“His hobby” “Person A and person B” Or even worse “Person A-let’s call them Sid”

OP posts:

Or even worse than discuss - Go!

Rambling OP with no paragraphs.

Clickbait titles…

I think it might be a sort of demand avoidance I’m developing in my old age, but that ‘discuss’ or ‘go’ thing really annoys me. You’re starting a MN thread, you’re not my teacher or my mum, so keep your imperatives to yourself. 😂

Hubby
When people say ‘ I have never seen / heard / something’, does t mean it doesn’t happen.
’ I’ve never met anyone who does x - eg wash their towels every week. ‘ do you know everyone’s towel washing routine ?

opaldark · 26/09/2026 17:34

Another pet peeve of mine is “DH is useless, we’ve not been happy in years, we have 4 DC aged 8, 6, 3 and 6 months”. God forbid you question why someone had so many children (and recently) within an unhappy marriage.

BriarTime · 26/09/2026 17:34

The DH/DS/DD/DC thing really annoys me, too, even if it is a well-established system of shorthand round these parts. Not sure why. I just find it grating.

GreenWheat · 26/09/2026 17:36

"This is a long one -sorry!". It never needs to be even close to that length, I immediately click away now

EnjoythemoneyJane · 26/09/2026 17:38

Quoting the entire OP. Happens dozens of times in any longish thread.

We know you’re replying to the OP. Everyone is replying to the OP. You only need to quote if you’re replying to a comment that’s NOT the fucking OP.

God, drives me demented.

When the OP makes a random statement and follows it up by adding "Discuss".

I always want to reply to those in the style of Emily Blunt in The Devil Wears Prada

I also remember when people used to type F when they didn’t know how to watch a thread. Thankfully that seems to have disappeared now!

EmpressaurusKitty · 26/09/2026 17:46

Oh and people who reply to the OP when the thread is 100s of posts long already.

Outing hobbies are hilarious. They're always something entirely mundane that thousands of people do. If it was archery while dressed as a member of Red Dwarf, I could understand it, but it never is.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

ExpertlyDecluttering · 26/09/2026 17:55

To be fair re outing hobbies, I used to do a fairly common hobby the sort where I would just say "salsa dancing". And in one post someone else outed themself to me by saying (on a thread about adult dance classes) that she went to salsa on a Thursday in a class that was split into two groups with beginners and advanced and mentioned what her job was in the same thread and I thought aha, that's so and so. And it was I've seen her one many threads about our local area, schools etc since.

Those are people who are accidentally on MN when they thought they'd opened Reddit I think...

Yes... and even more irritating when they've stated that it's their husband, daughter, mum or whoever and still feel the need to follow it up by telling us whether these people described with very clear sex-based words are M or F.

Newjobadvice · 26/09/2026 17:57

Any usually lighthearted rant thread about things your partner/ sister/ mother does that annoys you.

Three posts in a poster will come out with "Well, my DH/DM/Dsis died 3 years ago and I wish they were here for me to moan about them annoying me."

Sorry for your loss but it's obvious from the title it's a rant thread, just scroll on by instead of guilt tripping.

ExpertlyDecluttering · 26/09/2026 18:00

Another one, half a title.

"I was walking into town and I found...."

AvengingAngle · 26/09/2026 18:03

A wall of text without paragraphs is off-putting and sometimes I'm too tired to read it.

Otherwise, nothing really other than the subject being something about which I know nothing, or have no opinion on.

I don't mind 'outing hobbies', person A & B, 'let's call him Sid', people breaking the news of a celebrity death, misspelling "etc." or other errors, 'so', 'discuss' or 'go'.

I am not fussy, people have different posting styles and different levels of literacy - if I have knowledge or an opinion to bring to the thread, then I'll bring it.

I used to avoid clickbait / made up shit, but now I find those threads the most entertaining!

Loving the one atm about the 50 year-old who recently became a prostitute and whose clients are good-looking 30 year-old professionals who pay £140 for a shag in the middle of the day (OP doesn’t work evenings). Oh and she’s gained 2 sugar daddies in her first month who love to buy her gifts.

I was honestly hooked throughout!

It did especially puzzle me why somebody aged 50 (and I'm that age myself) would be remotely appealing to a 'sugar daddy'.

Isn't the whole idea that they want the adoration and attention of somebody very young, beautiful, needing money and naive about the world; rather than an independent, confident middle-aged woman who has been round the block and won't idolise them just for being rich?

Even the pervs gentlemen in their 70s or older are likely to be wanting somebody in her 20s or early 30s at an absolute push. They're paying a lot of money for a daughter/granddaughter figure; they don't want somebody who could plausibly be their actual wife.

Oh no murasaki I have to disagree. :) There was poster a few years ago who said she had an outing hobby.

She eventually spilled and it was indeed very outing!! It was something like, 18th Century French Baroque String Music Club!!

Edited

Even where it's a genuinely rare hobby, avoiding saying what it is focuses most readers' attention on wondering what it is. Swapping it out for something else would solve the problems.

If she'd just said something like choir, nobody would have been any the wiser.

If the central issue hinged on not having an alternative setting to do that hobby because it's really niche, then substitute some vaguely related niche hobby "a Renaissance music choir" or something - close enough to get relevant answers considering you don't have a choice of multiple local groups, different enough not to alert fellow 18th century French baroque string music group members and their friends!

Perhaps she (or he) was misusing the term sugar daddy in her (or his) creative writing and just meant regular customer.

I'm not sure whether there is a word for a man who takes out some kind of monthly contract with a prostitute near his own age... I suppose the man might possibly refer to her as his "mistress", although I'm not sure that's a by the hour thing, I always thought it was more a woman set up in her own flat paid for by her - what, "patron" maybe - and given an allowance in return for being something close to a high ranking sex slave...

What that thread describes is a bit more like a limited use sleezy gym membership I guess 🤢

Pah. I only live in a tiny village, and we have at least 9 completely unconnected 18th Century French baroque string music clubs!

Ditto those nauseating ' I'm having a chippy tea, what's your order? '
Literally why?
Yep also hobbies, and 'as the title says' as if we can't comprehend it.
Love a bit of hate reading tho😅

Oh, no - I like reading what other people order from takeaways, always interesting to think 'why on earth would they order that?' or 'that sounds nice, must bear it in mind'.

dreamingofgoodhair · 26/09/2026 18:59

Quoting the opening post , no need.

I immediately stop reading any reply that starts ‘Erm…’
