Anyone else hate their neighbours?

I’m just having a little rant. I hate my neighbours so much. They live as though they are in a detached house rather than a flat in a densely packed building. They ripped out the carpets and put wooden floors in without any consideration for noise. They stomp around with shoes indoors on said wooden floors. They get aggressive if anyone dares to complain and smoke cannabis which makes the building stink.

The building mangers are useless. They don’t do anything other than issue notices to all of the flats about antisocial behaviour but then do nothing about it.

Fortunately I am moving very soon. But I feel sorry for the next tenants. I was always puzzled when I first moved into this flat as to why the previous tenants had moved after only a few months. Now I know why.

WIBU to leave a parting note to the neighbours telling them how awful they are?

We almost moved due to our next door neighbours.

When we first moved in they were the only neighbours to come to our door with a gift and made us feel welcome but the reality was that they were highly inconsiderate, making noise at all hours.

They were tenants, yet seemed to do constant DIY, quite often banging and drilling from 10pm, even during the week.

They would have loud parties, yelling into microphones until the early hours. I did speak to them a number of times and they'd apologise but carry on.

It made me and DH paranoid to the point where if we saw them getting into their car, we'd check to see whether the way they were dressed made it look like they were out for the day/night; if they came back with shopping, we'd watch them unload to see whether they'd bought barbecue food.

I know that sounds like we're mad but they drove us to it. Honestly, unless you've been in that situation it's hard to describe without making us look like a pair of curtain-twitching nutcases but that's hiw they made us feel and the worst part was the not knowing when the next racket was going to start.

It was a couple and their teenage daughter but oddly enough, they were quite nice people, especially the daughter but they just lived very selfish, inconsiderate lives.

It really affected our mental health in a way I never thought possible, then suddenly last spring, they moved. The house was left empty for 6 months while the landlord updated the property and we were worried sick about who might move in but were so so relieved when a young couple (who have since had a baby) moved in and they are ideal neighbours...what a relief!

Don't underestimate the way bad neighbours can affect you.

I have also turned in to a curtain twitcher, trying to figure out if my awful neighbours will be back soon, or if the car I can hear is them coming back.

the noise they generate is insane and even when they are out I can’t relax as I’m waiting for them to come back again

maxslice · 13/10/2026 22:02

Yes, you would be unreasonable. Let the new people make their own assessments about the neighbours. For all you know, they may also smoke, like hardwood floors, have a parrot who curses loudly all night long, or practice the bagpipes first thing in the morning.

Either way, it won’t be your problem anymore.

My neighbour has a St George's flag hanging from a pole outside his front garden. I'm tempted to sneak out at night and cut it down but I think he's a tradesperson so I'm afraid he'll attack me if he found out it was me.

Wow fancy being triggered by a flag .

I absolutely effing hate mine.
Tracey next door has a gob like a fucking fog horn.
She shouts at her husband alot. She goes off on huge rants at him. Usually it involves something to do with her wanting a Chinese take away, but he wont get one so she screams and shouts and bangs doors. The rants sometimes last 2 hours and tgen re start after an hour of silence. Today she had 30 minute rant mid morning something to do with her husbands "effing shed". She calls him a fat bastard and skinny cunt in the same sentence. She's an absolute delight.

When she's not shouting at her husband she is very loudly performance grand-parenting. Its honestly like a full blown kids party every single day between 3pm ish and 7pm. Full blown nursery rhymes, her screaming and shouting and whooping at the kids. Not in an abusive way, but animated, like is normal when playing with little kids except....she is at full shouting volume.

Apparently she is a retired teacher, but she does a fine job of manically and I mean in a manic way, winding up the poor kids to the point they get over stimulated and have a tantrum. It ends in tears EVERY day.

Imagine someone shouting at top volume Look at the fire engine, look at the fire engine really fast 20 times then shouting NeeNaw nee naw nee naw for about 2 whole minutes then shouting look look look. Its absolutely hell.

I work from home and ive become famous in my company for my nextdoor neighbour because its so loud it can be heard on a Teams meeting.

And then when him nextdoor isn't being shouted at, he does fucking continuous DIY. Drilling, hammering and using any fucking power tool he can get his hands on.

I HATE them!!!

The first 18 months i lived here, I had a young family with 2 under 5s nextdoor. Never had an issue.

It's not a 'flag' its a hate symbol. The guy is a builder and constantly wears football shirts when he's out and about and in his garden. I seriously doubt he's just into vexilology.

A hate symbol toward what or whom? Saints? Dragons?

