Do you think women cheat more than men?

Just having this debate with a male friend.

He thinks women cheat more. As he’s got most romantic interest and flirting from women already taken or married etc

Whereas, as a woman I think men cheat more. And often at horrific times like after a baby is born etc

OP posts:

A huge generalisation but I think if a woman is unhappy she’ll leave - a man will only leave if he has the next woman lined up

No, I don't think they have anywhere near as much opportunity in terms of free time and availability, even if they have more options.

However, when they do cheat, I think it's almost always because they're unhappy. Men are much more likely to cheat when they're perfectly happy, they just like the extra sex and think they won't get caught and nobody will be hurt.

Do men really have that much more opportunity? There's a fair number of women who presumably either work part-time, or are SAHMs with children at school, who are at a loose end during the day. The high streets and coffee shops in affluent areas are heaving with them during term time.

Are all the women married and all the men single then?

I'm pretty sure there are even more men who take off for golf, cycling and other things more or less whenever they like, and who work away more.

In my experience men cheat a lot more. And before anyone says they must be cheating with someone, often with single women often younger than them. I don't know many of my female friends who have cheated but lots of husbands. But then am middle aged and plenty of my female friends are now divorced and still single, none of their ex husband's are.

Edited

Yeah. Young single women are lining up to have sex with Dave, the 45 year old, ordinary looking, slightly overweight, slightly bald, plumber, from that new-build estate down the road.

All these cheating men. But not a single cheating wife! Must be all those young single women, who just find other women's husbands irresistible. God! The sexy beasts! Imagine all those husbands being so charismatic and gorgeous that women just can't help themselves.

Denim4ever · 19/10/2026 21:33

I suspect it's closer to 50/50 than we think.

localnotail · 19/10/2026 21:38

This is laughable. Tell me, who is more likely to fuck anyone willing - without having much feelings for them? Who, as a percentage of the population, thinks sex is something they are entitled to/ doesn't mean anything? Who, on average, is more likely to retain freedom of movement, hobbies, work, therefore more time to spend with affair partner if willing - even when having small kids?

The answer is definitely not women.

You would be surprised. My fat, balding, 53 year old builder of a husband had an affair with a 25 year old waitress. And was shagging his friend's 36 year old wife, too.

Edited - and to add insult to an injury, there was a 15 year old gap between us, with me being younger!

Luckydog7 · 19/10/2026 21:47

It's incredibly difficult to measure because any poll will be effected by the likelihood of either sex to be honest about it. One sex may be better at hiding it etc.

Saying that. There is a reason that most sex workers are female and I doubt that for a large subset of men that being in a relationship would stop them paying for sex if they are the type.

One sex is far more sexually driven then the other so may take more opportunities then the other.

767786alsk · 19/10/2026 22:00

I am mid-40s and honestly you'd be surprised how many women in their mid 30s would happily shag a bloke in his 40s. Clearly some women do cheat - I think especially when younger. However, I dont know any of my friends or wider acquaintances that are or have. But lots of people around me are getting divorced and mostly that is because of a husband's affair. the affair partner is usually single.

Well Dave might not be cheating with 21 year old bikini models (although if he's rich he has much better prospects even if he is plain and bald) but if there's one woman in the world prepared to sleep with him then there's probably a few others as well, even if they are also mid 40s and ordinary. I've often heard people say someone "wasn't the type to cheat" when what they meant was that this person wasn't conventionally drop dead gorgeous and overtly sexual. By that logic, there would be no marriages among mere mortals to cheat on in the first place!

ThinkOfABetterUsername · 19/10/2026 22:10

Women have less desire to cheat but far more opportunity and I think men are less curious about where their partners are than women so its easier for women to be away for hours at a time. So I suspect we over estimate how much men cheat and under estimate how much women cheat. But even so, men cheat far more, I think.

BUT, if it was easy to find plenty of women to cheat with and there was certainty of not getting caught the numbers would be very different. 90% of men would cheat and probably only the same small handful of women.would cheat.

Someone once said "Men are as faithful as their options." and it's true. The thing that keeps the vast majority on the straight and narrow is lack of opportunity.

We shouldn't judge. Humans are wired up.to behave in the way that maximises their surviving offspring and men and women need to behave in very different ways to achieve that.

I think that’s partly the issue. Those women are meeting other women on the school run or in yoga class or in coffee shops. Even if they wanted an affair it’ll be harder to find someone suitable.

Men also aren’t off the scene for 9 months whilst pregnant, which must affect the statistics even in a small way. ( and yes theres always exceptions to the rule but generally speaking women aren’t starting affairs when they’re pregnant)

I agree with the poster who said the level of secxual entitlement us just way higher in men.

monymonymony · 19/10/2026 22:45

Ah yes, because as history clearly shows, male prostitution has always been the highest-demand industry on the planet. 🙄

I actually think it’s more often women but that’s because quite a few female friends have confided in me over the years that they've been unfaithful. I know of 2 men who have and both ended their marriage due to OW.

Never2many · 20/10/2026 01:04

Statistically it’s equal, but tbh I think that more women cheat than men.

I I think the Difference though is that men are more likely to tell their mates. Men are less judgemental than women, and women know that if they tell their friends those friends are more likely to judge and/or distance themselves.

Personally I know far more women who have cheated than men.

It isn’t…it’s around 20% of men and 13% of women who (admit to) having cheated. But the figure narrows year on year.

CaptianMunchen · 20/10/2026 01:15

I would say OPs friend is conflating actual cheating with the ability to cheat. I’d say men are far more likely to be weak and convert an opportunity they are presented with than a woman. Women are inherently more choosy and less likely to take life altering risks.

Because of this it’s much easier to cheat if you are inclined if you are a women. I would imagine if our conferences are anything to go by you could sleep with a man married or not every time. The chaps not so much.

The only caveat to my theory is that I believe less men leave or are open about there partners afair. I know of a number of indiscretions that have been swept under the carpet. Where as the other way around they have has there cheating ass served .

Augustus40 · 20/10/2026 01:19

I think men are much more sexually charged than women in general and are more prone to straying. I expect the ratio is 70 % men 30 % women. The women these men are finding will be single ones as well as married ones.

Hipocrisyandbullshit · 20/10/2026 01:41

I think it's equal but men are more likely to get caught because they're more sloppy.

The flip side of this is that if your (ex-)boyfriend leaves and doesn’t go straight into a new relationship then he really really didn’t like being in a relationship with you. 😂 The poor sod is still single, last I heard.

Back to the topic of the thread, men and women must cheat in equal measure, broadly. Otherwise we would have to accept that swathes of single women are sleeping with married men, or are so stupid they don’t realise their sex partner has a wife and kids. The single women I know don’t fit this description in the slightest. “Baggage” of any kind is the biggest ick.
