I’m on holiday and seem to be the only one showering before using the pool

Interesting, I’ve spent quite a bit of time abroad either holiday or living and I’ve noticed here none of the other guests are using the poolside shower.
Not sure whether to be more performative to role model or question my whole understanding of why we do it 🤣

People watching is a thing. Might not be your thing, but other people do it.

Which is why I am asking why people do it? What is so fascinating? I’m genuinely baffled.

I hate the idea that going about my life is providing some kind of entertainment.

HappyViewer · 13/10/2026 17:51

Have a cocktail and then go for a wee in the pool.

Funny you should mention this but there are notices up in my club/gym/pool about showering prior to using the pool.

Apparently a quick shower washes off a lot of pool contaminating oils, grease, sweat, smegma etc.

I find it inconsiderate of sweaty-straight-off -the street or building site people who on hot days don’t shower pre swim but hey-ho it is what it is. I carry on carrying on in the deep end.

Not without soap or shower gel it doesn't.

Surely you don't expect holiday makers to have a full wash down every time they fancy a dip?

Maddy70 · 13/10/2026 17:54

I live in Spain and it's our community brakes that you shower before entering the pool and it's the same wherever I have lived it is expected no wonder the French think we are filthy

FiveEightNine · 13/10/2026 17:56

The pool side shower at holidays typically doesn't have much strength, so we would shower properly in our room before putting the swimsuit on. But we typically don't lie on the lounger for ages in it.

At the public pool people should (and in my area do) take a proper shower at the showering area, as many come after doing other stuff. Of course unless they got one at home, changed there and just dropped outer clothes in the changing room.

I love to watch the dynamics between other people. I find it fascinating. DH and I like to make up their life story, job, relationship etc. No idea if we are ever accurate but it's amusing and usually kind. We don't say horrible things. The wider the family unit with more generations, the better. God knows what other people make up about us 😆 I was looking at a hotel with a private swim up pool suite the other week and DH said, "But how will we watch the people?" And I had to agree.

PoppieCock · 13/10/2026 18:01

Another people watching fan here.

Anyone else make up names and occupations etc for the people you're watching? 😁

"That's Melony, she's a computer programmer from Grimsby. Married to a tomato farmer named Derek, who plays the tuba in his spare time"

PoppieCock · 13/10/2026 18:01

Oh, I missed your post @QueenStevie

Great minds!

Whoever you’re on holiday with - do they shower before getting in the pool?

Yes but only because I pointed out the sign and asked them to. So I’m in a minority despite the signs etc.

I always shower and so does DH. DD didn’t, but she had showered in the apartment in the morning before breakfast.

TofuTuesday · 13/10/2026 18:18

It’s not that deep, the people watching, just noticing whose around you I don’t remember them at dinner and hunt them out!

at least there’s been some evidence of shower related expectations so I’m not on my own.

I always imagined it was to wash off obvious stuff like sand, hair, globs of cream etc.

Apart from any hygiene considerations, I find that getting wet all over first helps prevent that horrid cold shock when you first get in the pool. 😨

We do this but we dont say nice things allt he time, and also make up elaborate stories that make us laugh. Convinced ourselves there were a few swinging couples, and made up some affairs, they are on the run etc. Just to amuse ourselves like. Doesnt hurt anyone, its funny.

Are your travelling companions small children?

ithinkthereforeyouarewrong · 13/10/2026 18:30

@TofuTuesdayjust out of interest how large would a body of water need to be before you would share it with a dead body?

As for it being harmless, I’m actually really uncomfortable about the idea of someone doing that. The more I think about it, the less comfortable I am about being out and about minding my own business in case people (who clearly have nothing else to do) think it’s okay to discuss me.

How boring does your companion have to be before you turn your attentions to others?

QueenStevie · 13/10/2026 18:36

DH and I have been married a long time! 😂

Doesn’t it bother you that you are potentially making people uncomfortable?

Maybe it’s because I’m ND but I don’t see it is any better than slagging off someone behind their back.

It’s a Petri dish. It wouldn’t even cross my mind to get in.

Will the next line of enquiry relate to my imposing things on adults? This was just a bit of a chat not anything deep.
as for worrying what people might be saying about you, honestly, who cares? I don’t care if a previous pp makes up that I’m a sleep starved postal worker on holiday with a friends husband - I’m not going to know.

Urgh see it’s an ick thing isn’t it. Not where I could bump into it!

I find it annoying too, especially as I remind my teens to shower before going into pool or jacuzzi.

Yes I agree if it’s in sight it’s a NO.
But it is crazy to think we all go in the sea with some very grim things floating/ buried in it.

I just wondered why you had to tell them to use the shower - I assumed adults wouldn’t need to do that.

Im so glad I don’t go on holiday - it sounds boring.
