Jewish people are nine times more likely than Muslims to be victims of hate crime, according to the latest Home Office data.

The figures reveal that Jewish people faced hate crimes at a rate of 116.5 offences per 10,000 people last year, compared with 13.3 per 10,000 for Muslims.

Official data also show that racially and religiously motivated hate crime recorded by police hit record highs.

Religious hate crimes targeting Jewish people were up by 10 per cent from the year before, to 3,162, while crimes against Muslims rose by 15 per cent, to 5,132.

The latest Home Office data were published a day after a number of arrests were made at protests and demonstrations in London on the third anniversary of the October 7 attacks.

Have you actively said this to Muslims?

Yes it was definitely a theme discussed when Isis was at its height.

England and Wales Census (2021): Recorded 271,327 people identifying as Jewish (or roughly 288,646 when adjusted for non-response).

I remember seeing a comment where somebody said their Jewish child was being harassed at school over Gaza. One response was ‘well what do you expect, it must be very triggering for them to see Muslims being exterminated in this way’.

I asked whether that meant Islamophobia was acceptable after 9/11, they never responded.

Yes I remember that post. Some days the responses were awful on that post. As if harassing and bullying a teenager was ever justified.

Thank you to those who are showing an understanding for how unpleasant it is now. I’m of Jewish heritage and not religious and I don’t agree with what Israel are doing- also don’t agree with a lot of Trump’s actions or the erosion of women’s rights in Afghanistan as well as many other issues across the globe that I could derail the thread with.

However, despite my personal views, my family experience discrimination. Going to your cousin’s funeral and needing to go through security to attend is not something many can relate to, your nephews and nieces taking uniform off to travel by public transport so people can’t tell they attend a Jewish school and verbally and physically abuse them. Surely you can’t think this is ok?

I’ve never been to Israel. I’m not sure how I’m supposed to have any influence over their government- they seem uninterested in the views of a middle aged British woman.

Fairyliz · 09/10/2026 13:41

@Twilightstarbright I am so sorry you have to go through this. I feel a bit helpless but is there anything ordinary people like me can do to help? What would be the best way of showing support for the Jewish community?

"In the last year there were 137,550 suspected hate crime incidents in total recorded by police forces in England and Wales, but less than a tenth result in criminal charges being issued."

Hate crime prosecutions to be fast-tracked after antisemitic attacks

The director of public prosecutions has told prosecutors in England and Wales to bring charges more quickly.

Jewish people need be louder in their condemnation of what is happening in Gaza, or it needs to be reported more if they are being loud about it already.

The problem is, antisemitism is a mutating virus, the ultimate conspiracy theory. From the Islamist-left alliance it has mutated to a hatred of the world’s only Jewish state. @Cheese55’s antisemitic statement, while not overt Nazi grade level is incredibly dangerous as it masks itself as giving a shit about others. It infantilises the Arabs who’ve made is clear what they intend to do to every Jew in Israel if given the chance while accusing BRITISH Jews of sympathising with a foreign government. Why should they condemn? Who are you to point the finger selectively? Moreover, do you know what many Gazans would do to you given the chance? The world observed it on Oct 7th or do Jewish women not count?

2 things can be true at once, October 7th was absolutely a terrible attack no doubt. But....the response is seen by some as disproportionate. That is all. For those of us who don't align with any religion, its not about Islam/Judaism but just about war crimes.

Jews are very accomplished in many areas but statistically you are right. This would be the most bizarre genocide in history if that was the Israel government's intention. I can just about take seriously and accusations of attempt to ethnic clean etc. However claiming genocide is an insult to every genocide that has ever happened and is currently happening. The first time I started seeing people say it was a genocide was 2020 when the pals population was going up at the same rate as Israelis. Things have not really changed that much since then. However the idiots have got more numerous and louder.

What would be “proportionate”? How should Israel protect herself when surrounded by hostile states? One tiny, v successful democracy- the only Jewish state demonised purely because it’s Jewish?

Firstly even asking makes a big difference.

Secondly, I would try to ensure that Jews and Israel are not used interchangeably. It’s Israel carrying out these acts, not Jews across the globe. If you hear someone say it then correct them or ask if they thought all Muslims were responsible for 9/11. I’ve done that myself and it does make the vast majority pause and reframe it in a more accurate way.

There’s a saying of two Jews, three opinions. We don’t all think alike! I’ve already explained my views on the situation and I acknowledge I have Jewish family members who feel differently to me.

No they bloody well don't! Should all British Muslims be louder in their condemnation of the Pakistani grooming gangs? Should British Muslims be louder in their condemnation of the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7th? Why should Jewish people have to answer for something that's out of their control? And why is ONLY EVER JEWS that are expected to condemn their own people?

Was the Afgan and Iraq wars also disproportionate?

It wasn't me but I've had a similar exchange. My then 10 year old daughter was punched kicked and pushed by other kids who made Nazi salutes and told her "go and hide Jew". This week at high school a girl made a Nazi salute in her face while calling her names.

Apparently she should have loudly condemned Israel's actions. Despite the fact she was 10 and then 13 and has never been to Israel (and she's barely been to synagogue)

No they don’t. It is not their responsibility to convince someone not to attack or bully them because of their religion. It’s akin to saying a girl shouldn’t wear short skirts and if she does it’s her fault she gets raped.

also - for the pro Palestine brigade is never enough… look at what happened to Mamdabi last night. He is been the most pro Palestine ever and he got attacked for attending a vigil for the victims of oct 7th.

I don't think I saw people referring to it on MN as a genocide until a couple of days after October 7th. But, they only started referring to it as a genocide then because posts referring to it as a 'Holocaust' kept getting reported and called out for antisemitism.

That they were calling it a Holocaust (deliberately horrible) before Israel went into Gaza post-October 7th has in my mind made it very difficult to disentangle sober assessment from antisemitism on the genocide question.

Not sure about mumsnet but I definitely saw people saying on twitter that Israel was trying to commit genocide. I got my first lot of population statistics graphs which I screenshot from other posters tweeting them in response. Therefore know it was 2020.

Also on the pal march (which was 2020 or 2021) that happened in London after Israel responded to the thousands of rockets that were just fired on them from Gaza there were a few signs saying it was Genocide. That was the march with all the Jews killed Jesus, only good Jew is a dead Jew, Hitler was right ,etc. After that march solidarity for Pals and other organisations started to insist on those pre printed and official signs. Basically the fuckwitts couldn't be trusted to not give the real game away. The general public including London were literally shouting abuse back at those protesters because their racism was on display so obviously. March was horrible but the reaction to it I saw in London had real cable street vibes.
