My favourites are saraclara, MrsTerryPratchett and PyongyangKipperbang. Sensible, empathetic and reasonable all three.

the first thread I really got in to about 15 years ago was chocorasin (sp? ) a young mother whose partner had just abandoned her and was rebuilding her life - I hope she is still doing well

Yes, you can

Yes, you can use different names on different threads but you can’t change name even to an old one in the middle of a thread any more, to prevent malicious sockpuppeting.
