Where is your tumble dryer (if you have one)? Exciting thread of the day warning!

Just that really. We currently have a vented one in the garage but the garage is at the bottom of the garden and it's a pain in the arse (usually use the dryer because the weather is bad so don't want to be trekking backwards and forwards). Vented dryer was a second hand one off FB marketplace several years ago and it is no longer working as it should - needs a few goes to get things dry - so I'm considering a new one. I'd like a condenser in the house but we are a bit tight on space. There is a corner in the kitchen that might just do it but I'm not sure if it will look a bit weird.

Get a heat pump dryer-so much cheaper to run.

Bryonyberries · 24/10/2026 10:52

In the kitchen next to the washing machine. Full size non vented type.

Through the years I have had mini ones that have fitted into cupboards if I’ve had kitchens too small.

I don’t have a dishwasher though, if we got one we’d have to relocate the tumble dryer.

I'd say that about every appliance. How many washing machine and dishwasher settings do I use? About 2.

A BiL has 2 tumble dryers at his huge place in France with a laundry room - so I have amused myself by trying to translate all the umpteen TDryer settings. Pret a repasser, Pret a ranger, are just two I remember - ready to iron or IIRC to fold. Goodness knows what all the others are - I only ever use the ‘ready to fold’ one.

One thing I do like about them, however - they’re condensers, so it’s somehow satisfying to take the drawer thingy out and tip all the water away. Though in times of drought I have been known to tip it into plant pots instead.

Loobylu66 · 24/10/2026 10:57

Kitchen, its a condenser dryer so no annoying pipe to hang out the window.

RaraRachael · 24/10/2026 11:06

Mine is in the utility area next to the washing machine.
I used to have one in the garage when I had a tiny kitchen but it was a PITA traipsing out there

Do they take ages to dry stuff? I have heard mixed things about them.

We have a washer/dryer in the futility. It dries well but is expensive, so we mostly use the dryer in the garage. Fortunately, the garage door is near the back door, so not too bad to get to in poor weather.

PDAblues · 24/10/2026 11:14

In the downstairs bathroom (toilet). Same in pur old house.

Shallysally · 24/10/2026 11:24

I have a washer/drier combined due to space in kitchen. I never put it on a wash to dry cycle though as don’t dry everything in the drier.

Becs258 · 24/10/2026 11:28

In the porch. Previous owners had a hole cut in the wall for the vent pipe.

Enigma54 · 24/10/2026 12:35

In the room which currently houses my two house bunnies!

TeenLifeMum · 24/10/2026 12:37

Utility room. Space and hole for vented but ended up with a condenser - I can’t quite remember why as it was years ago but cost would have been a factor and reviews plus running cost.

Scarlettpixie · 24/10/2026 13:04

I have mine in the upstairs utility room (was bed 4). It’s great as when drying indoors everything is on one level.

Zanatdy · 24/10/2026 13:07

Washer / dryer in kitchen but don’t use dryer part too much. Only recently got it, not had one for decades.

Mine is on top of my washing machine (well, on a strong shelf above it), in an oversized tall cupboard in the kitchen as I don't have a utility room. The machines are normal freestanding ones, there's space around them inside the cupboard but it looks neat in the corner of the kitchen. It's vented outside and works really well, but if I did it again I'd put a pull out shelf between them for a laundry basket too.

How tall are you? Mine are also stacked with a shelf in between in a tall cupboard in the utility and, while I like the idea, I think I'd have to stand on a step stool to reach the dryer if I put a space between them.

Do they take ages to dry stuff? I have heard mixed things about them.

I have a Miele heat pump (plumbed in) and it's brilliant - just over an hour for a full load.

PocketSand · 24/10/2026 14:48

I downsized with my vented tumble dryer with no home. It is now in the spare room with hose out the window. When it dies I will have plumbed in stacked over washer.

Mine (AEG) is pretty good. The saving depends on whether you need to buy a new one anyway-it’s 100% worth it if you do, as an average annual cost of around £130-150 is lowered to around £40, but the extra cost to buy it would erode a lot of the savings if you were buying one just as a change. Thats what I remember from
last year, anyway.

I would say we do as ours is not efficient at all at the moment as we keep having to put it on again for each load as it isn't dry after the first time so we are probably wasting loads of money. Thanks for the info, that sounds like quite a saving.

Only if you over load them or leave the filters blocked. Mine got bad and when I read the book, there was an extra filter I didn’t know what there that was totally blocked! Works great again now.

Greenandyellowday · 24/10/2026 19:46

On the first floor, vented to outside, with washing machine in the same small cupboard-sized room. It's helpful to avoid carrying laundry down to the ground floor and back up again.

Blueuggboots · 24/10/2026 19:54

In our bathroom stacked on top of the washing machine. We’ve drilled a hole through the wall for the power leads.

BatshitIsTheExplanation · 24/10/2026 19:56

Mines in the kitchen. I bought a new one earlier today. I'm having the most exciting weekend, living the dream 😂

socks1107 · 24/10/2026 19:58

In my utility room

ToadRage · 24/10/2026 20:00

Mine is in the kitchen as is my washing machine and dishwasher. We don't have a utility room so kitchen is the only option.
