Where is your tumble dryer (if you have one)? Exciting thread of the day warning!

Just that really. We currently have a vented one in the garage but the garage is at the bottom of the garden and it's a pain in the arse (usually use the dryer because the weather is bad so don't want to be trekking backwards and forwards). Vented dryer was a second hand one off FB marketplace several years ago and it is no longer working as it should - needs a few goes to get things dry - so I'm considering a new one. I'd like a condenser in the house but we are a bit tight on space. There is a corner in the kitchen that might just do it but I'm not sure if it will look a bit weird.

Ours in in our downstairs shower/utility room, in a cupboard, on top of the washing machine. This room is a small extension we had built 5 years ago so when we had it done we put in a vent for the tumble dryer. Since then we have changed the tumble dryer from vented to heat pump.

It works well for us, but even with the dryer in a cupboard behind 2 doors we are aware when it's on, so I wouldn't say that modern tumble dryers are quiet.

If it’s taking several days for your tumble dryer to dry clothes you probably just need to reset the thermostat, it’s a really easy fix, unscrew the back and there’ll be a little button (there’s videos on YouTube). Dryers are quite long lasting!

ExperiencedTeacher · 24/10/2026 09:44

Utility room, not plumbed in. We actually had a discussion yesterday that when this one goes (on its last legs) we’ll replace with a vented one in the (integral) garage.

Timenowforanamechange · 24/10/2026 09:47

My Bosch vented had died. And got a Bosch heat pump. Useless. My house now resembles a Chinese laundry. I suspect these will become like the diesel cars, people were gaslit into buying. It was fine in the summer. I’m not looking forward to the winter.

Cheersmedears123 · 24/10/2026 09:49

Ours is in the kitchen as there’s nowhere else it could go. I’m jealous of all these utility rooms! None of our appliances are integrated so it doesn’t look out of place, although I don’t really see an issue with appliances being on show in the kitchen. It’s where they belong in my book.

TheChosenTwo · 24/10/2026 09:52

Stacked on top of the washing machine in the utility room hidden away! The utility room was a priority when we designed our extension, love having everything hidden away.

Ancient one - must be 25 years old but still works fine - in a covered area outside the back door. It has just 2 settings - hot and very hot. Why on earth do modern ones need so many settings?

I do agree with your observation on the settings, our newish one has a mental amount of choices - you have one job, just dry my clothes ffs 😂

TwentyDunhill · 24/10/2026 09:54

In my bathroom on top of the washing machine, temporary house and a weird layout lol. I just got it back today after months of using my mums 40 minutes away and I am so excited

TwoBlueFish · 24/10/2026 09:55

Condenser one in the garage. Used rarely as we either line dry or have an airer and dehumidified in the spare room. We have an EV tariff now so have been using it a little more overnight when our rate is much cheaper.

id love to bring ours inside but we don’t have space. Have been considering a washer/dryer but they used to be rubbish and I’m not sure if they’ve improved.

Oh and mine is nearly 20 years old.

lucysmam · 24/10/2026 09:55

In the conservatory, next to the window so the massive hose can go outside.

gravitarse · 24/10/2026 09:56

Garage, because it's noisy and ugly

swaninbay · 24/10/2026 09:56

Heat pump drier in garage, which is connected to house through a door. However if putting similar in outside space, yes it will mostly work in winter, but you need one where the heat pump thing can be removed and rinsed out under a tap as it gets smelly and musty if not completely dried during a run.

Danikm151 · 24/10/2026 09:58

Mine is in the kitchen. Condenser. Really easy to transfer clothes from machine to dryer. Clothes airer is in there too.

tiny house so only place for it!

Rightsraptor · 24/10/2026 10:04

Mine sits atop the washing machine in my very small utility room. It's a condenser so I have to empty the drawer of water each time but it's no problem as there's a sink right next to it. It would have been easy to use the drainage kit that came with it, so the water would have drained down into the waste under the sink but no: despite me sending the You Tube link to the plumber it didn't happen.

I am wondering how well these machines work in out houses/shed/garages etc. Doesn't the cold or damp affect how they function?

DancingFerret · 24/10/2026 10:06

In the garage (vented) because it's the least used of our appliances.

tinyspiny · 24/10/2026 10:06

Ours is at the bottom end of our kitchen fitted under the wall end of the peninsula , it’s a Bosch condenser , very quiet , not plumbed in so needs emptying .

MagnoliaParks · 24/10/2026 10:07

In the upstairs en suite, stacked in top of the washing machine.

The en suite is to a room where all our wardrobes and drawers are so it’s sensible that dirty/clean laundry just moves between those two rooms rather than traipsing it around the house.

I'd say that about every appliance. How many washing machine and dishwasher settings do I use? About 2.

Never had a tumble dryer until we created a utility room out of an internal cupboard. Now we have one, fully plumbed in, right next to our washing machine, and it is a thing of wonder.

vicryl4 · 24/10/2026 10:16

Condenser one in the garage which isn't far from the kitchen door.

user293948849167 · 24/10/2026 10:19

Utility room, it’s a heat pump one plumbed in so very handy. Used to have vented in the utility room.
Have had a washer/dryer in previous homes but they’re not half as good, would take a proper dryer in the shed over that.
Some people have them in the bathroom in a cupboard, could you do that?
Or have it on top of the washing machine?
The thing with heat pump ones though is that they don’t work as well in cold rooms so they’re not great in outbuildings in winter.

TicTac80 · 24/10/2026 10:28

I have a vented one in the shed (house is TINY!) :) I don't use it all the time. We have a DriBuddi thing in my room too. We also have clothes horses. On dry weather days, I'll hang stuff on the line outside (and maybe finish the laundry off in the tumble dryer). If wet weather, I'll use the DriBuddy or the tumble dryer.

finchpar · 24/10/2026 10:29

Garage here

LondonPapa · 24/10/2026 10:30

My dryer is with my washing machine, in the dedicated laundry room. I also have dehumidifiers to assist in air drying.

BasilParsley · 24/10/2026 10:33

Utility room, on top of the washing machine by the back door. The vent goes out through the cat flap!
