The Western world is suffering from a crisis relating to a lack of empathy, which leads to horrifying attitudes towards people who migrate, and people who suffer from mental, physical or educational disability. The fact that people think that people should have fewer rights because of where they happen to have been born is terrifying. This shows itself in the language used about migration, for example, Brits who move abroad are referred to as expats, not immigrants.

I also think that the crisis of empathy is largely led by algorithms. It has become completely acceptable to use dehumanising and derogatory language about people.

Hard disagree. I actually think misplaced 'empathy' is the cancer eating away at the west. Please consider reading / looking into "Suicidal empathy: dying to be kind " by Gad Saad to understand what I mean.

Those who think sex is underated aren't doing it with the right person.

Even 20 years later?

If I moved to a different country and was housed , fed and clothed for nothing because the natives of that country were forced to pay for me I’d expect not to be made to feel very welcome by most of them.

So being housed, fed and clothed "for nothing" is dependent on your country of birth, yes? So a person's rights, wherever they are or whatever their circumstances, should be determined by where they were born?
I think this is the crux of this issue for me. Being happy to pay UC for a man who is just out of jail for a violent crime or abuse, because he was born in the Midlands- But that young lad who's fleeing war in the middle east, who has years of trauma, who wants to work and settle and contribute but all societal factors are against him- no way should we be giving him a warm meal and a bed and some empathy.

I agree with you on this one. But as I said before (on a different post) I’m British by marriage but not born in the UK and I agree with you. But I also understand that UK born citizens will feel an affinity with their “own people”. I think the benefits system needs a serious overhaul really. And so does the NHS but I digress

It is murder though, so if you are on for that, remind me again how much you care for children?

NameChanging20 · 13/10/2026 23:36

Men are better drivers on average.

parents should not be penalised for taking children on holiday when it suits them, as long as attendance is good otherwise,

MaidOfSteel · 13/10/2026 23:37

WhoGives2Fucks · 13/10/2026 14:58

Governments should prioritise their own citizens first regarding housing, jobs, doctors etc….. We shouldn’t have our own people living on the streets in 2026

Absolutely. Especially veterans who have served this country well.

WhoGives2Fucks · 13/10/2026 23:40

Spamatemyraisens · 13/10/2026 23:05

They are actually prioritised already. They get priority for social housing and they get extra resource allocation specific to veterans. As they should.

With regards to your other point, where does it end? For some (not all), it is a continuous cycle. It's not simply a case of meeting their "personal and individual needs". I am working with a man at the moment - he is a serial domestic abuser, drug user and has a history of violent offences. He has been homeless a number of times - evicted due to damage to the properties, non-payment of rent, anti-social behaviour and assault on other residents. Yet, if you spoke to him you would find that he is always the victim. It's not his behaviour that is problematic etc etc. He refuses intervention. He doesn't acknowledge the harm he has caused. He will go back to prison again and again and again. He will continue to trash any property he is provided. He will not pay a penny towards the upkeep of his children and he will claim benefits for the rest of his life. And we will continue to throw resources at him because ultimately, if we don't, then he or someone else will come to serious harm.

Yes fair enough, point made.

He sounds like a lost cause to be fair and his behaviour is far negatively affecting other people. If he’s getting that much help then i agree, where does it end. You can only lead a horse to water so the saying goes.

I was more meaning in general terms, those who have fallen on hard times, lost a job, breakdown of a relationship and find themselves living on the steet. What you’re describing

I think the sticking point here is that your opinion comes from a point of view that life begins at conception (correct me if I’m wrong) but that baseline is not agreed by all. Therefore, it’s logical to conclude that people who have abortions don’t think that. If you believe life start at conception then don’t have one. Are you against all abortions or do you think in some circumstances they should be allowed?

If the moon landing was fake, how can they bounce lasers off the reflector dish left there by the Apollo mission?

user1492757084 · 13/10/2026 23:46

All online gambling is superfluous.
Gambling is destructive, except for placing small bets on the horses when there at the races, or similar.

Alcohol consumption is not neccessary at family gatherings with childten.

The planet needs fewer people. Countries should protect their borders and sustain their wildlife and native habitats, water, trees and green spaces

Children should drink more milk and adults, less milk. Kids need the calcium for healthy growth but adults do not need six full milk coffees per day.

There are already millions of people living here in poverty, you think it’s sensible to make the problem worse?
I’d say you were right if the UK was the world leader country, laden with luxuries and everyone walking around in bowler hats and eating comfortably that our leaders still like to pretend we are.
The truth is we’re not, there are already millions here struggling day to day just to survive, just like most of the so called ‘trauma ridden middle easterners’.
Id like to know exactly how many are really fleeing active war zones, and how many come from areas that are just a bit shit (unlucky, we’re not all prince Charles or the Sultan of Brunei), so they can milk the empaths for everything while doing nothing.

Tattoos contribute to auto immune diseases.

How do you answer that to someone with an autoimmune and no tattoos ?

Where do you draw the line though? What about people in need that have zero chance of ever getting Britain by any means at all, how do we chose who gets to come here and who doesn’t? We can’t open up to everyone can we? The people in war torn countries in other parts of the world could use the same argument as you as to why it’s unfair they can’t come here simply because they were born in a county too far away to get here.

It’s sad to think of what many millions of people have to suffer but then you look at those with huge wealth and privilege. Life is unfair and it’s heartbreaking and people do have empathy but it’s human nature to want your own family, friends, neighbours and so on to be provided for first as a priority.

But you pay taxes to contribute to these people and other things that you might not want to pay for. You have to do that or you go to prison.
You might have a point if you didn’t have to, but you do.

Seems a few idiots on here believe that.

Conspiracy theorists - here's a handy tip. If the conspiracy you believe in needed more than 1-2 people to maintain it (here's a clue - the moon landings would have needed THOUSANDS of people to conspire and do so for decades..) - then chances are its YOU that is the "sheep" and a half-wit. FFS

I think this is a pretty good rule. But there are conspiracies that survive. The extent to which abuse in the church was successfully covered up is remarkable. (I think the moon landings are real. I cant think of a major conspiracy theory I confidently believe. I think the lab leak origin of covid and epstein didnt kill himself aren't totally mad, but on balance think they're not true)

It would still be the thing it is, e.g. a painting or a sculpture. But not called 'art'. Same as your book example.

Plenty of critics say a book is not a book. A very funny review of Amy Poehler’s ‘Yes Please’ made precisely that point! ‘You haven’t written a book’
