Islamophobia becoming normalised in the media

Genuinely shocked by this headline on MSN.com today (UK site).

The title is

"Muslim convert explains why UK is 'best' as she boasts 'everything is free'"

No one seems to blink an eye at this blatant Islamophobia anymore.

Substitute Muslim for any other minority and people would be shocked for example:

  • "Jewish convert explains why UK is 'best' as she boasts 'everything is free'"
  • "Black person explains why UK is 'best' as she boasts 'everything is free'"
  • "Christian convert explains why UK is 'best' as she boasts 'everything is free'"

Muslim convert explains why UK is 'best' as she boasts 'everything is free'

Islamophobia becoming normalised in the media
OP posts:

I saw the video and she did say those things and she is Muslim so I see no lies being told.

HelenaWaiting · 14/10/2026 11:33

I don't have a problem with what she said. I am disabled and also grateful that my treatment is free at the point of delivery. We live in a society where every statement seems to be viewed as an opportunity to catch someone out.

But - I don't accept that she was targeted. She was interviewed, and could, presumably, have refused. I also don't agree with the term "Islamophobia". It isn't a phobia, which would be an involuntary reaction, it's hatred. Whether that is rational or irrational hatred depends on your point of view.

Agree so why is the OP patronising this woman. That is the question.

Only because it includes pensions. Otherwise you can see how it skews towards Bangladeshi and Pakistani.

TicklishReader · 14/10/2026 12:19

@nomas You should really start a thread in site stuff about being followed around the site and ganged up on by certain posters.

According to some of them, that's harassment.

Agree this is a horrible headline. You can't have double standards about these things. Obviously what she is saying is appalling and if they want to go down the line of evidence that one group takes more before something do it in an evidence based way and don't be racist in the words you use.

Because it is MY demographic and MY cultural heritage and the country of my birth.
If I wanted to live in an Islamic country I'd make that choice and move there.

If we accept that people of other cultures and skin colours prefer to live with the same cultures/ethnicities ... why can that not be the same for English people without being called racist?

Edited

I asked you what was superior about being white British, specifically white. You have answered by telling me you don't want to live in an Islamic country. And you can't understand why equating being not white with being Muslim, conflating culture, skin colour and religion leads to you being called a racist?

Neverstopwondering · 14/10/2026 16:43

Just want to add that though I think this headline is Muslim hate and vulgar. I don't think the media is in general. Social media depending on your algorithm will be obviously. However the media is most very carefully in this country because there are guidelines and social outrage. The media is however not neutral but pro left thinking or pro right thinking, with that comes some prejudices.

I didn’t see your other comment before it got deleted.

The gist of what I’m seeing here though is that you don’t want to live with other ethnicities, and if you did you’d move to a Muslim country?

It is not YOUR demographic, YOUR culture and YOUR country.

It is OUR all of the above, and you don’t get to decide whether we should live amongst different ethnicities and religions.

It is also MY country, and culture, and I don’t remember giving PaganPentacle the authority to decide who lived in it.

Hear hear.
And it's also MY country, the country of MY birth, and I DO want people of different ethnicities, cultures and religions to live in it.
And I DON'T want People to live in it with views like PPs.
If we have to accept the people with pps views in England, why can't pp accept that there are people with MY views too? And that people with MY views are fortunate enough to have the society with the diverse demographic we prefer and we will defend it. So for PP, that just TOO bad.

People who refuse to see the benefits of a diverse society need to be shunned from our society like the neanderthals that they are.

There is no legitimate reason to hate multiculturalism, it brings with it fresh new perspectives, amazing food and so much amazing culture that you would ordinarily need to travel half way around the world to experience. How on earth can somebody say no to any of that?

On the contrary Debbie. I've completely changed my mind. Good old fashioned British values that's what we need. Pie and mash. More tea vicar. The Lambeth walk. God save the king. Morris dancing, bowler hats and umbrellas. With bells on. Raise the flag. There'll always be an Ingerland...

SleeplessInWherever · 14/10/2026 22:26

I think we should make them a section of this country, possibly Clacton, or maybe an island, call it Ingerland and they can have it.

They can fuck off there to drink British tea (?!?), eat exclusively scones and British beef, and never have to meet anyone even with a vague tan ever again.

Ta-ra. 👋🏻

Ketzele · 14/10/2026 23:28

I agree, OP, the barrage of media islamophobia is just vile.

Thatladdo · 15/10/2026 01:55

Its a true, clear statement of fact.
Followers of islam are not and should not be above being observed, critisised and their failings highlighted when appropriate.

