Would you live near a cemetery/graveyard?

Just watched Location and a couple went to view a nice house, but when they saw it had a view of a graveyard they were immediately put off. I personally really like them and find them peaceful and interesting to look at. Would others object?

I've got one at the end of my close - the residents have never given me any bother, didn't even cross my mind that it would be an issue when I was buying the place!

AbsintheMakesTheHeartGrowFonder · 08/10/2026 12:13

It's my absolute dream to live in a house that overlooks a graveyard! Gorgeous.

Whattheduck · 08/10/2026 12:19

My dream house would be a converted church overlooking a graveyard
One of my colleagues lives in a vicarage which overlooks a graveyard in fact my family graves are at the side of his garden

CoastalCalm · 08/10/2026 12:22

I did for a decade , couldn’t see it when downstairs as had a lovely high wall at the back of the garden but even upstairs it didn’t bother me at all - it was the old part though so no active burials going on. Only issue was some anti social behaviour by kids during the summer but they soon got moved on

Annualsouptime · 08/10/2026 12:24

I was looking at lodge at the entry of cemetery. Would have the best halloween parties with all the ghosts. And wuiet neigbour. What's not to like.
Sadly, it was over budget😕 and dh was not into it as much

Itslikesowhatever · 08/10/2026 12:25

Yes I had one at the back of my house I didn’t mind at all was peaceful.

Gettingbysomehow · 08/10/2026 12:26

Yes about that. I used to live down hill and right next to one and when it rained really hard water would run off from the graveyard into my garden.
I really did not like the idea of corpse water near or in my house. Mind you my roses and dahlias were epic but I did wonder about the bacteria coming from the graveyard. Ive moved now.
There was a big rat problem too.

hoftlatch · 08/10/2026 12:48

If it was an active cemetery, probably not. I wouldn’t like to see hearses arriving and graveside services being held as it would probably make me feel sad and remember some of my own losses.

If it was an old churchyard, then no problems at all - they’re often interesting and quirky (and some of the inscriptions on the headstones are fascinating).

Misshollys · 08/10/2026 12:50

My mam grew up opposite a graveyard and always told us it wasn't the people inside the graveyard we'd ever have to worry about hurting us.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 08/10/2026 13:06

A cemetery wouldn’t worry me (though I would check if there are drug or other anti-social behaviour problems in it). What would concern me would be the possibility of chancel repair liability for a church graveyard. I think that there’s been some legislation designed to stop this being a problem, but I’d double check this.

Additup · 08/10/2026 13:08

A graveyard next to a house would be a plus in my opinion. Nice and quiet and graveyards are also a haven for wildlife 🙂

MimiGC · 08/10/2026 13:35

I wouldn’t mind an old graveyard at all, but I think I would find it depressing if I could see actual funerals taking place.

Ponderingwindow · 08/10/2026 13:40

the concept doesn’t bother me. The post-mortem treatments of bodies and the coffins themselves leaching into the ground and potentially creating an environmental problem would worry me. I would need to research the era of the particular graveyard to determine the environmental impact and if I wanted to live next door.

omghereistrouble · 08/10/2026 13:50

would not bother me i live in a place where a lady was murdered in the bedroom less than 12 months ago

Julynian · 08/10/2026 13:54

If it was active/open then I might feel weird looking out of my bedroom window to see a burial service taking place, so I don’t think I would go for that.
I actually love looking out over a closed graveyard. No new burials for just over 100 years. It’s growing over as a nature reserve now. It’s such a peaceful place. I enjoy walking around there with my dog on our walkies, it’s nice to read the old names and wonder what the people were like, what their lives were like.

Spaniels4Eva · 08/10/2026 13:56

It wouldn't bother me at all. I love wandering round old churchyards and reading headstones.

littlemousebigcheese · 08/10/2026 14:00

Yes I think they are beautiful and places where people were loved so much, graves and stones are made to remember them forever

Phoenix1Arisen · 08/10/2026 14:02

I know how I felt and still feel about the deaths of my mum and sister in these past few years.

To me, cemeteries are places brimming over with love.

DoAWheelie · 08/10/2026 14:05

I'd have said yes up until a couple of years ago. I've never found them spooky or scary, usually just peaceful.

But after my late OH died I find I can't look at anything like graveyards or crematoriums or funeral homes without thinking about him and those first few weeks.

I don't think it would be healthy to have such an obvious reminder staring me in the face every time I look out my own window. Keeping myself busy and distracted is the only way I've gotten through this so far.

This needs a thread all of it's own. Does this not bother you? Do you get strange vibes at all?

omghereistrouble · 08/10/2026 14:15

well it was a domestic violence murder which makes it odd as moving here i managed to escape domestic violence eventually
i feel like i have seen and felt her perhaps she wants me to not give in and take him back like she did.
10 people came to see this bungalow but turned it down but i walked in wanted it straight away
it was a very very brutal murder but he had hurt her before they moved her here to get away from him but when he came out of prison for hitting her she took him straight back

Topseyt123 · 08/10/2026 14:16

Nearby is fine for me, but probably not directly overlooking, especially if it is a cemetery that is still in use.

In our small town you would never be more than about 10 minutes walk from ours and it is beautifully kept. Very peaceful. There aren't many houses directly overlooking the "in use" parts of it as they are now spreading out into surrounding fields that have been purchased for it as the original cemetery ran low on space.

NoisyMonster678 · 08/10/2026 14:27

Yeah!

Uricon2 · 08/10/2026 14:36

I have lived opposite 'the old bit' of the local cemetery and years earlier a chapel where the graveyard wall was the boundary with our garden. Both lovely, peaceful and atmospheric.

CountDracula · 08/10/2026 14:38

Live near one? I live IN one!
