Is anyone planning on making these for their kid(s)?

If so, what are you putting in them?

All our decorations get out away in the eloft for next year.

Are you taking about the food? Eaten?

We don't buy stuff for the sake of it, certainly not novelty one use items. So they get used or worn or read etc

We don't buy a blanket every year for example, or craft sets that limit creativity.

So what was it exactly you were asking the PP 😂

I'm shocked people get decorations out for October. What bollocks.

People decorate for Autumn these days, convincing themselves it's just a lovely thing to do, and someone will come in and go " ohhhhh, but I've always done it".

Well oddly enough 5 years ago or whatever the supermarkets didn't have any where near as much autumn crap in sale...but now they do, because it's a new thing.... A new way to get people to spend money... Boo boxes are the same thing. People go "ohhhhh but I'd buy them pyjamas anyway and slippers" but they say that about the Christmas even boxes too.,.. and making out we're miserable or something for not putting it in a box and making it a gift giving occasion.... they're buying into consumerism, and promoting the consumerism of ancient traditions and not realising it...

The FUCKING TAT people buy in the name of Boo Boxes. Already people saying they buy them ghost cushions, pumpkin crap, novelty items, a few sweets/chocolate, hot chocolate, new cups etc.

All of the taaaaaaat stuff people have bought specifically to give as a present in the name of an ancient festival and trying to pretend it's normal and they're not victims of marketing...

Giving the reason of "I'd buy them new OJs anyway" ...but then going to buy novelty expensive pyjamas, instead of the normal ones you might purchase...

Give it a few years and kids will e getting Halloween Presents, just like people are growing the idea that Easter needs to be a gift giving event, and decorate Easter trees etc ...and we should all have North pole breakfasts, and Christmas Eve boxes, expensive gift advent calendars, family matching PJs etc etc etc

TBF, I'm 36 and we had something similar when I was a kid. We used to get spooky things like witches fingers and vampire teeth, plus a Halloween cake or biscuits thing from the bakery and a Halloween themed video./horror films for us all to watch. Dad also cooked a spooky themed meal

GabriellaFaith · 11/10/2026 19:35

Halloween theme marshmallows from the £ shop for hot choc over the school break, glow in the dark pj's, pot of slime, book.

CatamaranViper · 11/10/2026 19:36

I don't do a boo box but I do hide DSs Halloween costume in a carved pumpkin. We've also got some games that come out and love a good Halloween craft, have you seen the zombie hand you can make that rises from a pile of mud?

NooNakedJacuzziness · 11/10/2026 19:38

Never mind the boo box, hope we’re all doing Ghoul on the Stool (ghoul comes to visit with the threat of telling Satan of any misdemeanours, kids behave otherwise they get dragged to hell)? No? Just me?😈

Babayagahaha · 11/10/2026 19:42

Just how many sweets did your kids get???

Not an insignificant amount but they're not eaten daily here, so they last ages.

Plus my mum goes absolutely mental at Christmas and the kids all end up with at least double what they get from Father Christmas. It's obscene.

And we've had Easter eggs and birthday chocolates which have lesser dates than some sweets.

pollymere · 11/10/2026 19:57

Whatever happened to taking your DC to a shop to buy sweets?

They really don't need all these things. They are literally unnecessary tat.

Maybe spend time with DC instead? Make cupcakes or carve edible veg you'll actually use.

I'll be spending time with DD doing the Halloween arts and crafts!

It could be argued, then, that no one needs anything extra. 🙄
What a boring life.

Yes. As well as December 1st boxes, a d Christmas Eve boxes, and expensive toy advent calendars, and the growing trend Easter basket, decorating trees, Easter presents...and decorating for Autumn, which is becoming more of a thing.

Spend, spend, spend... And then call others miserable cunts for not being suckered into it all, because obviously you're a miserable cow if you don't buy stuffed pumpkins, skincare sets, teddies, crafts, and novelty pyjamas for your kids. People pretend it's stuff they'd buy anyway just to feel better about falling for the consumerist lifestyle being peddled by social media influencers ... who are paid to promote this crap and normalise it, making you feel like you're missing out or doing your children a disservice if you don't buy in.

