What food do you avoid ordering when out of the home, because you make better at home?

What do you not order when you go out to eat as you know you'll make a better version yourself and therefore pick something else?

Mine is banana loaf, nothing flash but mine is better than coffee shop version.

I don't get this mindset at all. And you're not alone in your way of thinking op. For me it's not just about the food, it's a social occassion, having someone cook for me,. I don't give a shit about what I can do at home

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 04/10/2026 13:32

Lasagne, Spaghetti Bolognaise, Risotto, usually soup unless it says it’s home made.

friedaklein · 04/10/2026 13:33

Almost all Indian and Thai food.

CharlieWeasleysWife · 04/10/2026 13:34

Roast dinner

SENsupportplease · 04/10/2026 13:34

I think this way, I want something that I can’t easily do for myself / get at home

My husband regularly makes amazing steak so I don’t often order that, but I can never be bothered making Eggs Benedict, so I usually order that.

I make a great lasagne so never order it, I can’t be bothered making carbonara so will order that.

ACupOfVintage · 04/10/2026 13:35

I make most things better than what I’d be served outside unless it was a top notch restaurant I was in.

Risotto is the one thing I will always eat when out because I don't have the patience to make at home.

SENsupportplease · 04/10/2026 13:35

Makes it more of a treat

GandTtwice · 04/10/2026 13:35

Roast dinner, the roast potatoes are never as good.
I prefer to get something I'd never do at home to make it more of a treat

KrooopJarn · 04/10/2026 13:35

I don’t eat at places that cook bad food.

Pickledonion1999 · 04/10/2026 13:35

Most things really. The only meals my dh can't cook better is Indian food. Even his pizzas are better than restaurant ones costing £17 each. My dh cooks lovely Thai and mexican food and restaurants never compare.

You’ve explained it really well.

SilenceInside · 04/10/2026 13:36

Pasta, lasagne, risotto, soup for me as well.

The point is that if I’m paying someone to cook food for me, it needs to be better or different to what I would do for myself. Otherwise I’m just a bit underwhelmed and disappointed.

But the OP is still doing all of that, she's just avoiding dishes that won't be as nice as when she cooks them herself.

For me it's normally a roast dinner as my own are legendary 😁

Roast dinner

This👆Am always spectacularly disappointed if I have a roast lunch out !

Well no, why would you?

However, it's got nothing to do with the OP's question.

HikingHippo · 04/10/2026 13:38

Burgers.

Im vegan, and I quite enjoy a Beyond or Moving Mountains burger, but I can also buy them in Sainsburys for 3 quid for 2 rather than paying 15-20 quid for one in a bun with some fries. I think its the principle of those more than anything for me.

SunnyRandal · 04/10/2026 13:39

I think it's more that I like to order something I don't do well at home or that I wouldn't cook because it's only me who likes it.
So I'm rubbish at curry but I do a good steak so I'd order curry. DH loves fish but I rarely cook it as I don't like it so he'll always order fish.

This, and it's just me at home now and I don't like cooking for myself.

Simonjt · 04/10/2026 13:42

Any South Asian food, its really poor in the west.

CoastalCalm · 04/10/2026 13:43

Pasta dishes usually not only can I make better but for a fraction of the cost too

AtleastitsnotMonday · 04/10/2026 13:44

A bacon sandwich. It’s not that I necessarily make it better, but I make it how I like it. I don’t like butter in a bacon sandwich, I don’t like the fat, so use medallions and I like it nice and crispy.
I also prefer my lasagne, spaghetti bolognaise and roast.
Quite often I think I make a better salad too.

ThreadGuardDog · 04/10/2026 13:45

Specifically because l make it better myself ? Anything called ‘bolognese’. MiL was from Northern Italy and taught me how to make a proper traditional Ragu Alla Bolognese and even though l know I’m boasting, what most places call a bolognese doesn’t come close. And they always serve it with the wrong pasta.

CherryKerry · 04/10/2026 13:47

I don't chose things I make at home, much prefer to eat something out of my norm when eating out.

E g I would pick a roast dinner with all the trimmings as I can't be arsed with that many dishes and mess at home!

endofthecorridoor · 04/10/2026 13:48

Italian types of food. Pasta especially
