is it just pathetic to retaliate in the same manner?

He texted you. He wished you Happy Birthday. He was thinking of you.

Why is that not enough?

I think we all need to buy a lot less stuff, including gifts for others if there is nothing that the person actually wants or needs.

Far too many people are buying gifts for the sake of it, rather than just focusing on sending good wishes - by text or call, or visiting them person.

Parent/child is not an even relationship - generally the older generation will have more money, more time and more stuff so gifts flow more in one direction.

This isnt one that we can understand if you can't give the background, Op.

Maybe it's just late, cards from our DS are invariably late, I think he remembers on the actual day and then generally goes online to somewhere like MoonPig. Very occasionally we get a card, hand written, through the post and on time but it's quite rare. We tend to just laugh about it, I don't think sending cards is a thing so much now.

Why do people give greeting cards late? It's so rude - and such terrible etiquette. They know when your birthday is, and they have a year to get a card, and can post it a week before your birthday, or bring it around when they come to see you.

As I say, it's the height of rudeness, and very poor form to send/give late birthday cards/greeting cards in general. Very poor form. I would often get my birthday card a week after my birthday from a handful of my extended family, even though I got theirs to them, 2-3 days early. I just used to throw it straight in the bin when it came to me a week after my birthday. What's the point of it then?

Also Christmas. One of my cousins gave me a Christmas card on 7th January one year. Like WTF? All my decorations were down by then. I just binned the card.

A late card is the height of rudeness? Really?

Yes. Really!

Many of that generation have given up cards to adults. Did he contact you on the day to say happy birthday?

Selfish. His mother would like a card. He could at least discuss it. To leave her with nothing is awful.
