Is anyone planning on making these for their kid(s)?

If so, what are you putting in them?

What are people putting in their Remembrance Day baskets? I was thinking a make your own poppy, edible medals, a dry ration bag, and a copy of the Treaty of Versailles.

I thought this was stupid and useless until I saw Treaty of Versailles. 🙂

I genuinely do reuse the same wicker basket each time and have done for 5 years now. I have been using the same large hamper on Christmas Eve for 25 years. Three new pairs of pyjamas over winter for a growing teen is hardly excessive.

Boo basket contents are consumable items like shower foam, face mask, eye patches, Lanaige lip mask, ordinary skincare, pyjamas (plain stripy ones), fluffy socks and a colouring book plus popcorn and sweets for a movie night.

December 1st I refill it as an alternative to a beauty advent calendar with individual items I know DD will use as opposed to wasting items from a calendar. Plus a pair or festive pyjamas she will wear until she outgrows and yet another colouring book as she loves them plus a chocolate coin for each day. I wrap each item and use stickers to number them by day - on a few days there are envelopes with details of days out on them such as a theatre trip, cinema, feeding reindeer’s etc).

The Christmas Eve hamper has the same plate for Father Christmas’ mince pie and his cup for a drink we got when DS was born 25 years ago, a copy of a book purchased in 2008 and a quality street tin I refill from several bags now because they used to have so many more in them (plus taste better 🙄) plus a pair of non Christmas themed pyjamas for anyone staying in my home on Christmas Eve - this year everyone has traditional tartan and will wear them again on a family weekend away in February.

Easter tends to be short pyjamas for spring/summer, more make up and skincare plus some Easter sweets.

These are all things I would buy anyway and we don’t post pictures of them on social media etc.

But the fact that there are beauty advent calendars that you are replacing with different cosmetics... Is just consumerism in two different forms.

People do like to justify their actions they've fallen victim to marketing and consumerism and SM influencers.

People never used to do this "a gift a day" (in whatever form) a generation ago or so. Bit shops, Social media etc have normalised spending ££ on novelty advent calendars...

Boo basket
Push present
Brr basket

wtf?!

Just no. Every day I feel like Wall-E was an actual prediction of the future. Earth is totally fucked

I have seen mention of these on social media, are they a thing now?

Dinosaurhearmeroar · 11/10/2026 17:49

My parents did. I loved waking up each morning to a little surprise. It made the run up to Christmas feel so exciting. So does my daughter in December.

More over consumption and waste, for what?

Have a pumpkin if you must.

Exactly this. Do we really need more rampant consumerism. Halloween is now worth billions and that waste goes somewhere afterwards

Saddaughter999 · 11/10/2026 18:21

I looooooove it, will do for kids with Halloween sweets, pyjamas and some pumpkin teddies (Sainsbury's ).

What isn't consumable goes in nearly labelled boxes in our attic and comes back out every October.

Ok. So they fell for consumerism too?

Where do the rest of your Christmas decorations go?

RUDizzy · 11/10/2026 19:06

Thank fuck my kids are grown up. I couldn’t be dealing with this sort of BS.

Boo baskets…whatever next?!

I mean...the blankets, the ghost cushions, the novelty socks, the water bottles etc..not the baubles you use each year for decades.

The novelty, one use type stuff.

Redragtoabull · 11/10/2026 19:07

Fuck no, I just looked up boo basket and they want around £15 to £18 for an unfilled basket!

It will be Hallowe'en present giving next... For on the day, they'll wake up to special little gifts on the table or something.

Just watch Christmas - the nonsense grows each year....1st December boxes, North like breakfast, elf on the shelf, gift advent calendars, Christmas Eve boxes, Christmas day madness, boxing day presents/ twixmas presents....

It will just get worse. Shops already peddling "decorate for autumn" closely followed by "spooky season" etc

TBF you could literally use any box or basket or hamper etc

But the PP you were replying to has already said their things get put away in the loft.

Babayagahaha · 11/10/2026 19:16

I'm shocked people get decorations out for October. What bollocks.

All our decorations get out away in the eloft for next year.

Are you taking about the food? Eaten?

We don't buy stuff for the sake of it, certainly not novelty one use items. So they get used or worn or read etc

We don't buy a blanket every year for example, or craft sets that limit creativity.
