due to lack of space. Works fine. Didn't like it there at first but it's become another surface to stack crap on

EmeraldDreams73 · 24/10/2026 09:15

Mine is on top of my washing machine (well, on a strong shelf above it), in an oversized tall cupboard in the kitchen as I don't have a utility room. The machines are normal freestanding ones, there's space around them inside the cupboard but it looks neat in the corner of the kitchen. It's vented outside and works really well, but if I did it again I'd put a pull out shelf between them for a laundry basket too.

sueelleker · 24/10/2026 09:17

Mine's a condenser, and lives in the spare room. My kitchen is a small galley-style; and I have nowhere in there to put it.

Randomchat · 24/10/2026 09:18

In the garden shed. So we rarely use it because we have to go out in the rain to get to it.

sandgrown · 24/10/2026 09:19

Condenser one in the outhouse . Also have a dehumidifier but it seems to take ages to dry stuff

Mumto3kiddiewinks · 24/10/2026 09:24

Ours is in the utility room along with the fridge freezer. There is also a mini freezer that we put the kids freezer bits in. It has cupboards also but they need a big clear out 😂

OctoberUsername · 24/10/2026 09:27

It doesn’t matter if it looks weird - being at the bottom of the garden isn’t working for you and things in your home need to work for you.

Thatcannotberight · 24/10/2026 09:29

Condenser dryer in the utility room with the washing machine and a large sink. There isn't room in the kitchen unless we lost the breakfast bar.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/10/2026 09:33

Ancient one - must be 25 years old but still works fine - in a covered area outside the back door. It has just 2 settings - hot and very hot. Why on earth do modern ones need so many settings?

KatiePricesKnickers · 24/10/2026 09:35

Condenser, in the kitchen. We only use it for down jackets though, otherwise we use clothes horses.

Dontevenlookatme · 24/10/2026 09:37

Utility now. Previously in our bathroom. Don’t use it often. Only for finishing off sheets and towels really. I line dry where I can, use an indoor airer when outdoors isn’t possible and airing cupboard to finish.

Hadalifeonce · 24/10/2026 09:39

Above the washing machine in the utility. In a previous house, it was above the washing machine in the kitchen.

EverybodyLTB · 24/10/2026 09:41

Condenser in the big cupboard that used to house the water heater/tank. I’ve got some hooks and rails etc in there so I use the residual heat from the dryer to dry other bits as well. I couldn’t stand not having a dryer, I feel like it’s my one environmentally unfriendly treat to myself.
