Christa Pike -where does she stand legally?

Just this really. Christ a is obviously being giving life saving treatment at hospital but where does she now stand legally. I suppose she probably has irreversible brain damage so will this not allow a second execution to take place? Is this a cruel and unusual punishment?

I wouldn't have the death penalty, but hard labour with the chain gang and prisoners bot allowed to speak unless spoken to and not allowed to speak to each other except at free association in the evening.

Godsavessobelieve · 01/10/2026 11:57

I doubt they will try another execution. She will probably just get a life sentence. They legally have so many reasons to appeal and future execution orders it’s ridiculous. Chances are she will have severe brain injuries from it too. If she becomes considered to have a severe mental disability then she can not legally be executed anymore. It’s a violation of her 8th amendment. What makes this whole situation even more sickening was Christa Pike asked to be executed be hanging due to the fact that she has a disorder causing her veins to be abnormally small and Tennessee state Supreme Court Denied her request. Then they asked for the lethal injection to be administered through a catheter because they were worried that the injection would fail because of her medical disorder and they denied that request too. The fact that over 35% of lethal injections fail and they continue to allow it is absolutely disgusting. She wasn’t fight the fact she deserved to be executed, she was fighting the fact it was lethal injection. The fact she offered other options for administering the drug due to a disorder with her veins and they denied it and denied her request to be executed by hanging, shows how careless and reckless of a legal system they have in Tennessee and they should have to answer for being negligent and incompetent. The also had another fail lethal injection earlier this year with another prison. Then on top of that they used the same doctor that botched the first one this year. They failed miserably in so many ways and she wasn’t trying to stop them, she didn’t want this to happen and not one of them cared. Every one of them should be removed from the district judges to the judges in there state Supreme Court, along with their governor. There are so many other and more humane was to carry out these sentences, there is no reason for lethal injection to be continually used. But it’s about the financial saving since it’s one of the cheapest ways to carry out the sentence they continue to use it even though there is a trail of proof that it fails. There 106 botched lethal injections since 1985. 1,400 total executions have been carried out since 1985 too, But due to costs and not wanting to traumatize witnesses and staff most have been lethal injections. They have, the electric chair, hanging, firing squad, gas chamber, nitrogen hypoxia available as options and they are nearly 100% effective. There was no reason Christa pike should have gone through what she did, they should all be ashamed of themselves, they failed her, the legal system, everyone involved they failed, including failing Christas victim and the victim’s family, who said in their statement since the botched execution that nothing was done correctly, that it was a mess, how they shouldn’t have even administered the lethal drugs until the drugs to make her fall asleep had kicked in. Instead they allowed her to suffer in agony and she was awake, screaming in pain. Her victims mom said she deserved to be put to death but didn’t deserve what they put her through. I pray the lord watches over those people who had to watch that, that he watches over Christa pike, and either protects her if she survives and gets returned to prison but more likely a state hospital where she will probably suffer till she dies of old age. Or please allow her suffering to end and allow her to pass on to be judged by him. Everyone who failed to allow Christa to die and chose to ignore and deny any other way that was requested by her will be judged by our lord also. She accepted death, she just didn’t want to go through the agony of a botched execution. She knew it would fail and medically proved it, something they chose to ignore. They are just as guilty as she is, except they don’t have to answer for their mistakes and choices. At least Christa admitted she was wrong in her actions, admitted guilt, showed remorse, agreed she deserves to die. She stated and I quote “, I’m not afraid to die. It’s the process that scares me”. After everything that happened surrounding her failed execution and what she had endured, maybe we should put her in our prayers and let the lord decide her future and I pray he welcomes her into his arms and ends her suffering. Then may he judge her, for he will be just and fair. She will receive the sentence she deserves. I promise he will show more empathy, compassion, forgiveness and kindness to her then she was given by in Tennessee tonight.

Christa was already in solitary confinement for most of the 30 years, so not allowed to speak to anyone and in a tiny cell.

I bet her first victim would have swapped the actual torture she went through at Pike's hands for "a burning sensation in her legs". She didn't just "kill" a young women, she murdered her in a particularly cruel and protracted assault.

As I've said above, I don't agree with the death penalty but the efforts to minimise and excuse Pike's crimes are sickening.

Show me please where I "minimized her crimes". The murder was horrific and cruel, but my argument is the state can not act in a same way insane murderers do. We are not living in medieval times and we are not fucking barbarians. But it makes me think a lot of people on here would enjoy watching criminals being publicly beheaded or hanged or whatever. Nothing much changes I guess.

But for any civilized person this very public display of cruelty is fucking sickening.

dustabsorber · 01/10/2026 12:05

Today in the 700 prisoners are being released early. Is anyone considering their victims? Most of them will be going straight back into crime.

Coldcoffeekindamorning · 01/10/2026 12:13

I don't know if this is the right time to suggest a book recommendation...Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood."