SoThatsTheWayItIs · 13/10/2026 22:12

We're detached and only have one immediate neighbour but because of the way the houses are positioned rarely see them. It's bliss and the main reason I chose the house. The house itself is a complete fucking money pit and has given me nothing but trouble since day one but other than the canadian geese that reside in the area behind us we get very little noise. I would rather live in peace in my half renovated arsehole of a house than tolerate dickhead neighbours.

disgracefullyyours · 13/10/2026 22:13

I’ve been there and it’s one reason why, now I’m almost ready to buy my first property, I would never buy a flat and don’t recommend anyone else does, unless they’re desperate.

Not a silly question, but how do you know the dogs are stoned?? How would dogs become high??

Sometimes, people think it’s funny to blow cannabis smoke into their dog or cat’s face. A former boyfriend had a flatmate that did it. I think it’s cruel.

Cannot stand my awful neighbour honestly she thinks she owns the damn street. She has a daughter who also lives a few doors up. Always full of drama the amount of arguments we've heard over the years is ridiculous and it's always from either the horrible cow next door or from her daughter and her boyfriend. Shouting and screaming at one another all the time. The one next door has bashed on my door countless times saying my kids are noisy and she's sick of it yet her and her adult daughter cause more chaos and noise than any of my kids playing. She's threatened to smash my face in more times than I care to remember, I've filed a few police reports on her for harassment. She's filmed my partner outside my house. She even tried to tell me that her rough gypsy cousin was in her house waiting for the nod to come out and batter me cos my kids were apparently waking up her kids, she said to me look my cousins looking out my window waiting to come out-there was nobody up her window at all, the woman is unhinged. My daughter who was 18 at the time only popped to the shop on the street with her boyfriend and she came out ranting and raving at her threatening to batter her calling her a dirty slag and telling her boyfriend that she's a dirty little cheater who brings loads of different lads to my house(she didn't the woman was just out for trouble) she told my daughter go on you little slag tell your mum too cos I'll splatter her across the street too. She harasses everyone. She harassed a girl in the shop last year who lives across the road calling her a tramp and telling her go on move out the street cos no one fucking wants you here. I hear her outside talking to people about me and my kids she says I hate her next door I'm gonna get her kicked out cos don't want her next door to me we're good people and don't want riffraff. This coming from a woman in her late 50s and I've heard her arguments she's had cars full of people come after her to the point she's shouting in to her husband to go get the gun cos people are coming after them!!! Her latest was her banging on my door two weeks ago at 9.30pm again threatening to smash my face in and saying she apparently has months and months of video footage of my adult daughter and her boyfriend who don't even live with me outside my house til 5am keeping them awake and that she's calling the police on me for noise disturbance I told her go ahead. Her granddaughter who lives with her goes to school with my 10year old and has been bullying my daughter to the point she's saying stuff to her like I'm gonna get my nan to come batter your mum. Obviously reported the bullying to school. The neighbour even said oh I know you've gone to the school about my granddaughter bullying your kid too you grassing fucking bitch. She said something to my eldest as she was here visiting and my daughter said she's not done anything she said get out here I'll smash your fucking face in too my daughter said to her what did I do she said giving me fucking lip just. It's ridiculous. We're trying to move. Police have now issued her with community protection notices but I can imagine she will breach them at some point because she's so unhinged and thinks it's ok to bully anyone who doesn't agree with her

Sounds like you live in the area where they film benefits street or shameless!!! Id move rather than live next to what Sounds like real lowlives

Thats bloody awful 😖

It is. Also pets can become high through hotboxing, same as people (including children). Basically sitting in a small unventilated room filled with people smoking weed can get you passively high. Its cruel when it's an animal or child that has no choice or control in the matter even if it's through carelessness rather than intent.

Fuckmyliferightnow · 13/10/2026 23:30

I had a neighbour who would have parties until 7am and they would all bang on the joining wall. All because I asked her to stop banging in the middle of the night.
She would go to the pub and tell people there was a party after closing hours at my address, I would get drunk men ringing my doorbell, very late.
They posted cheesecake through my letter box and smeared butter all over my front window whilst I was away one summer.
They put my wheelie bin up again my door handle so I couldn’t get out and threw glass bottles into my back garden, my son was only 4 and loved playing in the garden.
I logged it all and sent it to the Housing Association, who did sweet fuck all.
I became suicidal and even wrote a letter pleading for them to stop, it didn’t stop, I had to move.
It all sounds over the top, but I honestly had to put up with this for 5 years.
She used to grin at me if I passed her on the street.

TheCoolHare · 13/10/2026 23:41

For all the talk of nextdoor neighbours, it can be those nearby that can cause issues.

