“His hobby” “Person A and person B” Or even worse “Person A-let’s call them Sid”

OP posts:

And do you ask everyone you know how often they wash their towels? 😐

😵‍💫

"This is a long one -sorry!". It never needs to be even close to that length, I immediately click away now

Never read those posts…just get to the point.

Wechsel · 26/09/2026 19:36

There used to be a MN trend of patronising people by making a statement and making it into a rhetorical question by adding "no?" at the end.

You could do workouts while your newborn naps, no?

I'm glad that's stopped, it was extremely irritating, not least because the statement was generally not a self evident truth but a bloody stupid suggestion or completely incorrect assumption.

NoisyMonster678 · 26/09/2026 19:42

No paragraphs.

Wechsel · 26/09/2026 19:45

Recently there are a lot of poor little rich girl threads where people on over 100k claim they're worse off than their cleaner because they don't get subsidised nursery fees unless they put extra money into their pension, but don't appreciate being asked how the cleaner's cleaner is doing financially, and how much their employer's contribution to their cleaner's pension sets them back...

‘My sibling’ as if it’s going to be very outing to know if it’s a brother or sister they have

genuineflexor · 26/09/2026 20:20

My favourites are when posters make up an elaborate and dramatic rouse to catch out a cheating partner that involves travelling many miles, booking hotel rooms, posing as secretaries, calling hotels with made up stories about lost luggage, calling around every restaurant in a city to see where a booking might have been made etc and telling them you have forgotten where you booked in case they ask.
Or telling the OP to say something and ‘watch his reaction’… 🙄

MajorSideEye · 26/09/2026 17:19

Oh no murasaki I have to disagree. :) There was poster a few years ago who said she had an outing hobby.

She eventually spilled and it was indeed very outing!! It was something like, 18th Century French Baroque String Music Club!!

Edited

Exception that proves the rule then!

I ask ChatGPT for you..

Yes! Why the fuck are they on a discussion board if they can no longer use their brain and have to outsource thinking to a program?

Even where it's a genuinely rare hobby, avoiding saying what it is focuses most readers' attention on wondering what it is. Swapping it out for something else would solve the problems.

If she'd just said something like choir, nobody would have been any the wiser.

If the central issue hinged on not having an alternative setting to do that hobby because it's really niche, then substitute some vaguely related niche hobby "a Renaissance music choir" or something - close enough to get relevant answers considering you don't have a choice of multiple local groups, different enough not to alert fellow 18th century French baroque string music group members and their friends!

Yeah would normally agree but she came across as such a lovely gentle poster, as one would imagine an 18th century lover of playing wind instruments would be, who had this absolutely horrid man in their group.

Not sure why I remember it so well, I think it was because all the other posters were amused when she revealed her hobby and were like “yeah ok that is pretty unique”.

Can’t remember how it ended. Hope it was good as the other hobby thread where some rotters were ganging up on a mother and daughter to give an awful women a lift there and back.

Kudos for the use of the marvellous word 'rotters' .

murasaki · 26/09/2026 22:35

As it happens I used to play in a Baroque music group as a teenager but it was mostly Bach, Telemann and Handel, so German rather than French. We were a bit niche though!

scalt · 26/09/2026 22:38

The ones telling you to do something.

AIBU to remind you to drive less?
To use less water?
To wear a face mask?
To not let your cat outside?
To think about climate change?

olivepicanto · 26/09/2026 22:40

any post in the wrong topic

opaldark · 26/09/2026 22:42

@scalt yes! It makes me (and pretty much everyone else on MN) descend into petulant teenagers even if I quite agree with them.

SingingShrews · 26/09/2026 22:43

What people say 'am I the only one who' then it's something really mundane. Yeah, you are the only one in the entire world who doesn't like peas, you are that special 🙄

mumumental · 26/09/2026 22:47

@Changeisstillpossiblei hate “discuss@. In my head I am saying to them “No. Who the fuck do you think you are?” It’s not even polite, and it’s incredibly patronising.

TurquoiseGoldPeaches · 26/09/2026 22:47

The longest OP

You have to actively go looking for threads about trans people, they're not liberally sprinkled all over MN - unless someone randomly inserts the subject into a thread about something else entirely of course...

There's a whole board under feminism and almost always some active threads. It's omnipresent

BriarTime · 26/09/2026 17:34

The DH/DS/DD/DC thing really annoys me, too, even if it is a well-established system of shorthand round these parts. Not sure why. I just find it grating.

Even worse is Ddog.

SmallTreeDeepRoots · 26/09/2026 23:24

Thoughts?

Somewhereovertherainbowwewillmeetagain · 26/09/2026 23:30

Random long posts with a massive story at the start that has no relevance to the point. The poster will start with family life as a child up to including marriage and children, then add in numerous other points. To quickly add in at the end that they don't like there work or something Confused like why? Just why?

sueelleker · 27/09/2026 00:09

Gemilo · 26/09/2026 23:07

Even worse is Ddog.

I saw DSIL the other day, and couldn't work out whether it was son-in-law or sister-in-law.

Quoting the entire OP. Happens dozens of times in any longish thread.

We know you’re replying to the OP. Everyone is replying to the OP. You only need to quote if you’re replying to a comment that’s NOT the fucking OP.

God, drives me demented.

I think it’s fine to quote the OP to bring the thread back on track. Sometimes it gets derailed and I deliberately quote the OP to avoid getting caught up in a bunfight.