I'm proud to be a miserable cunt!

MrsCplus · 11/10/2026 20:19

Not for my kids no. My husband yes 😂

The PP didn't actually say what she gets, so you're making a lot of assumptions about "fucking tat".

The fleece blanket I put in DD's boo box last year has been on her bed all year, she loves it, so who are you to say it's fucking tat? Are autumnal themed toiletries fucking tat? God forbid somebody gets a bit of joy from a maple syrup flavoured shower gel when they could be washing with coal tar soap eh? And don't get me started on pumpkin spice latte...water's good to drink enough isn't it.

And actually, we've never done north pole breakfasts, or elf on the shelf, or Xmas eve boxes or matching Xmas PJs. I think that when it comes to Xmas, all of that would dilute the magic of Father Christmas.

Fine, feed into the consumerism.... Crack on.

Rosieposy89 · 11/10/2026 20:23

I did one for my 5yo. I put in a halloween colouring book, a few spooky stories and some little M&S biscuits. She appreciated it. I'm not taking her trick or treating so this brings a little bit of seasonal joy for her

See there it is...being called miserable for not joining in the consumerism....

Nothing wrong with a treat, but BiinBices and the like are just feeding into the message that bwe must all spend spend spend all the flipping time.. making everything into what shall we buy for this event/yo make x occasion....and then sharing and promoting and normalising it....

Hey, you do you. I don't think you're miserable for not doing a boo box. Just as I don't think I'm not miserable for not doing a Xmas eve box.

What I do think is miserable is slagging off people who choose to do it, and batting it away as consumerism. I'm not sure that putting together a few bits that would be bought anyway, albeit with an autumnal/hygge/Halloween theme, becomes consumerism just because you put it in a basket and give it a name. It's just a nice thing to do.

Rubyslipboots · 11/10/2026 20:53

It wasn’t a basket but I always bought crafts etc to at October half term with mine. I also bought ingredients for fairy cakes and gingerbread biscuits. So we made the food then I gave the children free rein on decoration!
I bought new nightwear! Which they worn whenever!
My daughter also made us watch the Halloween Scooby-doo and the hex girls film!

But it's not.

Because, I can guarantee, you are also a consumer. I would put money on the fact you do not, in fact, live a spartan and virtuous life, rising at 4am to don your simple, no frills clothing, of which you only own 3 sets (because why would you need multiple options of clothing?) before eating a basic, nutritionally balanced breakfast with no pointless luxuries such as coffee or sugar, ready to walk the 4 miles to your workplace where you diligently complete your tasks before heading home to a dinner of gruel and vegetables, before scrubbing your kitchen with vinegar and baking soda, and then straight to bed.

Because actually, all of us have more than we "need" in life and life would be pretty fucking awful if we didn't sometimes have nice things just because they are nice, because they bring a little smile to your face, because they make life a bit cosier.

You probably buy a lot of crap that other people don't because that's your thing. Some people love fancy face creams or fine whiskeys or designer clothes or trainers or have classic cars which cost them loads of money but make them happy. Some people spend hundreds on LEGO or collect Star Wars dolls or vintage Barbies or vinyl records. I'm not into any of that, but I don't feel the need to mock someone else's joy just because it's not what makes ME happy.

If another Mum enjoys putting a blanket off Vinted, a pair of pajamas and a lipgloss in a basket and watching their child's face light up once a fucking year and you can't just be happy for them or at a minimum myob then yes, you're miserable, and a hypocrite to boot.

mumumental · 11/10/2026 22:17

Hate the idea and I hate the stupid name for them. The usual tat, no doubt.

So spending time rather than money with your kids is a boring life?! Do something extra rather than just buying tat. And do you know who told me they'd rather not have loads of plastic tat? My DC.

I thought this was stupid and useless until I saw Treaty of Versailles. 🙂

Obviously I would write this out on various bits of old recycling cardboard and get the children involved. It’s all about the crafting.
