I disagree.
You were blaming British Colonialist activities for the present state of play, which is ridiculous.
Maybe you should accept that many of these countries are authors of their own misfortune.
Uganda gained independence in 1962 but Idi Amin came to power in 1971, so would you blame his despotic regime on Britain's involvement in that country?
I think not.

No I wasn’t - I said we can’t isolate one asylum seeker and blame them all. If we’re to do that then why not consider Zitouni who saved people, or go back to colonial rule for reasons folk flee places - we can’t debate on such narrow parameters of any of these being the issue.

Well if that's your level of intellect...........

Something like Tommo’s himself eh? Lol

I’ve never said our system is perfect - I’ve said many times, though maybe not on this thread, that we could do better.

There’s a myriad of reasons for the ‘chaos’ - Tories allowing backlog to build, Brexit reducing intelligence sharing across EU, the wars we get ourselves involved in and so on.

Personally, I’m all for immigration and our country was built on the back of it - however, I recognise it’s a contentious issue and many don’t share my views. Whomever is voted in here will have laid out plans in their manifesto and should aim to implement them.

Whilst I don’t like Labour’s immigration stuff to date they are reducing both net migration, acceptance of asylum claims and small boat crossings - I thought people who want immigration and small boats reduced would be pleased with this - it can’t happen overnight but their is definitely a change from chaos to more managed to be seen.

The chaos is within the system, not ‘tories’ or Brexit. Look at other countries in the EU.

It starts when people pay traffickers, some will experience sexual violence or general violence as part of that, it’s on French beaches with tear gas and people being crushed. Usually women and dc.

It continues as men aren’t vetted and there’s a horrific outcome eg Belfast or Rhiannon Whyte’s death.

It’s not working well and it is possible to change. Other countries just have changed it successfully.

If we ever do vote to change the system even the left won’t want to go back to it.

Yes, but they can also receive benefits, so that pretty cancels out their contributions. If there were any contributions to start with.

If they’re working they’re contributing. And just as every indigenous working person isn’t receiving benefits, the same applies to immigrants.

I know someone who has been in the UK for 25 years and during all that time he ran a successful customer facing business. But when he got cancer and had to deal with medical language he lost all confidence and needed his daughter who was educated in the UK to go along and translate for him.
I know someone whose dad had lived in Spain for over 20 years and could live his life in Spanish, worked for a Spanish business in Madrid. Then he got ill and came home because he found it difficult to understand his treatment options.
My FIL was British and he had trouble understanding medical terminology when he got cancer.

I’m sure there are plenty of people who’d struggle with medical terminology, even in their own language.
That’s understandable.
It’s different though when people require paid translators and interpreters to be provided for them.

You'd rather they died/became more seriously ill because they didn't understand?

Yes change it all completely, no one would vote for this. Look at Australia who had the same, no one wants it back, not even the left.

Been there and seen that overseas in a non-English speaking country..

Serious illness (now fixed)....

No possibility at all of a translator being supplied gratis (either by the state or a charity)...IMO that was fair enough.

The couple of long'ish hospital stays sure as heck improved my technical vocab in my second language...

I'm sure the poster didn't infer that.
When my parents were on holiday, with another couple, in Italy my mother was taken ill and had to go to A & E.
Italy’s national health service (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale) does not guarantee a dedicated, free-of-charge human interpreter at the bedside or in emergency rooms for non-Italian speakers.
Fortunately one of their friends was fluent in Italian so she was treated straight away. Otherwise she would have had to wait until someone found a translator for her and then paid.

That’s the point.

Just because they are working does not mean they are not costing us lots of money.

And if no one been there/contactable/able to pay would you have happy if she'd remained untreated?

Of course, and that why we have to trim the welfare bill and get them to work.

In addition to that, they were born here, they didn’t cross two continents at the cost of thousands to come over.

Then again, if we have many Brits on benefits why do we need more people?

No, I don't want anyone to die or get sicker, what a ridiculous leap to make.
But the discussion was about state-funded translators, and none of the people in your examples seems to have used those.
They relied on family or moved home. In previous posts, people were talking specifically about the financial cost of paid interpreters to the NHS, not just about the patients’ general language and comprehension skills.

The more Danny Thomas is ridiculed the better IMHO. I'd give more respect to a bit of poo on my shoe. "Fanny" is a very mild insult for someone who is a vile, violent criminal. Why the upset on his behalf?

I think he is in court today.

Yes, I’ve also been there myself, as an interpreter for an elderly relative.

Well none of them were penniless refugees so they had other resources.

Didn't realise the people smugglers had developed self-driving boats 😮

No need to be facetious 🙄

YourAmplePlumPoster · 29/09/2026 09:30

Cost of interpreters. Total annual cost £125 million. NHS 60 million. HM courts and tribunals £28.4 million. Local authorities and police 40 million. Dept for work and pensions £4 million.

bafta16 · 29/09/2026 09:30

Tommo....what a guy. Why can't these people use their normal names. Thomas, too middle class I suppose.

inamarina · 29/09/2026 09:32

So why list those people if their situation is incomparable to refugees?
The cost of the translation services to the NHS is a big factor and can’t be completely ignored, especially since we’re being told that asylum seekers come here specifically because they speak the language or have relatives here.
