Would you live near a cemetery/graveyard?

Just watched Location and a couple went to view a nice house, but when they saw it had a view of a graveyard they were immediately put off. I personally really like them and find them peaceful and interesting to look at. Would others object?

Old neighbour of ours once did in the late 80's and she was plauged awfully white shouts through the letterbox of 'let me out' and 'who shut the door' from the local hoodlums

I know someone who lived near a cemetery and it was the 'hoodlums' that made her life miserable notvthe permanent residents. Another friend backs on to a cemetery but it's perfectly peaceful apart from the foxes.

You would have to take the surrounding area into account.

This needs a thread all of it's own. Does this not bother you? Do you get strange vibes at all?

There was a murder on our first floor landing too, right outside DS's bedroom -- though far longer ago. No 'vibes' whatsoever.

Good point. The heavily wooded older bit of ours was base camp in the evenings for quite a few local teenagers I think, although to be fair they didn't want to be spotted while smoking and drinking cider.

My bedroom looks out over the village graveyard - it's the first thing I see in the morning and the last thing at night. I love the rooks squonking their bedtime squonks, and then the owls start up. So not always peaceful, but it is strangely comforting. There is still the odd funeral there but never found that a problem. There's been a religious building on the site since the 8th Century and the sense of permanence is quite reassuring in a world where nothing stays the same for long.

Lived across the road from an active graveyard when I was a kid, my best friend in high school lived next to an old graveyard (her father was a minister so lived in the rectory) and lived less than 200m from another active one as a young adult.

Would happily live next to one again.

It definitely wouldn't put me off! I'm a Psychic Medium and graveyards are some of the least haunted places around - I find them really peaceful and grounding. If you think about it, would you really want to hang around your decomposing body for all eternity or would you rather spend time being around your loved ones who are still here?! 😉

We've had two suicides in the stairwell of my block of flats in the last year. No funny vibes at all.
A woman died in my bedroom before I moved in.

Wouldnt put me off, i would love it!
I find graveyards very peaceful.

AshCullen1894 · 08/10/2026 16:33

I absolutely would. Someone to talk to who can't run away for a start.

Love a graveyard - peaceful and such a haven for wildlife. For many years I had an office overlooking a graveyard - it was endlessly fascinating.

MyDogHumpsThings · 08/10/2026 16:55

I absolutely would buy a house next to a graveyard! The best neighbours are dead ones :-)

Blingismything · 08/10/2026 21:23

Yes, I have lived opposite a church with a graveyard. No problem with it. Grew used to the church clock striking every 15 minutes.

Missey85 · 08/10/2026 21:27

I did live across the street from one 😊 it didn't bother me it was mostly quite

A woman died in my bedroom too she was the last owner

I'd love it unless the church bells were ringing hourly then it's a no from me.

Lastofthesummerwines · 08/10/2026 21:33

I used to live in a flat opposite a graveyard - the church had been knocked down. Never even considered it an issue. Ever. The living caused more issues on the graveyard than the dead. The alcoholics congregating at all hours .
Tbf in the 7 years I lived there we saw everything going on . The locals even had a fun day with a bouncy castle and a BBq over there . I couldn't believe my eyes when I looked out and saw everyone dancing to ABBA.

I would rather live amongst the dead than some of the folk that are walking about today.

Pyjamatimenow · 08/10/2026 21:37

We lived opposite one. It didn’t bother me at the time of buying but then the house turned out to be haunted so we had to move anyway. Not sure the haunting was to do with the graveyard though.

BCBird · 08/10/2026 21:42

Yes. Better than near a pub. Also u know what the view will be. It will not be sold to developers

HoneyButterPopcorn · 08/10/2026 21:43

I’d be fine - but I’d always hear my dad joking ‘oh it’s the dead centre of town’ and ‘it’s dead quiet around here’. Otherwise it wouldn’t bother me.

My husband trots those out too. “People are dying to get in there”

TheEasterPangolin · 08/10/2026 21:48

Not one that’s in use as I’d not want to be seeing lots of distressed people following coffins. An old one absolutely. As a kid I’m told our DPs took us to look round a beautiful old house backing onto the graveyard of the village church. Apparantly I was so distraught they didn’t put an offer in. I used the avoid walking over the flat gravestones inside churches and cathedrals as I was totally convinced I would ‘catch death’ from them. Now, I enjoy looking around cemeteries and reading the inscriptions and saying the names out loud so they’re remembered. I’d not live in a converted chapel because of heating costs.

PDAblues · 08/10/2026 22:52

I would.

roshi42 · 08/10/2026 23:02

It would be a draw for me! I find them peaceful and interesting places, with lots of lovely green, good for nature and birds. And it would be quiet.
