Crisis What Crisis? Is my friend over doing the stockpiling and am I too? Continuation thread (2)

Continuation of the AIBU to think my friend is overdoing emergency stockpiling thread for discussion about the government advice to stockpile for an imminent emergency and what the heck that emergency might actually be.

I'm moving it over to chat from AIBU as it makes a bit more sense to be there at this point.

Spoiler: it's more of a perfect storm of lots of factors coming together to potentially form one great clusterfuck from economic woes, global energy shortages (mainly diesel), potential food shortages, war and madmen to crazy weather patterns rather than a clear identifiable singular thread.

This is a practical thread and a bit of a handhold thread to make sense of events and how they may affect you. This is not an end of the world thread.

We are however going through a period where various governments throughout Europe think there is an elevated risk of some kind of problem due to global instability and we should start to get our heads around the possibility of needing to be ready for anything.

Remember an emergency can range from a temporary unexpected event to a much longer crisis but the underlying principles generally stay the same.

So this is for everything from tips and considerations about what might be a good idea to do /save minimise potential risks to just straight old political bollocks talk about how things are developing.

This is the official government information and advice, if you want further details on what the actual recommendations are:
https://prepare.campaign.gov.uk/get-prepared-for-emergencies/

This does actually explicitly say to write a personalised plan for your household which everyone knows and understands and to talk about the issues you may face to help you be able mobilise for any situation which might arise. Which is exactly what this thread is ultimately for.

Get prepared for emergencies - Prepare

How to get informed and put a plan in place to prepare if an emergency comes to you in your area.

I’m still here keep reading your posts.

diesel dropped another 3p locally. Which seems odd considering all the news of refinery issues plus actually getting it here.

How much was it before?

The government getting Google to put prices on Google maps might have meant an equalisation of prices in certain places.

Cheapest is now 194.9 most expensive 201.9.

The other day the cheapest was 199.9.

Zelenskyy at Downing Street. Burnham hugs him. And lays on a ceremonial guard of honour (never been done before for a foreign leader). Zelenskyy nods to the crowd and waves and burst into spontaneous applause and cheers.

Another lurker who is thankful for all your information.

Our local petrol station was completely out of diesel today. They couldn’t/wouldn’t say when the next delivery is due.

It does seem like the build up to Covid when I knew the shit was about to hit the fan, but the world around me seemed oblivious.

Meloni: I do not miss the Russian tanks in Prague and Budapest. I do not miss the Berlin Wall.

If Ukraine stopped defending itself tomorrow, Russia would occupy a European nation and Soviet-style imperialism would return.

Surrender is not peace. It is conquest.

Meloni: Unable to advance on the front, Russia is trying to break Ukrainians through terror, cold and darkness.

They are hitting power plants, apartment buildings, hospitals and buses.

Moscow gained little ground this year and lost much of its recent gains in September.

Meloni: What happens in Ukraine does not stay in Ukraine.

Russian hybrid warfare now includes drones over European airports and bases, damaged Baltic cables, cyberattacks, railway sabotage, disinformation, election interference and migrants used as pressure.

Yes THAT Meloni.

Edited

Derail: I know he has his detractors (and some of them probably have a point) but to me, Zelenskyy is a true patriot.

He could have left and had a very nice life elsewhere. He could have sucked up to the US, sold Ukraine down the river and still been fine himself. But he won’t, presumably because he cares about his country.

I think an awful lot of people simply don’t pay attention to the news.

Why has the Director of the FBI gone on a jolly to Moscow and St Petersburg with the FBS as hosts?

Correction on this. A lot of accounts were sharing this information.

Reuters are now saying Kash Patel was in Virginia, not Russia.

The bureau denied an MS NOW report that its director flew to Moscow for FSB hosted meetings. Footage from an ABC affiliate shows Patel at a Lynchburg event the same day.

I am also worried about my children. We are planning university etc at the moment.

Yes I am worried for the teens too. They already had covid lockdowns to deal with.
We've been doing the last of the open days for dd who is in year 13. She wants to do a very rural themed course.

Of her two fav Unis, one is 80 mins drive, but the fav is 5 hours drive or 7 hours on a convoluted train journey. Depending on how things develop I might start suggesting the nearer one, I want to be able to retrieve her to the family home ASAP if things get bad.
