I followed this story because it was so tragic, but wasn't expecting that 😪

The three sisters, seen as teenagers, and their father sit together at a restaurant table, from left to right, Jane Adetoro, Joseph, Christina Walters and Rebecca Walters.

Three sisters who died in sea off Brighton took own lives, inquest finds

The bodies of Jane Adetoro, Christina Walters and Rebecca Walters were pulled from the water on 13 May.

It's natural that people will read between the lines in such a tragic and extraordinary incident.

I don't think it makes people ghoulish to wonder what drove them to this, if there was anything over and above longstanding grief and PTSD .

Put it this way, there's not much ' Oh that poor father' going on here, like there's a group subconscious thing going on in this thread.

I understand it. I know my dc had same thoughts after suicide of sibling. And as a bereaved mother I get it completely.

I'm so sorry. My daughter's friend killed himself last year and I still sometimes fear she'll try to follow him. I hope your DC are doing OK and that you find peace.

How terribly sad.

I presume they have proof of some kind?

The notion that they'd just go for a swim for fun fully clothed in the middle of the night in unpleasant weather and cold season did seem extremely peculiar.

But that alone doesn't make suicide a certainty. So they must have explored all evidence? I've heard people suggesting others being involved but I don't see how unless they were coerced or bullied into it?

But what a tragic and painful way to die.
RIP to them and their Mum. X

I expect the coroner did “explore all the evidence” ffs.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 08/10/2026 19:45

They could not swim.

They could not swim.

They were not walking out into the sea for a swim 🙄

FookFookFook · 08/10/2026 12:23

hmm. That just doesn’t sit quite right.

The coroner has given the verdict. They took their own lives x

Really? I can't imagine a situation where all three thought that was the best/only thing to do 😪

Maybe some kind of misguided religious belief. The article mentions they had lived secluded lives since their mother's death.

bafta16 · 08/10/2026 20:27

I believe there was evidence that they had been researching how to take their own lives.

Terrible thing.

CuteHANDBAG · 08/10/2026 20:35

I was genuinely shocked when I heard this. I guess respectively, the way it was reported when it happened seemed guarded.
I feel very sad for them and their loved ones.

TheSunIsAlwaysThere · 08/10/2026 20:46

I expected this was the case as soon as I read this first reporting of it. So so sad.

Sewingbeedamned · 08/10/2026 21:00

I had assumed when I heard this that it was a tragic accident. It is unimaginably sad, and I feel for their father so much. To lose one person to suicide is awful beyond belief. To lose 3 is almost impossible to comprehend. How they must have felt has been on my mind all day.

Probably best to stop now and let it go!! It’s verging on bullying.

How is it bullying? They're responding to a poster who got snippy with them?

ThatCosy · 08/10/2026 21:12

It's just a horrible thing. I've been thinking about it a lot and am glad to write that down somewhere.

Two sisters done the same in Aberdeen not so long ago.

Shloopie · 08/10/2026 21:58

Such a sad story. Especially knowing that it had been 16 years since their mum's suicide and I presume their own lives becoming more and more secluded as the years progressed. I wonder what the dynamic among the sisters was. Clearly very enmeshed, and I presume one of the three sisters would have been the more dominant 'leader', with one or both of the others being much more compliant and going along with the suicide plans. Or maybe they were all equally on board with the pact.

That’s right, two Hungarian women from a set of triplets. Heartbreaking

Crowsinarow · 08/10/2026 12:24

But how do they know, it seems it is just a guess..?

Probably because they chose to walk into sea and none of them could swim…

They looked at their computers, and one of the sisters had done lots of searches on suicide and drowning.

Rituelec · 08/10/2026 22:15

So sad :(

Edited

Yes, I saw that.

ProudBlackMomma · 08/10/2026 22:40

Dreadful.

Whitney Spears has given me a good chuckle

CrazyMidget · 08/10/2026 23:04

I knew it was a triple suicide after I learnt that they had gone to the place where their mother drowned not long before, and that they were isolated and had never got over her death. Also that they weren't staying anywhere.

Very sad.

I wonder why Brighton?

CrazyMidget · 08/10/2026 23:12

FookFookFook · 08/10/2026 12:23

hmm. That just doesn’t sit quite right.

You're thinking that they were killed?

CrazyMidget · 08/10/2026 23:15

Busybookworm · 08/10/2026 12:25

Perhaps they left suicide notes or something.

You can tell if someone was alive or not when they went into the water according to something to do with their lungs and the water in them, or not in them. I think there are other signs, too. Like when people drown, something in their throat flaps shut. If they drowned, and there are no injuries, someone would have to have been in the water holding them down.

But as to how they know if someone slipped or did it on purpose, I'm not sure.

CrazyMidget · 08/10/2026 23:18

LowlandLucky · 08/10/2026 12:32

Seemingly they had researched suicide, drownings and places to drown. They had also emptied the flat of personal effects and closed their bank accounts.

God, that's awful.

(Commented above before I read this.)

What a dreadful pity they couldn't have got effective help before resorting to this. So very sad. 😢
