I’m on holiday and seem to be the only one showering before using the pool

Interesting, I’ve spent quite a bit of time abroad either holiday or living and I’ve noticed here none of the other guests are using the poolside shower.
Not sure whether to be more performative to role model or question my whole understanding of why we do it 🤣

I'm from the generation that doesn't sneer and nitpick at other people's use of language, and in doing so tries to invalidate or belittle their point of view. I was born in the 70s, so God only knows what generation that makes me, but it means I've been around long enough to know the beauty of the English language are the variances, localism and evolution of words and phrases. I would have a Google at the many different words in the English language for vagina, but would hate what that would do to my search history. 🤣

Excuse me, I've got no skin in your particular argument but wanted to say I'm also born in the 70s and I am a world class sneerer and nitpicker, thank you very much.

I also refuse to rinse most of my suncream off before I get in a pool. That's when it's most needed.

I can multi task actually - ADHD can be a gift. 😊

Clearly I have touched a nerve. I genuinely don’t understand why people do it, that’s all. And I think it’s weirdly kind of intrusive. Maybe that’s my ND brain but I was hoping someone could give me some insight into what exactly is so fascinating about people getting on with their lives.

It’s interesting to read strangers - facial expressions and movements and their way of holding themselves and how they interact and dress and compose their face and react to things and the people they’re with. Every part of them is giving off messages about where they’re from and have been and their life and mood and relationships.

Sometimes it’s nice to read them and guess what they’ve been up to and imagine a life for them, sometimes it’s interesting to see people who act and react very differently from you and imagine why they’re so different. Sometimes it’s nice to see a grumpy bloke suddenly break into a beaming smile or see a toddler throw a tantrum and wonder why. Sometimes you see a young couple mooning over each other and remember your own young love. Or a mother and daughter and recall your own mother.

All of human life is fascinating. Hence why such topics as sociology, anthropology, archaeology, psychology all exist… humans have always found other humans fascinating. Or most of us anyway.

The 70s is also Gen X…1965 to 1980/1

But you can’t shower it off without soap or shower gel.

Yes you can. The soap manufacturers don’t want you to try though.

I love people on MN who claim never to take the slightest interest in what anyone else does, ever.

MN, an online chat that basically talks about others all day everyday.

Absolutely! 💯

People watch people.
People judge people.

That's life! 😉

Suntan lotions/oils wreck swimming pools. They cause a 'scumline' which bakes onto the liner/tiles, clog up the filtration system and cause a build up of bacteria in the skimmers. All preventing the water from being properly sanitised 🤢

Eh?

I'm not sure what sort of sun tan lotion you use, but mine just turns white and creamy under warm running water and would definitely need hot water and soap to remove it completely.

Thank you for explaining that, it helps clarify why people do it. I think it just makes me feel a bit uncomfortable that someone might do that to me.

Sidebeforeself · 14/10/2026 17:29

Yes you need hot water but a flannel or body scrub gets it off for me.

I wonder how the holiday companion felt when @TofuTuesday “pointed” this out and asked that she/he shower before entering the pool!

There is a world of difference between choosing to interact online and being watched at by strangers who find others endlessly fascinating.

I can choose to interact or not with posters but the idea that anyone would see me in the street and watch me for any reason or try to guess my story creeps me out.

It is hard enough dealing with people intruding on your day by trying to engage you in conversation but now it appears that even the ones who don’t do this aren’t minding their own business.

Maybe it is an ND thing but I can’t understand why people can’t just keep their minds on their own lives.

I know someone who does things like that - she always says she’s the ‘mother’ of the group 🙄
