Is anyone planning on making these for their kid(s)?

If so, what are you putting in them?

I’ve given up on this sort of thing as after the novelty wears off there’s only so much seasonal stuff you can have! But I use the existing stuff and fill it with Halloween snacks. Aldi do some really good ones this year!

We love Halloween and it’s lovely to see so many people embracing it now! It’s an age old tradition after all. Anything that makes the seasons brighter is good for me. I love seeing how excited and happy the children get at this time of year.

I got a Christmas themed pillow and blanket set for DD about 4/5 years ago from Lidl and both are still going strong. She sleeps with her pillow every night!

I googled it. How ridiculous. They’ll get loads of candy anyway why give them that plus a bunch of other things? I thought there was a COL crisis!

It's the endless crap though. Pj's and a new cup/blanket in a box every holiday is a waste, based on the thread up to 5-6 times per year.... Why? Birthday and Christmas is enough opportunity for gifts.

Who's to say people buy the same thing for every holiday? And how are PJs a waste? Don't your children ever need new clothes? Most people don't wear them once - several people have already said this, and not only on this particular thread, but every single bloody bah humbug that ever (frequently) crops up.

Interested in this thread?

Well, I did a boo basket for teen DD last year and I'll be doing one this year too. She's gone through a really shit time with her health, and it's just a nice little thing for her. It's more autumnal cosy than Halloween tbh

Last year it was things like cosy slipper socks, a toadstool fleece blanket, maple syrup shower gel, cinnamon latte sachets, cinnamon gifflar, bonfire log mini rolls

But surely it was in landfill by 2nd November 2022?!

It's like some PPs can't get their head around the idea that some nice little treats can brighten someone's day. I'm sure it bought your DD a lot of joy to know you'd thought about her.

Cinnamon gifflars are yummy!!

Hope your DD is okay and enjoys her cosy autumn basket 🙂

No. Because I haven’t lost my mind. Yet. 🙄

Shinyhappyapple · 10/10/2026 22:44

I’d never heard of these before and my DC is way, way too old for such a thing, and I’m not personally keen on Halloween either. Pumpkins and cute ghosts are Ok but the giant fake spiders everywhere freak me out.

However! I think it’s quite a nice thing to do. Given Halloween is generally at the end of half term week then a basket full of themed crafts, games as a half term activity is a really good idea.

Hugathug · 10/10/2026 22:01

I will :) I’m sure my tax payer money is funding your B&M trips so you’re very welcome !

You will find plenty of us on Mumsnet are paying more tax than average, try not to be a complete embarrassment.

Also who said these baskets are full of cheap tat? Everything in DD’s basket is consumable (beauty/food) and what growing child doesn’t need new winter pyjamas or socks? 🙄

In your opinion.

HobgoblinNorFoulFiend · 10/10/2026 22:59

I wonder what the correlation is between this thread and the posters who were spitting venom over people being allowed to buy biscuits and cigarettes during their socially distanced visits to the supermarket during lockdown?

If you don’t have much money, spend half on bread and half on roses. Your soul needs nourishment beyond just the dry, bare minimal gruel.

No, they are twatty tacky nonsense and also favoured by the “I’m peddling shit from home” brigade. Yack.

Lifesd · 10/10/2026 23:03

More tat and nonsense - all destined for landfill - depressing!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 10/10/2026 23:03

Misery is rampant. 😵‍💫

oustedbymymate · 10/10/2026 23:04

Fuck no

Hard NO

I keep being told there’s a cost of living crisis, and that young people can’t buy houses (and it’s all the fault of the pensioners by the way), but it seems that every 5 minutes there’s some sort of festival that requires the purchasing of more stuff. Where will it end? I’m so so glad this madness didn’t go on when my kids were younger. Presents are for birthdays and Christmas.

Unless you’re absolutely minted, I would strongly advise you to save your money for when they’re older and they want driving lessons, car, uni funding, holidays with friends, clothes, more clothes, gym membership, sports subs, house deposit……. The things that seem sweet now will set you up for a lifetime of material expectations, so I hope you’ve got plenty of money OP!!!

tmom3 · 10/10/2026 23:10

I did one for each of my daughters last year! I popped in
autumn mug
hotel Chocolat little pumpkins
hot chocolate sachets for velvetiser
Halloween face mask
black nail polish
lip balm
fluffy Halloween socks
cute little pumpkin for their bedrooms
halloween sweets
halloween colouring book and pencils
Roblox gift card

I don’t care if it’s over the top. My children don’t expect it. This year I haven’t done them one as we are going on holiday over the Halloween half term, so I’ve bought them all matching pjs instead- another thing Mumsnet hates!

Their childhood is also my motherhood. Everyone comments on how respectful and polite they are. They are genuinely very kind and thoughtful so I have no issue in buying them little treats every so often.

DogAnxiety · 10/10/2026 23:10

It’s really not misery to refuse to take on this consumerist, tacky, rubbish. Why would I spend money and effort on such horrible things, and why would I teach my kids that every “event” requires some awful horrible cheap memorialiasation like this.

Also, it is just another pointless thing for women to become responsible for.

How many dads do you think are out there wondering whether to carefully craft a “boo basket” right now? Probably 1, the fictional Kevin from Motherland….

Bellabelloo · 10/10/2026 23:13

I sent one to my goddaughter at university from here: https://www.notanotherbunchofflowers.com/product-category/boo-baskets/ I don’t think there is anything wrong with giving/sending someone a little cosy, comforting gift at this time of year.

You did start a consumerism BS thread 😂 this is the SM effect, and it's always consumerist crap that's promoted.

Spend money on stuff it's Halloween/Easter/Christmas/any other excuse.

Edited

Are you cancelling Christmas this year? Not buying anything for the season?

HettyMeg · 10/10/2026 23:20

No because I don't want to spend money on that and most of it will go to landfill anyway. We will still have sweets and pumpkin carving
