I’m on holiday and seem to be the only one showering before using the pool

Interesting, I’ve spent quite a bit of time abroad either holiday or living and I’ve noticed here none of the other guests are using the poolside shower.
Not sure whether to be more performative to role model or question my whole understanding of why we do it 🤣

People watching is a thing. Might not be your thing, but other people do it.

Watching is fine. Judging and then talking about ‘role modelling’ to other holidaymakers not so much.

Ok so as ever, some people are deliberately not taking this in the mildly interested and obviously light hearted way intended - have a lovely day people.

I've never showered before swimming.

A pool is just for sitting around under a brolly, sipping cocktails and reading and snoozing.

I don't understand how anyone could be bothered showering before, swimming in god knows what, and showering and hair washing, conditioning and creaming up after. I'm exhausted even thinking about all the non essential work involved in that!

So I don't bother with pool areas at all, but I must have a small terrace/large balcony off my room. That's non negotiable. I can watch the pool masochists from there without having to vie for a sunbed at 4am or whatever time is necessary to bag a bed.

I mean why???? What is the attraction!

EmbracingUncertainty · 13/10/2026 19:52

maybe they need a visit to Denmark, I felt quite shamed about my British quick rinse in the shower before a swim at a water park - the norm there is to have a full naked wash before getting your cossie on…

CheerfulBunny · 13/10/2026 19:55

Well, that escalated quickly..
I'm with you, OP. I quickly shower before getting in pools. I read something years ago about how it's taboo not to in other countries and how in Sweden (?) they have instruction signs up warning about the old man with a dirty bottom 😳 or something. Made me look at things in a different way.

And again with the people watching… you know you can do that just as easily at home if you really feel the need to, right?

YourAmberExpert · 13/10/2026 19:57

People are completely grim, see also men wearing pants under their swim shorts.

That whole naked wash before you get a cossie on and get into the public baths was enough to put me off going to the public baths in Reykjavik. I'll keep my naked butt to myself!

I wonder if the friend will start a thread about @TofuTuesday ordering her to shower before she gets in to the hotel pool!!

Oh I missed that.

Anarchy99 · 14/10/2026 07:41

Never as an adult, either in the UK or ahroad.

Obviously I am missing out on the chance to have things ‘modelled’ to me

Boxfulloftoys · 14/10/2026 07:54

PoppieCock · 13/10/2026 17:27

I don't think I've ever showered before I've got in the pool.

It's a bit pointless anyway unless you use soap or shower gel, surely?

The water's just going to make your suntan cream go weird and sludgy.

It's the sun cream that blocks the filters in the pool.

When I’m on holiday - I don’t give a hoot what others are doing or not doing or judging me or not judging me. I’m enjoying myself too much.

Never done this in my life. Blush Are you meant to??? Shock

I love people on MN who claim never to take the slightest interest in what anyone else does, ever.

MN, an online chat that basically talks about others all day everyday.

LOL so true!

LondonLass2026 · 14/10/2026 08:03

My partner (from the north) would call you a nebby parker. ie mind your own business! What's it got to do with you?

The pool is going to have all sorts of filth in it whether or not you personally shower first.

"Role model" 🤣

notnorman · 14/10/2026 09:06

Maddy70 · 13/10/2026 17:54

I live in Spain and it's our community brakes that you shower before entering the pool and it's the same wherever I have lived it is expected no wonder the French think we are filthy

Same- it’s really enforced too! Good I say!!!

Yes, sun cream blocks the filters and anything with a colour discolours the tile grouting
