Genuinely shocked by this headline on MSN.com today (UK site).

The title is

"Muslim convert explains why UK is 'best' as she boasts 'everything is free'"

No one seems to blink an eye at this blatant Islamophobia anymore.

Substitute Muslim for any other minority and people would be shocked for example:

• "Jewish convert explains why UK is 'best' as she boasts 'everything is free'"
• "Black person explains why UK is 'best' as she boasts 'everything is free'"
• "Christian convert explains why UK is 'best' as she boasts 'everything is free'"

The paper would be sued if the quote is untrue.

There is good and bad in all walks of life.

The point the OP was making was that the woman might well be a muslim convert and she might well hold that opinion.

So neither fact was untrue.

But there was a correlation being drawn between the two by juxtaposing them that doesn't exist. Both elements were true but unrelated.

If you replace, Muslim convert explains..." with "Dog owner explains..." both the irrelevance of the qualifier and the implication becomes clear. Except that people wouldn't read, "Dog owner explains..." and assume it's a commonly held shared belief between, or says something important about, dog owners.

Neither her religion nor her dog owning status is relevant to her opinion.

MSN isn't "the media"

If you must regularly consume 'news', choose better sources of information... and even then, information can be very different from objective facts

Ann Widdecombe wasn’t even cold when she was murdered yet the papers busted their hump to get it out there that it was a white male loner.

Like I said, I don’t get your point, papers do write the ethnicity/characteristics of most people - it fills up empty space!

They have to “bust their hump” to confirm it’s a white male, or certain corners of the internet start speculating that it’s the actions of a migrant.

It’s not just to fill empty space, it’s to try and prevent Neanderthals from deciding every issue we ever have is the fault of a brown person somewhere.

We also have a habit recently of the public “demanding” answers in live, ongoing police matters, and deciding there’s some sort of conspiracy when information isn’t shared with them that is frankly nothing to do with them.

I did my dissertation on the shift from anti-Semitism to Islamophobia in the wake of 9/11 and I can honestly say that it’s only got worse and worse from there. It’s truly shocking and many people do not see the similarities to the “othering” that happened to Jews in Germany

Well the good news is, as Islam becomes more and more influential in British society, the type of people who have Islamophobic opinions will become more and more afraid to voice them in public. With the passage of time I imagine we will progress enough as a society to finally beat islamophobia, so we can take heart in knowing that this is a very temporary issue.

Again, I don’t get your point. There is over 82percent white makes in this country yet you’ve stated that sixty percent of white males did the murders.

By your figures, that leaves 18percent of males doing forty percent of the rest of murders.

Claiming the paper is just giving the facts and that she does happen to be a Muslim is missing the point. Some posters are clearly doing this deliberately of course. The reason this is Islamophobic is because her religion is completely irrelevant to her quote, so mentioning it is intended to stir up hate against Muslims.

When a white British person from a Christian background says something controversial their religion is not mentioned unless it’s relevant to the quote. Have a look at that newspaper and any of the others. When they’re quoting white people about benefits, or any subjects, is their religion ever mentioned?

People are already absolutely terrified to express their concerns. That's why we never ever see anyone expressing concern about immigration. They are silenced! I only know people want to stop the boats because the occasional brave patriot politely and quietly mentions it.
