I respectfully disagree. I’m not British born, as you know, but I’m very frustrated with the benefits system. I don’t feel any better thinking it’s a British citizen claiming when they shouldn’t vs a non British person. I think, the nerve to game the system. The nerve to take something that you don’t need where if everyone contributed, those who actually can’t would have more?
I don’t know how rare it is really. In my time in the Uk I have know several of my friends “nannies” or “housekeepers” that are paid in cash and claiming benefits because they “don’t work” and/or they have small children. And being housed. I can think of 5 real examples in the area I lived in (Surrey) of the top of my head. Whilst I think many will in fact be entitled to benefits there are also many that work the system. It would be a lot less resentment if everyone did their bit. But no government is bold enough to actually do something radical.
But… it’s not my problem anymore, my husband and I were so disillusioned with the UK that we left the UK a couple of years ago. And we miss it, weirdly enough I think I miss it more than my husband and kids, but it was right for us.
BTW, Australia and Canada have restrictive immigration but you can still do so, depending on your profession. I know we are lucky to be able to have moved, not everyone can.
I know I won’t convince you and that’s ok 😁. We will have to agree to disagree. I would hazard a guess that your view stems from being born and bread on the UK and mine from being an immigrant most of my life.
I did enjoy our “debate” and I must thank you for keeping it polite, which I find it a rare event on MM.