Youve confused Islamophobia with truthophobia

rainingsnoring · 15/10/2026 02:34

Yes, the fact that they have chosen to tell everyone that she is a 'Muslim convert' is deliberate Islamophobia. It's blatant, happens a lot and has become normalised.
See some of the posts on MN and many elsewhere too.

As you say, if the headline was 'Jewish/Christian convert' or 'black person', everyone would be up in arms.

OnlyHalfAStory · 15/10/2026 07:11

I agree, OP.

By inserting the 'muslim convert' modifier, they have implied a link between her faith and her opinion.

I have several muslim friends and acquaintances. They're all professionals, they all work and none of them claim benefits. Are there Muslims who take the piss? Of course there are. Just like there are people of any (and no) faith group who take the piss.

I've nc for this in case anyone recognises him/me from this.

One of my muslim friends is also a younger man in his 30s. He offered me a lift home from work one Friday when my car was in the garage. I accepted and he said we'd need to make a slight detour first. I said that was fine, of course, as I wasn't in rush and he was doing me a huge favour.

So we stopped at the primary school at the end of the road, he went in and came out with milk cartons and bags of unopened fruit - schools quite often have an excess. Every Friday for the past two years, they had sorted and he had collected excess milk cartons and fruit and dropped it of at a local temporary accommodation housing young homeless people (16-25) including single mothers and their babies/young children.

I was amazed that I didn't know he did this or that the temporary accommodation was even there. He explained that another of our colleagues (another muslim man) had been doing it for years and he'd taken over when this man retired.

In my local city, there are often groups of muslim men out on a Saturday night cheerfully and good natured handing out free bottles of water to drunk etc people and food and water to homeless people.

When the bin strikes happened in Brimingham, a volunteer group of Muslim men organised themselves with trucks etc to do collections so that areas didn’t become overrun with rubbish.

Local mosques open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to offer food and company to people who would otherwise be spending Christmas alone. As well as doing food deliveries to local elderly people and outreach support of homeless people who would otherwise be alone and have nothing.

Those are the Muslims I know and these are the Muslims I see. I don't recognise the hateful rhetoric in any of the people I know or see around me.

Of course there are unpleasant Muslims. But that's just because some people are really unpleasant! There are plenty of really unpleasant white Christian English (whichever part you want to focus on) people too and most of them can be found spewing nonsense on social media...

That's the thing. There are people who live in homogenous bubbles of people like them, consuming endless media slop; and people who move about in the world actually meeting and getting to know people of other ethnicities and cultures.
No one in the second group could possibly buy into these ridiculous stereotypes about Muslim people, because they are based on deliberately harvested extreme examples, and are by no means reflective of the Muslim community, who are, as you say, ordinary people, some great, some not so.
(I know that's the cue for a slew of negative anecdotes from people claiming otherwise so brace ourselves!)
I do agree with you that there is a strong culture of community care and generosity within Islam and have numerous examples of similar myself. But people believe what they choose to.

Muslim Sisters of Eire are a fantastic group of volunteers in Dublin and now nationwide who feed the homeless every night without fail and often get racist abuse for being there but stll do it. They also provide a range of support services for homeless, women and youth and promoting empowerment, social inclusion and diversity. They want to give something back. More of theses stories in the media please.

The right wing press are really desperately trying, but it isn't working. Speak to people in real life (even people who are more right leaning) and you will find they think these sorts of 'news' stories are bollocks too. Ultimately it will make right leaning people more embarrassed to be seen as right wing, as it is associated with being poorly informed and using unreliable research and media articles to support their views. Probably not quite the outcome the media want, but they could always just get rid of their bias and, you know, actually start doing their job.

In my area the likes of the Express, Sun and other papers are still on the shelves when I pop into the shops at 5pm. I just think a lot of the media are struggling to get people's attention and get the footfall on their sites, so rely on click bait bollcks to capture people. The news sites are either under a pay wall or so full of shitty adverts they are unreadable. With these issues, coupled with the bias and shitty journalism, it's no wonder they struggle really. People want news and facts, they are not getting it without having to shift through a load of shite first. Who has time for that?

I completely agree.

I have noticed recently that ive had some of those AI videos crop up on fb of 'Muslims' demanding England stop selling bacon and other such nonsense.

They are quite obviously AI but the comments suggest that some people genuinelly believe it or, at least, don't want to question it too closely because it feeds their rage and they enjoy the rage.

The number of comments I see saying things along the lines of, "This is a Christian country and we will continue to eat our bacon sandwiches."

I'd suggest some of these 'Christians' need to examine the Old Testament a little more closely...

Morons.
