Islamophobia becoming normalised in the media

Genuinely shocked by this headline on MSN.com today (UK site).

The title is

"Muslim convert explains why UK is 'best' as she boasts 'everything is free'"

No one seems to blink an eye at this blatant Islamophobia anymore.

Substitute Muslim for any other minority and people would be shocked for example:

  • "Jewish convert explains why UK is 'best' as she boasts 'everything is free'"
  • "Black person explains why UK is 'best' as she boasts 'everything is free'"
  • "Christian convert explains why UK is 'best' as she boasts 'everything is free'"

Muslim convert explains why UK is 'best' as she boasts 'everything is free'

And I am pretty sure this is completely made up by the Daily Express too.

No I saw that interview on the news. It's not invented. I didn't know what religion she was.

Sorry but I don’t like Islam, I’ll say it truthfully, I think it’s an awful religion based on the man being superior and women are oppressed.

I think I'd research that if I were you.

It's ok, you can just Google 'how are women regarded in Islam?' And it'll give you a comprehensive overview. (I tried it for you.)

Most Muslims live by that. Not what you see on the news and SM.

Huh.

It's strange. If it is such a forward thinking, peaceful religion, why are so many of the countries it controls so backwards?

Why are women treated like cattle and have less rights and say in anything than men?

Why did the women of Iran go from wearing colourful 60's clothes to all covered in shapeless black almost overnight? Personal choice?

Why can little girls from 9 years old legally marry?

Why can women and girls be stoned to death for being raped? Or burned/hung/drowned for 'shaming' their family.

Why can't they drive, work or go to school?

It's almost like their holy book has some very questionable, and ultimately society destroying stuff in it.

There are indeed extremists in most religions, and I don't like those either. But I don't think they are the majority in any religion, and I'm not sure that banning all religions to solve the problem of extremism is fair or proportionate, when that would mean taking away something that is a source of comfort and meaning to so many other people.

As an atheist, I value being free to believe what I believe. And I value that same freedom for people who have different beliefs to my own - they should be free to believe what they believe.

I don't necessarily disagree with you that many religions started as a form of control, threatening people with God's wrath or eternal damnation etc if they don't behave in certain ways. I don't like that approach at all. My mother grew up with a very "fire and brimstone" version of Catholicism and I think it was very damaging. But at the same time, I don't think those models are representative of all religious thinking, and there are many much more moderate people - and institutions - which interpret things quite differently.

I'm sorry that you had a bad experience in the area where you lived previously, but I don't think it's valid to extrapolate from those experiences to make assumptions about Islam as a faith or all Muslims. I've known lots of Muslims over the years, both here in the UK and when I lived for a while in a predominantly Muslim country. There have been some that I really didn't like. But equally, there have been some wonderful people who have become dear friends.

I'm not saying that religious extremism isn't an issue. Of course it is. If we look at what's happening in Afghanistan, for instance, it is utterly abhorrent - but all of my Muslim friends think that as well, and it doesn't represent their interpretation of their religion in the slightest. And yes, there will be people who think that terrorist atrocities are ok or even desirable - but again, such views are as abhorrent and incomprehensible to most Muslims as they are to me. Just as very extreme Christian fundamentalist views are abhorrent and incomprehensible to most Christians.

Personally, I don't think banning religion is the answer. Instead, we need to try to understand why people get radicalised and adopt those extreme views, and then we need to tackle the root causes of that.

Excellent post.
We are currently seeing some horrific behaviour from extremists in several religions play out openly in front of us. This is certainly not exclusive to Muslim extremists. It also involves extreme Jewish beliefs from Zionists and fundamental Christians, who have initiated a war in West Asia which seems likely to spiral further than it already has.

It does not follow that most Muslims/Jews or Christians hold similarly extremist views and most are repulsed by the use of religion as an excuse for violence and prejudice.

Kudos to @namechangeforthiswun for engaging in such a mature and respectful way.

