Crisis What Crisis? Is my friend over doing the stockpiling and am I too? Continuation thread (2)

Continuation of the AIBU to think my friend is overdoing emergency stockpiling thread for discussion about the government advice to stockpile for an imminent emergency and what the heck that emergency might actually be.

I'm moving it over to chat from AIBU as it makes a bit more sense to be there at this point.

Previous thread
https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/5576816-aibu-to-think-my-friend-is-overdoing-emergency-stockpiling?page=1

Spoiler: it's more of a perfect storm of lots of factors coming together to potentially form one great clusterfuck from economic woes, global energy shortages (mainly diesel), potential food shortages, war and madmen to crazy weather patterns rather than a clear identifiable singular thread.

This is a practical thread and a bit of a handhold thread to make sense of events and how they may affect you. This is not an end of the world thread.

We are however going through a period where various governments throughout Europe think there is an elevated risk of some kind of problem due to global instability and we should start to get our heads around the possibility of needing to be ready for anything.

Remember an emergency can range from a temporary unexpected event to a much longer crisis but the underlying principles generally stay the same.

So this is for everything from tips and considerations about what might be a good idea to do /save minimise potential risks to just straight old political bollocks talk about how things are developing.

This is the official government information and advice, if you want further details on what the actual recommendations are:
https://prepare.campaign.gov.uk/get-prepared-for-emergencies/

This does actually explicitly say to write a personalised plan for your household which everyone knows and understands and to talk about the issues you may face to help you be able mobilise for any situation which might arise. Which is exactly what this thread is ultimately for.

Get prepared for emergencies - Prepare

How to get informed and put a plan in place to prepare if an emergency comes to you in your area.

NEW: The execution by firing squad of the Fort Hood shooter will be carried out in public, Hegseth says.

Incredibly dark.

Psychological terror as social control.

Binding the people to the violent acts of the state by way of enforced complicity.

Inciting retribution and violence, desensitising....

I mean, the list goes on. At this point, we have to wonder whether they are using Orwellian writing as a guidebook.

The Pentagon has created plans for an intense 3 day military campaign on Iran targeting energy infrastructure, drone and missile launch points, Trump has not approved these yet-NYT

Rumours circulating suggest pre midterms. Possibly this weekend over the long weekend in the US.

Here's a dramatisation of what happens if the gas network fails, from Sky (it popped up on YT!)

The blurb: "Sky’s economics and data editor Ed Conway goes inside a previously unseen emergency planning exercise to reveal what would happen if Britain ran out of gas – including how decisions over power outages are made and who could be cut off first."

Additional note which I wasn't aware of.

The shooter is of Palestinian origin.

This could not be more inflammatory if you tried.

There are no words for how much damage that man is doing. 😡And he's got a lot to answer for all those kids who've died of measles.

Thanks for this. Just watched it. Scary that we used to be self sufficient and now are relying on imports.

And he's a Muslim. So I think a very bad idea to go ahead with any livestream! (As if that will even happen 🙄)

Thanks for this. Just watched it. Scary that we used to be self sufficient and now are relying on imports.

TBF a lot of countries are not self sufficient in gas. Some of our drop is due to lack of investment in the fields. Other is due to reservoir depletion.

We are currently holding back on 5% additional production from Jackdaw because the government won't authorise the field.

What is unusual about Jackdaw is that it is reserves that could come on line quickly. Usually fields take years or even decades of development time.

Jackdaw could have been producing gas all of summer, adding a considerable amount of extra into EU supply tanks which at the moment are below seasonal norms. Instead they have refused to authorise it.

The story is that Burnham has been holding off on authorising it until after the recent by election in order to beat the Greens, and now the election is over they will authorise it. But we have still missed out on months of production that could have made a real difference to supply constraints in the UK/EU due to idiot politics.

I was recommended this book and since it was years I read it I decided to read it again. It’s really interesting and an easy read. Powerless - the year the lights went out.

Edited

I read it after a recommendation on here. Some interesting snippets but their quality of life was so dependent on their rural village context. Who is going to be brave enough to promote an accurate depiction of what life would be like in a fourth floor flat on a new build estate in a city with a highly transient population ...?

I agree, but it was still worth reading. The first half at least. Station Eleven was very much more fictional but the staying in their flat was interesting, you wouldn’t survive very long staying there.

El Nino raises costs and decreases production for Panama's fishermen

Fishermen along the eastern Pacific say they are feeling the impact of ocean warming from the El Nino phenomenon, which is forcing several species to migrate to deeper waters, leaving nets half empty and communities in crisis.

Yeah... LOL. I will be moderating on a storm chase stream this evening (have been doing that particular job for the past 3 years). Will link the stream when it goes up, think it'll be early evening our time.

Total chaos at Moscow airports!

More than 370 flights have already been delayed, with dozens more canceled.

An air raid alert is in effect across Moscow and the surrounding region amid a drone attack. During such raids, airports routinely activate the “Carpet” emergency protocol, suspending all arrivals and departures.

For ordinary passengers, that means massive delays and major disruption to their travel plans

Also rumours that Putin is personally affected and stuck in the air unable to land his plane in Moscow after returning from a trip to Turkmenistan.

Trump didn't get his peace prize, yet again.

The Nobel peace prize has been awarded to Navi Pillay, the South African former UN human rights chief. In her first reaction, Pillay specifically paid tribute to all people defending human rights everywhere. She joked to her associates that “if you clap a little bit more I may share this prize with Trump”

Just hours after the announcement, which was explicitly meant as the Nobel Committee’s backing for the international court of justice, the US has imposed sanctions on the court
