What food do you avoid ordering when out of the home, because you make better at home?

What do you not order when you go out to eat as you know you'll make a better version yourself and therefore pick something else?

Mine is banana loaf, nothing flash but mine is better than coffee shop version.

@teardropsrunning No they aren’t all stuffy at all! I Also recommend The Good food guide. I do like the highest level of cooking for my money. Basic food doesn’t interest me if I’m going out. I don’t see it as a treat - in the sense of the food. I do in terms of not cooking and being with friends. DH and I never choose pizza and pasta restaurants for just us.

Well actually they are a bit stuffy - some aren't and sometimes it depends on the night.
I am more interested in fun and variety of experience - sometimes that's fine dining, sometimes that's a burger van in a field, in the middle of nowhere - it's all great food! Your money - you eat where you like - I just find your disbelief that others have a different opinion to you quite something!

Why is everyone ordering pizza and pasta when they are out? Go once a year and have something far better! Thats a real treat.

I don't want to only go once a year, I love eating out, there's far more to it than just the food. Will happily go somewhere that does a good pizza from time to time.

Pasta, Indian curries, Spanish food and deserts.

I always make my own pasta sauce, and often the pasta, and never buy curry in a jar/take away.

My banana bread is also superb, and easy to make. I hate the commercial bought one - it's flour heavy and barely tastes of banana.

Just returned from a short break and we had two meals out both of which were incredibly disappointing. You could serve me the most amazing food but if you accompany it with reheated roast potatoes or reheated sauté potatoes I would never return. How difficult is it to do either. Such laziness and cheap skating. .

pinkishtongue · 06/10/2026 11:21

Lasagne. Never had a pub one that was as good as mine.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 06/10/2026 11:41

@Fiddlesticks1 But a top class restaurant would never do that would they? Just inconceivable. Why not go out less but go better?

DiNozzoComingBack · 06/10/2026 11:46

Steak. I cook excellent steak and when you order in a restaurant it's always so expensive and almost always less good than I make. even in "proper" steak restaurants.

I am also on board with the scone thing. I never understand why scones are so often bad. they take 12 minute to bake in the oven. They go stale very quickly. if you are a cafe serving cream teas, there is NO excuse to make the scones at 6am and then still be serving them at 4pm. Just do the dough at 6 am and do a new batch every hour.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 06/10/2026 11:53

@DiNozzoComingBack Err? They buy them in from a bakery! You think they batch bake every hour? Definitely not,

pinkspeakers · 06/10/2026 11:57

I generally prefer my own risotto . Also rarely order pasta as can also make that well enough at home.

I often order fish when I'm out (but not boring salmon). Or the kind of meat I wouldn't have at home eg types of game. I also like meals where you have lots of different dishes and share as that's a lot of work to recreate at home. And Asian foods, which I generally don't know how to make really authentically or can't easily get ingredients.

They should!

@DilemmaDelilah Most cafes selling cream teas don’t have extensive baking or cooking facilities. It’s that simple. The lovely teas in London hotels obviously can and probably do but smaller cafes get a delivery along with their bread and other baked goods, eg cinnamon buns, croissants etc.

DilemmaDelilah · 07/10/2026 07:57

@MeetMeOnTheCorner I don't think that was meant for me! I don't like cream teas, I dislike both scones and cream, and I'm not that keen on jam unless it is my home-made plum, or hedgerow jelly.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 07/10/2026 13:17

@DilemmaDelilah Oops no! It wasn’t. See thread - my mistake. The best restaurants do make their own jam by the way, if they are serving it. They make everything from scratch. That’s what you pay for.