An interesting read that questions if the DP really does give any justice or closure to the victims family when it comes down to the final act of killing the murderer - the deed has been done but the crime was still committed, the memory and impact of that cannot be erased and the grief will not be quenched.

It also questions if the people demanding it are just as bad as the people who committed the violent crime in that they want a violent crime to happen themselves.

We all feel differently about this but we are talking about someone who admitted to the murder and carried a piece of the victims skull around with her - I would think my feelings towards a family member who is capable of doing this would change.

You would probably feel a mix of emotions including devastation and grief.

However, justice should never be about how anyone feels, including the victim's family because then what about people who don't have any family? Do crimes against them matter less?

Personally, I think, the justice system should be less about justice and just be about keeping society safe. We don't need the death penalty to keep society safe.

Persephonia1966 · 01/10/2026 12:17

heartsinvisiblefury · 01/10/2026 08:03

My sympathy is with the family of her victim.

I have huge sympathy for them as well. But the fucked up nature of the execution can't have helped them either.
The mother was fully in favour of the death penalty. I imagine I would be in that situation and I can also imagine you would be desperate for some sort of closure/keen to do the right thing by your own child in the only way left.

Instead of closure they had thirty years of waiting for closure then a botched execution which would have been absolutely horrific to watch I imagine (with all the mixed feelings accompanying it) and now the killer isn't even dead after all that.

Even though I think I would want the death penalty if I was in the parents/families shoes I don't think the death penalty is kind to or does right by the victims families either.

This woman is evil. This is the woman that tortured and murdered a girl and then carried a piece of her skull around with her. That’s what I call cruel and unusual.

I suggest you read the book “Why women kill”. There is lots of research about women (and men) who have been abused being much more likely to kill or commit crimes. Christa was raped from the age of two by three different men regularly. She was also beaten frequently by many different people. Nobody can develop normally with that trauma and damage.

dustabsorber · 01/10/2026 12:48

Not so lethal injection.

Just read an article. It implied there is no protocol for a situation like this, ie if the patient survives. That’s pretty shocking as well.

Edited

I know.

protocol is if the first injection fails, do a second.

end of protocol.

should have been do a third. Do a fourth. Inject a different drug.

it’s really not difficult to inject something to stop somebodies heart.

Two doses and then “life saving treatment” is so utterly absurd.

With the electric chair, they just keep zapping away until the do tor says the condemned is dead.

Singapore canes violent offenders and has a very low crime rate.

There will be a whole host of reasons for the differences in rates of offending between the two countries. I suspect the method of killing in capital offences has a minimally significant influence, it's more likely to be to do with cultural, economic & social factors, alongside strict laws.

dustabsorber · 01/10/2026 12:59

One state audio recorded all executions in the 1980s. Somehow they tapes have ended up YouTube. They are very matter of fact. The executioner pulls the switch, 30 seconds later two doctors check for signs of life. A faint heart beat is detected. The executioner pulls the switch a second time, repeat until no signs of life. Leave corpse to cool down.

Are they going to wheel in a women in a brain dead state back into an execution chamber in a year and get the family back to witness them finish the job? I think bot.

Pp probably right that she may die in hospital but it has put the medical team involved in providing life saving care in a horrible position.

It doesn’t put the medical team in a horrible position. They will treat her as they would any other patient.

Exactly. Sounds a much better option.

The fact they have got this wrong is just ridiculous.

That's very much my position. If killing people is wrong, it's wrong for the state to do it (other than in times of war where it is an act of defence, obvs).

However, I'm in favour of assisted dying for the terminally ill that want it. Some people find that baffling.

Yes, mine too. And I don't get why some people seem to think that just because we don't want the state to murder a murderer means that we think the utterly abhorrent crime she committed is excusable.

smooththecat · 01/10/2026 13:14

So much of a hidden underclass of ghoulish people visible here. Absolutely disgusting. It’s reminiscent of the braying mobs who would attend executions in the Middle Ages. I am detecting that some people enjoy this. I’m glad we live with the rule of law set by people who are right thinking and have a moral compass.

If you know the first thing about any of this, you’ll know that, for years now, drug companies have been unwilling to provide execution drugs to facilitate these practices, quite rightly. The penal system has been using degraded and expired drugs that don’t work and experimenting on people with different combinations of drugs they are able to get hold of and that also don’t work appropriately. There have been quite a number of botched executions. If they insist on state killing they ought to use a firing squad. It’s more of an honest representation of what they are doing. The experiments and devices are ghoulish.

France had public executions until 1939. Several hundred thousand turned up to watch the last one. The crowd was so unruly that the authorities carried all future executions inside prison. Has human nature changed that much since 1939? People would show en masse if they were restarted today, IMO.

You've clearly never been through this with a loved one.

If your loved one was starved to death by medical professionals then you need to report it.
