Anyone else hate their neighbours?

I’m just having a little rant. I hate my neighbours so much. They live as though they are in a detached house rather than a flat in a densely packed building. They ripped out the carpets and put wooden floors in without any consideration for noise. They stomp around with shoes indoors on said wooden floors. They get aggressive if anyone dares to complain and smoke cannabis which makes the building stink.

The building mangers are useless. They don’t do anything other than issue notices to all of the flats about antisocial behaviour but then do nothing about it.

Fortunately I am moving very soon. But I feel sorry for the next tenants. I was always puzzled when I first moved into this flat as to why the previous tenants had moved after only a few months. Now I know why.

WIBU to leave a parting note to the neighbours telling them how awful they are?

Since my DH died - 21 years ago now- I have moved 3 times and each move has been prompted by neighbours behaviour.
The one truth I live by is when you are thinking of buying a house have a good dig about who the neighbours are because I honestly think for a lot of people that's why the house in on the market in the first place. And even though I'm aware of that I've still been caught out.
I wouldn't leave a note OP. The deed is already done if the new tenants have already agreed to move in. It's not your problem anymore. I hope you find happiness in your new home.

PerhapsPerhapsMaybe · 13/10/2026 15:20

Thank you. Wise words. I am just utterly fed up with the unrelenting noise, banging around and shouting matches. The man is a bully and treats his wife like a servant. She appears never to go out and spends all day cleaning it seems. They have a preteen daughter who never smiles poor thing. He is a misogynistic pig who leers at the women in this building and throws his weight around because he owns rather than renting and boy does he let that be known. He hates me because I stood up to him and complained about the noise and since then has gone out of his way to make my living here unbearable.

We have a street full of fairly nice considerate neighbours, bar two people, one has just sold up, and I pray every day for the other one to do the same.

One down, one to go.

I hope wherever you land next PerhapsPerhapsMaybe you get more considerate neighbours than the twats you've been putting up with.

HappiestSleeping · 13/10/2026 15:22

I did in my previous house. Moved due to work and now live in a road with fabulous neighbours. Couldn't wish for better ones.

PerhapsPerhapsMaybe · 13/10/2026 15:26

The message I would leave is:

dear neighbour. You are a twat. I feel sorry for your wife and daughter.

I don’t hate them but there are certain things that get really annoying. Like the guy across the road who is currently using a strimmer to cut the grass across their whole garden. If he had even a basic mower it would probably only take around half an hour but with the strimmer it takes hours and all we hear is him revving it like it’s a motorbike the whole time.

DebbieSavage · 13/10/2026 15:28

My neighbour has a St George's flag hanging from a pole outside his front garden. I'm tempted to sneak out at night and cut it down but I think he's a tradesperson so I'm afraid he'll attack me if he found out it was me.

Barleymacgrew · 13/10/2026 16:01

Mine is utterly evil. Claims to run a cat sanctuary, but actually just collects cats and keeps them in cramped, stinking conditions with too many dogs in a 2 bed house. Screams and swears at her dogs all the time, grabs them roughly by the collar, but doesn't contain them within her garden, so they're always running away or shitting on our grounds. She runs an unlicensed dog kennels, cannot believe people leave their dogs with her. We had to fence off our gardens a few years ago because they were covered in crap from her animals, after politely asking her so many times to try to contain them. She started a harassment campaign falsely claiming flat chicken wire on top of our fence was hurting her cats! Her cats continously get run over and injured in the nearby road. Reports us to council constantly for supposed misdemeanours. Makes out she's a poor kind hearted animal lover and gets a lot of hand outs, help and charity, plus motability car and full benefits, even though there's nothing wrong with her apart from being a very nasty piece of work. I noticed she'd even reported one of her own 'friends' to the RSPCA, after they'd helped her by taking some of the cats off her - she thinks no one looks after them as 'well' as her. Very grandiose and narcissistic. She has threatened me and my children too. Just wishing she'd leave. We've nearly sold up on the back of it.

Why would someone being a tradesperson mean they might attack you? 🤷‍♀️

MyFairLady27 · 13/10/2026 16:26

Ye left last house for the stench from next door, the dogs poops were so thick the dogs had it up there legs and omg in the summer we had to stop opening windows and going in our garden, we left after 6 months and been very happy since in our place for the last six years

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 13/10/2026 16:53

You may be able to guess from my username 😄

Had to move from my home of 15yrs due to the awful neighbour. My mortgage would have been paid off by now but instead we’re up to our eyes in debt from the new house (renovation) and still have shit neighbours.

