What food do you avoid ordering when out of the home, because you make better at home?

What do you not order when you go out to eat as you know you'll make a better version yourself and therefore pick something else?

Mine is banana loaf, nothing flash but mine is better than coffee shop version.

I don't ever order a roast dinner, lasagne, Christmas cake or any type of pie as it's normally a casserole with a lid.
I do order a fry up, eggs royale, tiramisu, as either I can't be bothered with all the separate bits or I'm the only one that likes it so it would be a waste to make at home.

We’re foodies. We stopped eating out as we cook better or as good at home and can’t afford the fancier places where we’d enjoy the food.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 04/10/2026 16:54

Lasagne. Its always a ready meal thing. Not a patch on my homemade.

vitahelp · 04/10/2026 16:56

Pizza. I would only order it in one restaurant in my DH hometown.

SpottyAlpaca · 04/10/2026 16:57

Steak.

DP buys & cooks steaks which are better than almost all restaurants, and certainly on a completely different level to chain steakhouses. Hawksmoor might be able to compete, but apart from that, his are better.

happygertie · 04/10/2026 16:58

Lasagna, always disappointing in a restaurant but I love home made version

Nayone · 04/10/2026 16:59

chickpeas curries

Jaxhog · 04/10/2026 17:17

Soups. I love soup, but have a problem with celery. I'm not 'deathly' allergic, but get mighty sick if there's more than a certain amount in it, so don't order soup anymore. Same with sauces, although they're easier to leave. I also avoid green salads for the same reason, unless the server is absolutely certain there is no celery there.

Otherwise I avoid scrambled eggs, as my DH is a master at making them.

BugJuice · 04/10/2026 17:20

Steak or a roast dinner. My husband has them perfected, so I’m not paying £20+ for a shit one.

F63C · 04/10/2026 17:21

Anything fried. I can't bear seed oils. Butter, ghee, beef fat and lard here.

mtobrokeme · 04/10/2026 17:23

There are quite a few things that I make better than the ones I have had when eating out. But, I will still order them if I fancy them because it’s not about mine being better it’s about me not having to arse around making them! I can make beautiful and extravagant birthday cakes! Have I ever made one for a family member? No, because it would involve me bugger around to make it! I want to make life easier for myself not harder!

Maybe it’s different for me because my husband does most of the cooking, so I’d rather have a good roast cooked by him than a mediocre one cooked in a restaurant!

Ah maybe that’s the thing! I don’t like really like roasts so I wouldn’t have one at home or anywhere else! I do make a fabulous Christmas dinner though and I definitely wouldn’t go out, despite it being a ball ache so I suppose there is that!

Thatsillymama · 04/10/2026 17:48

Irish stew, steak and guinness pie, rhubarb tart, lemon meringue pie and toffee bonoffee. My grandmother's recipes and I've never tasted any that were better.

MrsBeltane · 04/10/2026 17:49

Steak or chicken.

mrsm43s · 04/10/2026 17:55

I'd imagine most people can cook better than the generic Brakes stuff served in most low end chain restaurants. I think its a little arrogant for people to think they consistently cook better than highly trained Michelin chefs and the like though.

KrooopJarn · 04/10/2026 13:35

I don’t eat at places that cook bad food.

Sadly, I've been to plenty of highly rated restaurants with great reviews only to be underwhelmed by the food

There are quite a lot of restaurants that fall in between low end chains and Michelin starred restaurants though, and that’s probably the sort of restaurant people are referring to in this thread.
We have a lot of ‘nice’ restaurants near us. Not Michelin starred, but a few that are in the Michelin guide and a few that are just locally very well regarded. They serve lovely, freshly cooked food and I enjoy visiting them. However there are still a few things that I wouldn’t choose to order when eating there, because I know that I’ll probably find it disappointing compared to what my husband cooks at home.

Definitely can't cook better than a Michelin star chef.
Few of those make good dosas though, which we all like.

How lovely that you can afford only to ever eat out in Michelin starred restaurants!

I don’t have data to back this up, but I would guess most of us alternate between high end and high street/pub meals. Hence this thread.

Having said that, I’ve many a time paid a lot of money for a meal only to find myself disappointed that they don’t actually know how to make a dish I ordered. Or, in one infamous case, in a two-Michelin-star restaurant, find a curly black hair on top of my food.

Please show me where I said that? I'm just pointing out how arrogant (and frankly deluded) people are who say they cook better than all restaurant food.

In general, the chains with their bulk premade frozen food aren't hard to beat. But most people absolutely can't cook better than trained chefs (and often ethic chefs who have grown up cooking ethnic dishes).

I don’t eat in places that serve bulk made frozen stuff, because it’s not worth the money to me. As I said though, there are many restaurants that fall in between that and Michelin starred restaurants.
And actually, I’d say there are a number of foods that can be cooked better by an individual at home in their kitchen than by a good trained chef in a restaurant, as restaurants are producing dishes in large quantities, usually under pressure. More time and care can be taken at home.

florenceandthemac · 04/10/2026 18:51

I probably order seafood 90% of the times I eat out for lunch/evening meal as my DH doesn’t eat it so I don’t have it at home as much as I’d like, and if I do it’s not cooked as good

HavingABlether · 04/10/2026 18:57

Tea. I easily get through 15-20 a day at home, and it's never the same outside. I barely trust anyone to make tea just the way I like it. If I'm eating out, I'll get a soft drink.

Posypear · 04/10/2026 19:20

@princesspadam do you have a recipe you could share? Mine is awful when I make it !
