What food do you avoid ordering when out of the home, because you make better at home?

What do you not order when you go out to eat as you know you'll make a better version yourself and therefore pick something else?

Mine is banana loaf, nothing flash but mine is better than coffee shop version.

I dont tend to order pasta or risotto as I cook that better and they are simple.

I definitely like ordering thing i wouldn't bother to make at home as they are too fiddly, or things no one else likes, like fish.

I often order roast beef out because I am shit at cooking beef. I can never get it right and some of the pubs here do nice roast beef

Crikeyalmighty · 04/10/2026 15:38

got to be Sunday roasts

Borgonzola · 04/10/2026 15:42

Crumble!

I doubt it. They probably have an over-inflated view of their own cooking ability or are very picky about how they want something done, or don't have very good places to eat near them. There are a lot of mediocre to poor places to eat in the UK. I'm a very good cook but don't flatter myself that a decent pub or restaurant with a proper chef, can't match or better me on most of the dishes I would make at home.

Edited

Well I suppose we all look at things differently.

But I don't think it's an over-inflated view really if they've just never tasted one or two dishes cooked better than they can.

Even 'proper chefs' can't do everything to the same standards as everyone in the world.

Some dishes yes, and others not so much maybe.

I agree and it's also down to people's personal taste.

Steak! It’s rarely seasoned properly and is never left to rest so it’s often too tough - even the tender cuts.

Exactly.

Even chefs and food critics don't agree on everything so why would consumers.

Macaroni cheese - mine is superior to anything I’ve ever had not at home

What is your secret?

Yeah I would never order bolognese or bacon sandwich I am so fussy and mine are chefs kiss for me anyway!

I love ordering fajitas as although I make them at home I don’t do all the trimmings or serve them sizzling, so that’s usually a treat

we also don’t tend to make Thai food at home so a really good nasi goreng or green curry is a must order when out

Nasi goreng isn’t Thai food

IzzyGone · 04/10/2026 16:01

EmpressStorm

I want to have both, Id rather have both or no go out. Sometimes we just arrange to go to someones house and get a takeaway from somewhere we know is good, or we all bring components of a meal ourselves - as its the social element not just the food

I begrudge paying £35 a head for mediocre dinner for one consisting of a drink and a main course

I tend to avoid some places rather than dishes.

If in a nice pub I would go for what I think they would do regularly and well.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 04/10/2026 16:16

Scrambled eggs. I have recently had very good scrambled eggs in a guest house, but mostly I don't risk it. Also tea. It's rarely as good as I'd make at home.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 04/10/2026 16:30

I'm another person who will eat anything that someone else is cooking and washing up after.

I live alone and get utterly sick to death of having to think about food - what I've got in, what I can be bothered to cook, what do I feel like. So it's fabulous to look at a menu and think 'what do I feel like' and then have it brought to me.

Koulibiak · 04/10/2026 16:31

I’m usually attracted by dishes that I find stressful to make for many people at a time (e.g. steak), or dishes that rely on ingredients that are difficult to source (some fresh fish, sweetbreads, pepper soup, snails, lobster, Japanese omakase dishes). Or dishes that I never cook at home (e.g crème brûlée, choux pastry, steak tartare). Or an amazing cheese platter because I never have that many cheeses at home at the same time.

I find most Indian food in restaurants very oily, crude and not well balanced. I would never order a roast, jacket potato or fish and chips, as I find them really boring/too fat. I usually only order pasta in Italy or in very good restaurants such as Murano. Also many desserts - tiramisu, carrot cake, banana bread and many others, because I’m a decent baker. And various things like pissaladière, gravlax, ice cream, sichuan hot pot, I just generally prefer my own recipes which have been perfected over time.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 04/10/2026 16:33

Lots of generic puddings. For context, im coeliac so restricted choice anyway. We were out last week, nice fusiony type of place, puds were churros, ice creams, pavlova or the ubiquitous brownie. Rather have another cocktail.
Other, if proper gf pizza is on the menu(not a bought in cardboard base)I'll snatch your hand off.

EverardDeTroyes · 04/10/2026 16:34

Tiramisu. I have a recipe for the genuine article from an Italian nonna and, although some tiramisu can be delicious, it often falls short of mine.

I rarely come across a cake better than I can bake either but that doesn't stop me eating any handmade cake on offer.

Roast dinner

LizandDerekGoals · 04/10/2026 16:36

Paella. My dh‘s is the best. Usually. Last night he forgot the lemon…

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 04/10/2026 16:39

DH does lovely home made pizzas, steak and risotto, also his roast potatoes are the best. So I don’t often order those things out. I tend to go for seafood when out.

I don’t eat at places that cook bad food.

No one said where the food is bad

Coconutter24 · 04/10/2026 16:41

I never order a roast chicken dinner because it’s so easy to do

Gertlushthatis · 04/10/2026 16:41

helpfulperson · 04/10/2026 13:35

Risotto is the one thing I will always eat when out because I don't have the patience to make at home.

Do it in the pressure cooker. It's so easy. No tedious stirring.

Gertlushthatis · 04/10/2026 16:43

My dc have allergies so I always just order whatever we can't have as a family meal. Usually it is something creamy with a ton of cheese.

I know it’s Indonesian but plenty of Thai restaurants offer it and it’s delicious