I don't think that poster posts in good faith usually.

I had one (upstairs) neighbour who started a party at three in the morning and this involved playing the black eyed peas "tonight's going to be a good night" three times in a row while some random woman screached "this is my favourite song" and proceeded to jump up and down on the floor just above where I was sleeping so the whole ceiling shook. They also had laminate flooring but TBF I don't think any flooring would muffle someone jumping up and down at three in the morning

My current neighbours are nice including the upstairs ones. So there is hope.

Why would you do something so hostile?

I assume you do know that the St George's flag is England's national flag? I doubt very much you'd be attacked but you would deserve to be challenged about it.

It's not a 'flag' its a hate symbol. The guy is a builder and constantly wears football shirts when he's out and about and in his garden. I seriously doubt he's just into vexilology.

Wheniswinenight · 13/10/2026 17:39

I don’t like my neighbours. We live in the middle of nowhere and only have 2 sets. One is ok but the others are awful. The whole issue stemmed from their two German shepherds who bark their heads off all day long. DH spoke to them about it and they took great offence and now don’t talk to us. The woman gave me the finger the other day when I met her on the lane. 😳
We are afraid to go down the official route with the council about the dogs as we are looking for planning permission and are afraid they scupper it on us. Would move tomorrow if I could.

You could make an anonymous welfare call the the RSPCA. Not as a tot for tat trying to be a nuisance thing but it might be justified if the reason they are barking is because they are left in the house all day/not exercised enough. Of course, if you know that not to be the reason for the barking then don't (or if you think neighbour would know it was you and be vengeful it depends on them and also whether it's the sort of place a passer by might notice the dogs as opposed to only the two neighbours).

CaNGCNk · 13/10/2026 17:48

I hate mine, extremely loud family with toddlers decided to move into a one bedroom flat, they scream and bang on the ceiling all day long,
kids stay up till midnight

MsWicked · 13/10/2026 18:00

My neighbours are a pair of cannabis junkies. Not a brain cell between them, mental health in the pan, and stoned most of the time. She doesn’t work, he has a job where he gets picked up in a van in the morning. At that point their, I can only assume, stoned dogs start to bark and do so at every single movement in the street for hours . Training is not an option, they’re too thick to do that.

I used to get so stressed with the stench and the racket but I decided not to anymore. Moving isn’t currently an option so the most effort I’ll give them, is to occasionally daydream about when they or their dogs meet their demise, and I will say thank fuck for that. Poor stupid, useless idiots. Inconsiderate, at a level I’ve never seen. Stoned to the point of being in the foetal position when I’ve dropped of a parcel. And again, so thick they don’t know people can and should train their dogs, and probably not subject them to cannabis air all day and night. No wonder the dogs are also mental.

Quite enjoyed getting that off my chest.

Clemdfandango · 13/10/2026 18:02

We almost moved due to our next door neighbours.

When we first moved in they were the only neighbours to come to our door with a gift and made us feel welcome but the reality was that they were highly inconsiderate, making noise at all hours.

They were tenants, yet seemed to do constant DIY, quite often banging and drilling from 10pm, even during the week.

They would have loud parties, yelling into microphones until the early hours. I did speak to them a number of times and they'd apologise but carry on.

It made me and DH paranoid to the point where if we saw them getting into their car, we'd check to see whether the way they were dressed made it look like they were out for the day/night; if they came back with shopping, we'd watch them unload to see whether they'd bought barbecue food.

I know that sounds like we're mad but they drove us to it. Honestly, unless you've been in that situation it's hard to describe without making us look like a pair of curtain-twitching nutcases but that's hiw they made us feel and the worst part was the not knowing when the next racket was going to start.

It was a couple and their teenage daughter but oddly enough, they were quite nice people, especially the daughter but they just lived very selfish, inconsiderate lives.

It really affected our mental health in a way I never thought possible, then suddenly last spring, they moved. The house was left empty for 6 months while the landlord updated the property and we were worried sick about who might move in but were so so relieved when a young couple (who have since had a baby) moved in and they are ideal neighbours...what a relief!

Don't underestimate the way bad neighbours can affect you.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 13/10/2026 18:03

@Wheniswinenight Please rest assured, neighbour comments that are vexatious are not taken into account. Make sure your planning application follows the councils planning policies in terms of size, overlooking, orientation etc and make it watertight. Don’t give the neighbours any ammo. Then absolutely get the council or a charity to
look at the dogs. One dreadful neighbour doesn’t stop you getting pp.