So can they and the state of Israel be criticised?

First you said nobody can criticise Judaism and Jewish beliefs, now you’re talking about Israel. Which one ist it?
But of course you can criticise both, who told you that you couldn’t?

I’ve had comments deleted on here for anti semitism when I’ve criticised Israel. A certain poster (who has posted here) reported them because she believes being anti Zionism is anti Jew.

Uppitymuppity · 17/10/2026 03:03

Black people, really? Because they all come from black land yes?

Did you criticise Israel or say Israel should not be allowed to exist? If the later are there other countries that shouldn't be allowed to exist or just the only Jewish state in the world?

You can research the answer to that for yourself too.

Very, very briefly, though, the West holds a lot of responsibility for what has happened in those countries. Not the Qu'ran.

I believe in a two state solution as the most realistic and peaceful option.

Whilst the west has in many cases acted in a way that allowed Islamic extremists to take over countries. To say the Quran does not play a part in most the things they poster has written means you either have not read the Quran and Hadiths or misinterpret many of its teachings. For example it is harder for a woman to enter heaven than a man, nearly impossible in fact. A husband can punish a wife using a few different tactics if she isn't respectful or providing sex. People either speak to Muslim or ex Muslim women that are frank and honest about these things or pick up a Quran yourself. Luckily most Muslims like Christians and Jews practice a more wishy washy version of their religion that leaves out the badly aged bits.

The men doing those things have agency. A religion is an every day thing too not just the text. It’s how it informs laws and lack of rights.

Hi, OP.

Just a heads-up that we've moved your thread to Chat, as it isn't really an AIBU topic. You'll probably find it's a better fit there, and hopefully you'll get more of the kind of responses you're looking for.

Best wishes,

Oh, I have researched it. My father fled an islamic country because he didn't want his wife and daughters to suffer what he had to witness his mother and sisters enduring as he grew up.

He fled to the West to save us, you know, the evil civilisation that gave women autonomy, the vote and equal rights. How dare you say other men's evil is all their fault. Why do you infantalise rapists and murderers?

Have you actually done any research yourself, or just relied on the lies told to you? I have noticed those that like to throw out the 'Well I'm not going to tell you my knowledge for some inexpliacble reason, go 'research' it' never seem to have any actual points of their own.

Perhaps you can answer this then.

What are women promised in heaven, specifically?

The book is very detailed when it comes to describing what men will get as a reward in heaven. Luxury, eternal youth, eternal virgin hooris (minimum of two up to 72).

And equally it describes the majority of hell dwellers being women, because of their 'ingratitude' to their husbands. But, if they are really grateful and pious, they will have all 'imperfections' (like periods, aging and illness) stripped from them, so they can serve their husband and his army of whores in all eternity. Or she can burn in hell.

Lovely.

OP, I’m surprised that you were unaware the media uses words like Muslim, disabled, queer, non-binary, asylum seeker, benefit claimant, single mum, Russian… as rage bait. I’m not going to click on your link because my algorithm is going to start feeding me similar rage bait but you need to get into the habit of avoiding obvious traps like this and teaching your phone to avoid trashy sources.

I’m not surprised that they were able to find a real person that matches at least one of the labels in my list to say something that would get their photo published and readers commenting negatively.

Well, if the comments were deleted it’s difficult to know what they actually said and whether or not they were in fact antisemitic.

I’ve definitely seen people criticise the actions of Israeli government on here, without being deleted.

Well I haven't got many friends at all TBH.

But I wouldn't cultivate a friendship with someone who holds strong religious views.

I mean I am quite atheist in my thinking and not into respecting others beliefs.

I guess if a religious person could handle that I think that they are completely wasting their time then maybe we could be mates.

I find that rather sad. I am an atheist but I have friends with all manner of different religious and spiritual beliefs.

I don't share their beliefs they are fantastic people who enrich my life in so many ways.
