Is changing a dirty nappy in a café still considered unacceptable?

I was having lunch killing time in an M&S cafe when a new mum with a 6mth old (baby was weaning on a fruit pouch) went to change her baby’s dirty nappy in the pram. I’m not blaming the baby for one minute as babies poo at the most inconvenient times! I understand that she was baffled on her own, messy baby nneeded outfit changing and had to redress the baby and then pack all her stuff away. The poor woman most likely sleep deprived and could have had PND so lots of reasons why she was stressed out as being out with a baby is stressful enough.

Is it the norm to change dirty nappies in front of others these days ? Or is this still lack of etiquette ? Personally I think it was unacceptable especially as the toilets are pretty much attached to this M&S cafe abd saw it was rather inconsiderate.

It’s grim and unacceptable. But, having watched a couple change the nappy of their small baby ON their table in a “naice” restaurant, nothing would surprise me.

@NovemberMorn i bit my lip but didn’t want to saying anything , hoping the staff would but no!

They should have, it annoys me when people who are on the payroll look the other way.
In your position I doubt I would have said anything either....but the sheer unhygieneness of it all would have put me off my lunch.

Me neither....some people do not have the manners of pigs.

I remember once being in a nice restaurant; after having an evening meal, one of the woman in a group of 7 or 8 adults handed out dental floss, and the whole table sat there flossing their teeth, then left the horrible dirty used floss all over the table for the waiter to move.

But you wouldn’t expect the dog to poo next to people eating and for someone to clear it up without washing their hands, so no comparison.
New mother or not you’d wheel baby in the pram either to the loos or outside. No excuses at all.

Dog poo contains dangerous bacteria that can make you blind so not a fair comparison. I wouldn’t frequent a cafe with a dog at all, I don’t think it’s hygienic. Yes in an ideal world there would be lots of changing places available but I know in my neck of the woods, the cafe has one in the disabled toilets. If that’s busy then there isn’t anywhere else unless you want to take a lift to the top floor (maybe wait 5 or 6 turns as its always busy) and walk a long way with a an upset baby. Or buy a drink somewhere else to be able to use the loo. There’s worse things than baby poop.

GhostEed · 24/09/2026 19:24

It’s disgusting and foul. The mother had fuck all consideration for anyone else, it’s irrelevant if she was sleep deprived.

Oh lord, that is vile!!!! 🤮 The poor waiter!

i don’t see it as an issue if no other choice. Life happens. If it’s okay to take for a dog i the cafe which is far more unhygienic imho why not change a baby.

It is disgusting and i would have been very insistent that the staff make her stop.

Just realised people probably do pick up their dogs poo, not wash their hands and then visit cafes and touch door handles etc. Ew

I have never changed my baby in a cafe or a restaurant but I have been told by several people I could near where people are eating, by family members and staff. I change her in her pram with a mat under her in the toilets if there is no baby change, or in the car.

caringcarer · 24/09/2026 19:33

She should have taken baby to toilets. They have changing table in M&S. I'd probably have reported it.

Nobody picks up dog poo with their hands!

Baby poo contains harmful bacteria just as adult poo does.
Infections can spread from the surfaces and the hands that have handled it, causing all manner of illness.
There may be worse things....that doesn't make it right.

People poop and don’t wash hands! Don’t think about it too much it you would never eat out again!

I see your point but I think both shouldn’t be allowed. A friend of mine was saying a dog pooed in a cafe and stinked out the place until the owner picked it up. In both cases the smell and sight of it is just unpleasant and puts people off even after it’s been cleaned up. And it just increases the risk of contamination given how lax some people are after with handwashing after handling any kind of poop be it dogs or human.

i mean people can use a toilet/changing facility and still not wash their hands, but I think it increases the chance that they won’t wash their hands if they’ve not even bothered to go in one to change their babies nappy.

That's true, I feel better now, thanks lol

I don't often touch the poop directly when changing my baby but I'm a dedicated hand washer

Backedoffhackedoff · 24/09/2026 19:41

Yes op, it’s totally acceptable. It’s changed so club recently sometimes small children even curl one out on a cafe- I’m surprised you’ve not even it multiple times.

It’s all changed so much whilst you weren’t paying attention

Alternatively, if people thought about it more, they may be more considerate to others who may have a low immune system or are recovering from serious illness and could have a serious setback due to other people's filthy habits.

TwoWimminGoingWildish · 24/09/2026 19:47

I changed a nappy in a crowded airport once . . . I was travelling on my own with a toddler and baby; we were incredibly lucky to find seats in a corner (hundreds of people standing or sitting on the floor). I knew that if I took DD to the toilets, we’d lose our seats immediately, and our flight was delayed so it was already a bit of a nightmare. I changed her on the floor in between my body and the wall. It was awful and I didn’t want to, but I was stressed and tired.

Savvysix1984 · 24/09/2026 19:49

That’s gross

Yeah it’s perfectly understandable in that scenario. Less so in an M&S cafe!

freerangethighs · 24/09/2026 19:57

Not acceptable, but at least she changed the baby in the pram rather than on one of the tables, as I saw a couple do in San Francisco.

pinkksugarmouse · 24/09/2026 19:59

Not in a cafe. Thats disgusting and obviously she didn't wash her hands. I feel bad for the other customers.

CuteHANDBAG · 24/09/2026 20:04

That’s disgusting and lazy.

TheYorkshirePudding · 24/09/2026 20:05

What was the baby change like? Let’s be honest, they aren’t ever fit for purpose (apart from Gloucester Services): silly fold down tables in tiny cubicles, nowhere to put your stuff, where do you put your baby whilst you pack away and wash your hands? Where do you leave your pram - in the cafe? I think change where you feel best. Including in your car boot or on the lawn. Poor new mums have enough on their plate.

smythsbible · 24/09/2026 20:13

I changed my baby on the grass if we’re at the park or whatever suited us. I can’t stand all these germ freaks and have disowned my brother for marrying one and so has our mum.
I have always picked up stuff dropped in the floor and given back to my toddler, we don’t wash our hands 24/7 and guess what ? none of us ever been ill.
SIL who makes her kids wash their hands after touching a railing or door handle complains her kids are always off school with some illness.
Wr just decided don’t need them in our life.

pilates · 24/09/2026 20:17

Yeah that’s not on especially as M&S have good changing facilities in the toilet.
