Would you live near a cemetery/graveyard?

Just watched Location and a couple went to view a nice house, but when they saw it had a view of a graveyard they were immediately put off. I personally really like them and find them peaceful and interesting to look at. Would others object?

Why not?

travailtotravel · 07/10/2026 22:14

I grew up.in a vicarage next to a graveyard. Not an issue for me!

LandSsmum · 07/10/2026 22:15

Quiet neighbours. What's the issue?

Growlybear83 · 07/10/2026 22:15

I lived opposite a cemetery for several years. It was quite picturesque and very leafy, and it was much nicer to look out over it than have houses opposite.

Cattenberg · 07/10/2026 22:16

Not too near. Didn't living next to a cemetery make the Brontes ill?

Tiddlywinkly · 07/10/2026 22:19

I lived next to one of the biggest cemeteries in Europe. I really didn't mind. Lovely and peaceful. I actually discovered my great great grandfather is buried there, along with other relatives.

It provided a nice place to go with an unhappy crying first baby. I want to be buried there eventually.

tealpanda49 · 07/10/2026 22:20

I specifically didn't put an offer on the house as you could see a graveyard from the front garden. No thank you

Glitchymn1 · 07/10/2026 22:22

Yes I would, peaceful! Don’t fear the dead, fear the living.

JustChillin70 · 07/10/2026 22:22

We live opposite a village one. Lovely and quiet and no chance anyone ever building on it. Doesn’t bother us in the slightest

BebbanburgIsMine · 07/10/2026 22:24

Yes, I grew up in a house that directly looked over a graveyard, my brother used to tell me that the skeletons would come and get me.

I’ve moved around the UK a bit since then, now back living in the same area and still very close to it, but not overlooking it the same.

The garden wall of DD’s first house was also the cemetery wall, so no, it doesn’t bother me at all.

The skeletons still haven’t got me!

Lindy2 · 07/10/2026 22:25

I do live next to a graveyard.

It's peaceful. It's particularly beautiful in Spring with crocuses and daffodils everywhere but it's pretty all year around. There are deer, squirrels, badgers, bats and birds.

Some of it is very old. There is also a newer section where burials still take place. I'm closest to the new part. It doesn't bother me at all. A dear friend is buried there.

It won't be built on. Luckily there's not been any trouble from undesirables there and I've been here 25 years now. Not a single ghosty has been seen either.

spiderlight · 07/10/2026 22:25

Yes, I would. I find them very peaceful and fascinating places and you'd never have noisy neighbours!

RhannionKPSS · 07/10/2026 22:31

Yes, lived directly opposite a lovely , very old church and graveyard for many years. It has ghost tours but we never saw anything odd. It was quiet, lovely trees, birds and when it snowed we could build snowmen and do snow angels.

MilkBreadToiletroll · 07/10/2026 22:35

I enjoy a nice quiet walk around our local cemetery. Wouldn't bother me at all.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/10/2026 22:38

Quiet. Unlikely to build on it

win win

Hollyhobbi · 07/10/2026 22:39

Yes. As my late dad used to say, it’s wiser to be afraid of the living than the dead!

Hatty65 · 07/10/2026 22:40

Ideal neighbours, surely?

Happy to live next to anyone who doesn't play loud music or disturb me in any way.

Our water supply is safer now!

Franxi · 07/10/2026 22:42

I love it. But, my cricket bat is wearing out and my record collection is taking a hit having to fight off all the zombies.

ExhaustedPigeon · 07/10/2026 22:44

I do. The neighbours are dead quiet! It's great - peaceful, developers can't build next to us and nice green areas. There are a mix of old and new graves.

This absolutely…..it’s the living that will hurt you, not the dead x

1dayatatime · 07/10/2026 22:44

As a previous poster said they are unlikely to be built on and are great for urban wildlife sanctuaries.

CuriousDaisy · 07/10/2026 22:45

Hecksonaplane · 07/10/2026 21:53

Yes for the very same reason as pp, it’s quiet and peaceful. I wouldn’t expect it to be built on either what’s not to like

I remember being told this when looking round houses. There are rules around building in consecrated ground so you won’t have any surprise big developments near you! Better a cemetery than a field that suddenly gets turned into a block of flats for your view!

99doubledeckerbuses · 07/10/2026 23:57

I have a graveyard at the end of my garden. It's an overspill from the main church up the road but even then it's been closed to new graves for many years. It's only ever busy if there is a family burial or on Remembrance day as there are some WW1/WW2 Commonwealth War graves there.

It's an oasis of calm. In the summer I can sit in my garden and hear the nature. We also have 'foxy' as my kids have nicknamed her- we think she lives in the graveyard and each spring brings her cubs to the garden. We also like birdwatching and get lots of different birds on the feeders. And the neighbours aren't exactly noisy either. No all night parties with music blaring.

Downsides are mainly the wildlife but not in the way you think. I've given up trying to grow any fruit trees in the garden because the deer get to them before they grow or fruit. Foxes from late December/Jan- March can also be surprisingly noisy when they are having......... fun time. Hot tip- female foxes attracting a mate have a call that sounds remarkably similar to either a child or a female in distress. We are used to it now but the first time I heard it, I thought someone needed help.

OchreReader · 07/10/2026 23:59

Wouldn’t bother me in the slightest. I used to be jealous of the cemetery keeper’s house because I thought it looked so quiet and peaceful