There’s a family on our road that are evidently drug dealers and cover it by owning the next door house as a rental. The sons don’t work and spend their days pissing about in fast cars driving up and down the 20mph road for no reason at 50mph. The main issue is who it attracts on what is normally quiet residential street with their like minded customers driving at ridiculous speeds up and down the road at all hours.

I’m sure because they are such low level weed dealers the police don’t intervene. It doesn’t make them any easier to cope with.

Frustratingly it’s not just those adjacent or over the road from you that can cause the bother.

West midlands yes. She's a bloody nightmare. Her daughter and son in law are junkies(son in law also sells drugs) the daughters two kids live with her cos school reported to social and kids are with the nan(my not so delightful neighbour) she does all this mouthing off in front of those grandkids too-seems they're no better off there than they were with their parents a few doors down. Poor kids think that these behaviours are normal. The street constantly stinks of weed and it's not difficult to know where it's coming from as the daughter and her 18year old that social didn't remove from her are forever going about with a spliff in hand and high on goodness knows what else. Actually can't believe this neighbour is in her late 50s with adult grandkids the way she goes on she's like an overgrown antisocial teenager. It's like she thrives on drama. Even her husband has been heard telling her to shut up and get back in. My daughter had a few friends over for her 15th birthday 5 years ago early evening around 6pm they put some music on whilst sat in the garden she came out raging saying they couldn't be playing music at that time and had a shovel in hand threatening to cut heads off if they didn't turn it off(it wasn't even loud and even her own teen granddaughter said dunno what nans problem is it's a bit of music not even loud or at an unreasonable time) she told me get your kids mates out of your house before my family come after em else they're having you too. It's taken far too long for police to take her harassment and threatening behaviours somewhat seriously. She's on a community protection warning so far which was only issued days ago. Cannot wait to find somewhere to live away from her and her shitty family

Had an awful neighbour. I mean really awful. Moved into a care home a few years ago and since died. House up for sale, so run down it won’t sell. The longer it stays empty the better in my opinion.

I had a neighbour who was an alcoholic and an addict. It was truly horrible. Awful noises through the wall at all hours, especially really violent vomitting. Shouting. Banging things. When you hear things through a wall but cant actually see what is going on it is genuinely frightening. And a terrible smell of weed in the corridor.. He was initially some kind of executive and I gradually watched him go downhill. It was incredobly stressful having to live next door to him. I was so so relieved the day I moved.

I’d just leave and not even bother as it sounds like they are very selfish and won’t care!

Some of these stories are awful - so many inconsiderate and obnoxious people around 🙁I wouldn't leave a note in case it makes things worse for his wife and daughter. I understand the temptation though. Nothing worse than bad neighbours.

sandgrown · Yesterday 07:41

I live in a cul de sac and the house at the entrance flies a St George’s flag . I don’t like it as I feel it makes us look like a racist street. Two of my neighbours are in a relationship and have children but live opposite each other . They do it to commit benefit fraud I guess . They used to have gatherings in the street with another group of neighbours and a family of pleasant but permanently stoned weed smokers from further down the street. They all had decent sized gardens so never understood the gatherings in the street. On bonfire night they had huge fireworks in the street . While they were never unpleasant it made it difficult walking or driving down the street . Thankfully two of the families have left and it’s fairly peaceful now .

GoldMoon · Yesterday 07:53

I live next door but one to a woman who introduced herself in our 2nd viewing of the house ( we've now lived here 12 years )
She told us it's a nice , quiet place to live and people are willing to help if needed but everyone usually keeps to themselves .

Truth in the matter , what she really meant is she sees herself as the queen of the street and will complain to the council if you don't comply to her wishes .

Don't keep your lawn scalped , complain .

Leave your hedges for the birds to nest in so don't trim them monthly , complain . Someone parks outside her house , knocks on every door to complain .

Why would someone being a tradesperson mean they might attack you? 🤷‍♀️

This. Are trades people known to be aggressive or are they just beneath you? What a stupid thing to say or even think.

Usernamesarenoteasy · Yesterday 08:19

I can't type out everything my neighbour has done since they moved in, they have also had the kids taken by ss, twice.
I don't know how many times the police have been out, the constant noise, whether it's music, shouting, banging (what on earth to they find to bang that makes so much damn noise?) Slamming doors, visitors at all hours of the day and night, shouting in the street.

But my main reason for posting is just because I have actually found the people that 'get it'.
That the silence is somehow worse than the noise, because you're constantly on edge waiting for the next thing. The curtain twitching (I am constantly on my ring doorbell). The lack of sleep leaving you feeling so ill and barely able to function. And just how badly it affects your mental health.

Unless you're dealing with something like this, I don't think anyone can truly understand.

I'd contemplate selling my house and moving, but no one who came to view would part with a single pound to live here. So I am trapped.
